  • Andrews & the back again

You knew this was going to happen at some point. It's a shame. (From PFT)

A day after practicing with the Giants on a limited basis despite a back injury, guard Shawn Andrews showed up for work and was unable to go, according to Mike Garafolo of the Newark Star-Ledger.
But there’s more to the story. According to a league source, Andrews was in so much pain that he eventually was sent to a local hospital.
It’s unknown how long he stayed or whether he was admitted as a patient.
Andrews has struggled with back problems for years. He fought through his most recent episode, which developed during the November 14 game against the Cowboys, to play in the November 21 loss to his former team, the Eagles.
The injury-riddled Giants host the 6-4 Jaguars on Sunday.

should we act surprised or what ?
We're looking for people that are fundamentally different,” vice president of player personnel Andy Weidl said Saturday night. “The love and passion for football, it's non-negotiable. They're caring, their character, they do the right thing persistently, and they have a relentless playing style that you can see on tape. The motor, it burns hot. You see them finishing plays. They have a team-first mentality. They're selfless individuals.

I always thought that he got way to much shit for having a bad back. At least this will silence those who doubted him. I hope that he didn't screw it up for good.

I don't think it silences anything. As someone who has had a back injury for 25 years,I could easily be sitting at home collecting disability, but still go off to work everyday doing all that is required as a construction worker.Sometimes you gotta man up and with Shawn it's always something and in my mind his biggest problem is a lack of stones.

Really?? A lack of stones?? I think the guy is a bit of a nutcase, but I can't accuse someone trying to play offensive line with a chronic back condition of having a lack of intestinal fortitude. The guy had to have an epidural to play against the Eagles last week, for cryin out loud.

The guy is just cooked. He and everyone else should have realized this quite a while ago. Maybe now he will retire. But, I'm laughing my ass off at your telling him to man up.

The guy has possibly the 2 hardest injuries to disprove as faking. Hard to diagnose a back and hard to diagnose the depression. He made his millions, got mom a house and has all the cheeseburger money he needs. He sure looked limber and loose during the game.IMO anyone paying him the cash should go the extra mile and post a PI at his house.

Agreed, because Dr.'s routinely perform back surgery on and give epidural injections to people who are faking their back pain, without any medical evidence to indicate an actual problem.

The Eagles should have cut ties to him earlier than they did, and the Giants were ill advised to sign him and rely on him in any capacity, but I honestly don't think he's faking the back injury.

I don't think he was/is faking either. My only problem with Andrews...and it's a big one...is the way he bad mouthed the Birds after all the patience and money they sent his way. And then to compound things, he slobbered all over the Giants for immediately making him feel like 'part of the family'

I've gone from having been a steadfast defender of Andrews to someone who wouldn't care if...I'll just leave it there.

I am certain the guy isn't faking a back injury. For a man of that size, it is pretty common.

Bit I'm also sure he is kind of batshit crazy.

Put that, money, and a bad back together with all that fame and you've got a pretty good chance for this to end badly.
You know Darren if you'd have told me 10 years ago that someday I was going to solve the world's energy problems I'd have said your crazy.... now lets drop this big ball of oil out the window.

Yeah. Are you out of your friekin mind? The poor bastard goes through 2 back surgeries looking for attention? And does all his physical therapy to return to football to prove to guys like you that he isn't a pussy. I just hope the guy is OK.

I don't doubt he has a bad back and I don't doubt he is half ass crazy. But he took my favorite football team for a ride playing that depression(whether he had it or not I don't care because he played it up for a long time) and that alone pisses me off. Add to the fact that he wound up with the bad back and that pissed me off. Then he went to the giants and taled **** and that pissed me off. So sorry for him but F*** Andrews (and his brother).
Wait until next year is a terrible philosophy
                      Hope is not a strategy
                      RIP

Justifiable anger for sure. We really don't need either one of them, so it's easy for me to just let them both go. And don't kid yourself, the Eagles have fucked quite a few people themselves over the years. Just sayin.

I totally agree with this. The Eagles were more than patient with him, and held on to him too long, giving him every opportunity to get healthy. It was beyond bad for him to bad mouth the Eagles after all that. He should have been thanking Andy Reid for sticking with him for so long. It just indicates that in addition to being a certifiable nutcase, he has no class.

EagleBreath you hit the nail on the head. My beef with Andrews is not the injury or the depression. I have people in my family that have suffered from depression.... we all do or at least know of somebody that has. It is a real thing that I hope to hell I never have to deal with. The back injury also... I got a buddy that I used to play golf with that has a bad back and there are summers where he has to get 2 or 3 injections just to move around. Needless to say he can't play golf anymore. Has a hard enough time playing with his kids.

So those two things are real.

What I don't like is Andrews throwing AR and the entire organization under the bus like he did. He is a spoiled athlete and acted like one so as far as his football career goes... screw him. As far as his time here on earth goes... I wish him the best because no one should have to spend 45-50 years with a bad back which is what he is staring at.
You know Darren if you'd have told me 10 years ago that someday I was going to solve the world's energy problems I'd have said your crazy.... now lets drop this big ball of oil out the window.

                              2/26/11, Per RotoWorld...

Giants GM Jerry Reese doesn't foresee LT Shawn Andrews' chronic back problems going away anytime soon.

"The rest of his career, I think that is just a problem he’s going to have to manage," said Reese. Andrews is physically unreliable, which is why the G-Men can't afford to pay his $3.5 million offseason roster bonus. Look for Andrews to be released, and potentially re-signed for less money at a later date.
