  • Thoughts on Juan Castillo

It's taken a week to digest everything but I have a couple of comments.

In the last 5 years the Eagles have lost a good amount of talent from their coaching staff. I think loosing John Harbaugh and Steve Spagnuolo hurt the most. It is my belief that Catillo was offered the job of OC with Cleveland and Reid did not want to loose him and he already had an OC.

I was confused about this and then realized that Reid is planning for the future (he always does) and that Castillo will be the next head coach for the Eagles when Andy decides to take a break from coaching and moves to the front office. This is somewhat like what Mike Holmgren did at Seattle. The only way to keep Castillo was with a coordinator job.

That said, Andy Reid is not a stupid man (contrary to comments on this and other boards). It's not uncommon to have a defensive coordinator and a assistant head coach - Defense. A couple of years ago Mike Singletary held that title at SF and Gregggggg Williams with the Redskins as examples. In both cases those teams had both a assistant head coach - defense and a defensive coordinator. If Reid feels that there's a need for additional input for defense then we still might see another hire. He may also feel that Castillo is more than capable of putting together a top defense without additional help.

Andy Reid was hired as head coach based on his interview even though he was only a quarterback coach at Green Bay. As baffling as that hire was, it was a good decision. Castillo was hired as defensive coordinator based on his interview even though he was only a OL coach. Time will tell if that was a good decision or not. Working for Don Capers or Dick LeBeau does not mean you will be a good DC (just like working for Jim Johnson) and working as an OL coach doesn't mean you won't be a good DC. We just don't know, and I'm willing to trust Reid on this one. He seems to have a sense of urgency that I've never seen before, so I'm willing to see what happens.

While the proof is still in the playing and we must still wait and see, I am growing a bit more comfortable with this move. I will become more optimistic depending on how they fill out the remaining staff vacancies on defense. I believe that Washburn will be given autonomy to implement his brand of DL play into the scheme, so perhaps we will see some sort of 46/Jim Johnson-hybrid.

What's done is done, let's go Juan. Andy has definitely earned the benefit of the doubt, IMO.

I agree that Cleveland was in play and that the promotion was designed to keep Juan from jumping ship. My personal feeling was that the Birds should have let Juan go and tried to lure Howard Mudd out of retirement b/c his buddy Washburn is here (and I said as much when the Cleveland situation was live). Anyone who saw the video of Washburn and Mudd's African trip could see that the friendship was deep. Well, Andy got Mudd but chose not to lose Juan. Since Juan is one of the very few holdovers from Rhodes' staff, Reid must really respect the guy. He knows way more than we ever will, so we must defer. I am not sure Castillo is the coach in waiting, but that really doesn't matter. The key is that Reid clearly didn't want to lose Juan at this time and did what he had to do. Good luck to the Eagles, one and all. Cold comfort, but we came by far the closest to beating the SuperBowl champ in the playoffs, so here's hoping for the best next year.

Juan Castillo is a wonderful guy, a great offensive line coach and a loyal servant of the Philadelphia Eagles. I can't imagine anyone not wanting this guy to succeed. Still, I have my doubts.
Don't kid yourself Jimmy. If a cow ever got the chance, he'd kill you and everyone you cared about!

                The Importance of Iowa?

Posted: July 4th, 2011 | Author: Tommy Lawlor

I bought my Sporting News College Football Preview magazine yesterday. I’ve done that now for 17 straight years. It is the best college preview magazine there is, from a national standpoint. I was thumbing through the magazine and I stumbled onto Iowa’s page. That’s when an interesting thought occurred to me.

Their defensive coordinator is a man named Norm Parker and he’s one of my favorite football coaches. Norm runs a simple defense. He plays mostly Cover 2 behind a 4-3 front that attacks upfield with a 1-gap scheme. He likes light defensive linemen that can penetrate and be disruptive. Norm believes in keeping things simple and letting his players play fast. Sound familiar?

Juan Castillo’s son Greg is a DB for Iowa. I know Juan goes to games when he can and he obviously watches every Iowa game. I wonder how much of an influence Iowa has had on his defensive ideas.

The Hawkeyes are very good defensively.

                2010 — 25th in yards, 7th in points

                2009 — 10th in yards, 8th in points

                2008 — 13th in yards, 5th in points

                2007 — 36th in yards, 12th in points

You can see they are really hard to score on. Obviously that is a key point for us. The last 2 years we were solid in terms of yards allowed, but poor in terms of points allowed.

Iowa doesn’t get great recruits. They take good players and find the right spot for them in Norm’s system. They develop the players in the weight room and on the practice field. The best thing about the defense is how it functions as a unit. You know the old saying…the whole is better than the sum of the parts, that’s Iowa defense. They play really good team defense, a weakness of the 2009-2010 Eagles.

I don’t know if Iowa and Norm Parker did have influence on Castillo or if this is pure coincidence. If Castillo did choose to borrow some ideas from them, that’s fine with me. Parker is a terrific coach. As a Penn State fan who once saw his team lose 6-4 to Iowa, I can personally attest that they know how to play defense.

                  7/31/11 Practice Update...

Per Jimmy Kempski..."Juan Castillo just yelled at all the LB's, made them do push-ups. Fans cheer in approval. Fans seem to LOVE when players get yelled at."

Juan is already starting on second base when you consider he has 4 players on his defense that McDermott didn't have.

That said, the object of the game is the other team's quarterback must go down and down hard as Al Davis would say.

They HAVE to be able to get pressure with their front 4 and cover for 2.5 to 3 seconds with their back 4.

We will find out week 1 if they can do that.

If they can, Juan will be labeled a genius. If they can't, he will be labeled an idiot because who could fail with this personnel.
You know Darren if you'd have told me 10 years ago that someday I was going to solve the world's energy problems I'd have said your crazy.... now lets drop this big ball of oil out the window.

At this point, given the wide-9 and the coverage ability the Eagles have, you'd think teams are going to try to run right at the LBers. We are going to have to stop that.

Of course with those three CBs out there they could probably put 8 in the box on most plays.
