Vick: Best QB since Donovan

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES
PHILADELPHIA-- Let me get this straight, Andy Reid makes his best decision, since he drafted Donovan McNabb with the No. 2 pick in the 1999 draft, and he's being criticized for it.
Hey, I've criticized the Eagles head coach as much, maybe more, than most over the past dozen years that our paths and ideas have crossed. This time I say, way to go, Andy.

It's not so much as to why Reid changed his mind and named Michael Vick his starting quarterback for Sunday's game in Jacksonville and beyond, it's why he didn't do it right after the win over Detroit. But as someone said once, or 1,000 times, better late than never.
Making Vick the starter was the easiest decision Reid has had to make since he said yes when Jeffrey Lurie offered him the Eagles head coaching job in 1999. You can't take a player, playing as well as Vick is, out of the lineup. You just can't. It would be insane.
And please don't give me that junk about Kevin Kolb losing his job because of injury, or Wally Pipp would have been the Yankees first baseman all those years, instead of that Gehrig kid.
Making Vick the quarterback was easy, now the hard part starts for Reid and the Eagles organization.
Vick is going to continue to play well for the Eagles, because, well, he's a very good player who as he turned 30 and watched the game for his two-year absence has learned how to play the game, too. He can still run better than any quarterback since Randall Cunningham, he just does it more discretely. His rocket of a left arm is still just as strong, it's also become more accurate.
Signing with the Eagles and learning Reid's way and the Eagles' offense, wasn't the worst choice he ever made, either.
So as Vick continues to play well and the Eagles win more games than you thought they would, I have revised my third-place in the NFC East prediction to a very possible division title, especially with the way the Giants and Cowboys look through the first two weeks.
Yes, I like Vick that much and think he makes that much of a difference in a division that is pretty balanced anyway.
