2011 Eagles Schedule Thoughts And Analysis

Now that we've got the schedule for the season that might not happen, let's pick it apart just in case it does... The Eagles kick off the year in a somewhat odd way with back to back road games. The second of those games is at Atlanta on national TV. That's a brutally tough spot. Bettors will tell you that one of their favorite bets in a given week is to go against a team playing in the second of back to back road games. When that back to back game is against a very good team that's really good at home... it's going to be tough. The one big positive there is that it's so early in the season before fatigue should be a major factor.

Plus, Michael Vick will enter that game as the starter for the first time since leaving Atlanta, so it's sure to hyped through the roof.
All in all, it's not a killer start to the season. Of the six teams they'll face before the bye, only one made the playoffs in 2010. Three of the teams are picking in the top 10 of this year's draft.

Andy Reid will then put his perfect after the bye record on the line against the Cowboys at the Linc on national TV. The Eagles are back on national TV the following week against the Bears, who finally have to come to Philadelphia. Deep down, even the Bears will have to be a little happy to not have to play on that awful surface at Soldier Field.

Speaking of teams I'd like to see us finally beat... The Patriots come to Philadelphia on November 27th. Andy Reid has lamented the couple three point losses he's had to Bill Belichick, including the Superbowl. It would be great to finally get over on them. As Jimmy pointed out, after the Pats game the Eagles have a trip to Seattle for a Thursday night game followed by another road trip to Miami to face the Dolphins. That's a rough stretch from a scheduling perspective. Plus, none of those teams are bad.

The end of the season is always tough to forecast because you never know who will be healthy or any good or have anything to play for at that point... but the Eagles get the Jets, who should be good and have something to play for and then the Cowboys, which should be a game with a little more meaning than the pointless one to end last season. The final game of the year is the Redskins and who doesn't like that?

Tougher than usual to get excited about release of Eagles' schedule

Even in the best of times with the NFL, the annual announcement of the regular-season schedule ranks somewhere on the excitement scale between flossing and checking your engine oil.

There is no mystery to the slate of opponents. With the slotted system the NFL put in place several years ago, the following season's opposition is known as soon as the last down of the regular season is recorded.

For more than three months, we have known the Eagles would be scheduled to play, aside from their division rivals, the teams in the NFC West, the teams in the AFC East, and, because they won the division, the first-place teams from the NFC North and NFC South. And we have known which would be home games and which on the road.

This is a reasonably fair system and helps keep the league's hunger for parity satiated by giving the better teams harder schedules and the lesser teams easier ones. It doesn't do much for suspense, however, regardless of the year, and particularly not this year.

The real unknown is whether the NFL will play football this season. The league wants a significantly bigger slice of the revenue. The players aren't inclined to give it up. Despite the billions of dollars on the table waiting to be divided, the real division is between the owners and the players, and while common sense says they will find a middle ground, it hasn't happened yet.

So, getting excited about the release of the actual schedule - the exact order and dates of the games - is more difficult than usual, and unless you really have a calendar fetish, it's always pretty difficult.

Still, we are forced to pretend. Sure, sure, there will be a season, and, yes, there are a couple of interesting things about the schedule, assuming it ever gets to be played.

Opening the season with two road games, and four of the first six on the road, might not be the smoothest way to start. But only one of those road teams (the Falcons) had a winning record in 2010, and if going to St. Louis for the opener is a problem, then there are going to be a lot of problems.

That part of the schedule is offset by the other end. At the close of the season, when teams are a little beaten up and could use some help from the schedule, the Eagles play just one team (the Jets) in the final five weeks that had a winning record in 2010.

In between, it's the usual mosh pit, with a bye after the sixth game, which is just about perfect, and three home games immediately following the bye. It's a good chance to bunker in and grind through the middle of the schedule, and, also promising, just one of those three straight home games is against a 2010 winner (Chicago).

Of course. The Bears again, for the fifth straight year. And the Falcons, for the fourth straight year. And the 49ers, for the sixth time in seven seasons. Eagles fans have seen a lot more of Alex Smith than they have of Kevin Kolb. Those opponents were already known and their placement in the schedule doesn't make them any more or less interesting.

If you like prime-time games, then you like this schedule. The Eagles are set to play five evening games - three on NBC Sunday night, one on ESPN Monday night, and one fabulous Thursday night game in Seattle courtesy of the NFL Network, may its coffee beans roast in hell.

Fans look at these things differently than those who have to play the games or work at them. It's fine to hope for a Thanksgiving game so you have an excuse not to go to your wife's family again and listen to her brother talk about the new siding and the repair job he did on the sump pump. It's quite another to have to tell people you will need to be in Dallas for a game on Christmas Eve and won't be able to get out that night. The Eagles' traveling party has that pleasure this coming season - if it happens. And, friends, there's nothing quite like a bright and early 1 p.m. start on New Year's Day. The Eagles have that, too, but at least it's a home game and the end of the regular season.

That seems a long way away, the end of the regular season, and if it arrives, there will first be a slog through a fair but well-ordered schedule. The Eagles should have no complaints with it. If Michael Vick is still the quarterback, it might even help that six of the eight road games are on speedy artificial turf, and three of those are in domed, climate-controlled stadiums.

But we knew all that before. Now we know the when that goes with the who and the where. What we still don't know, however, is the "if." That might take a while to figure out. And worrying about the end of the regular season doesn't make much sense if there's no guarantee there will be a beginning to it.

          zero wins,zero games
We're looking for people that are fundamentally different,” vice president of player personnel Andy Weidl said Saturday night. “The love and passion for football, it's non-negotiable. They're caring, their character, they do the right thing persistently, and they have a relentless playing style that you can see on tape. The motor, it burns hot. You see them finishing plays. They have a team-first mentality. They're selfless individuals.

The Eagles would be undefeated for the first time ever. That would be kind of cool.

14-2 and I would go higher if not for the nasty 3 games in 2 weeks going from East coast to west coast and back .IMO very good chance to start 10-0

                      1 11-Sep PHI @ STL 1:00 PM

*(W)I really like what the Rams have done this off-season, quietly improved their team in a measured and smart way. They are young, but have a good amount of talent and should be better...good to catch them week 1.

                      2 18-Sep PHI @ ATL 8:20 PM

*(L)This is gonna be a tough, emotional game for Vick's return vs a good team which excels at home. Think we lose a squeaker, by a FG.

                      3 25-Sep NYG @ PHI 1:00 PM

*(W)We bounce back in our home opener vs a Giants team which is still trying to put their house in order. The D shines today and helps bring home the win with a late turnover which the O executes on for the go-ahead score.

                      4 2-Oct SF @ PHI 1:00 PM

*(W)The D shines again confusing Smith & shutting down Gore. ST delivers a big difference here as Henery kicks 3 FG and also has a good day on returns with Moss & Higgins.

                      5 9-Oct PHI @ BUF 1:00 PM

*(W)The Bills are improved, but just cannot hang with the Eagles in the 2nd half as we pull away due to turnovers and good red zone execution.

                      6 16-Oct PHI @ WAS 1:00 PM

*(W) This time we get over the pre-bye week slump and beat the Skins soundly in their house. The O carries the day vs the weak secondary and Vick has a good passing outing with McCoy helping on several scores.

                      7 Bye

                      8 30-Oct DAL @ PHI 8:20 PM

*(W)Lot of talk before this game by Ryan and Romo....Eagles let their play do the talking and beat the Cowboys in a closely fought battle predicated by the field position game and again good D performance.

                      9 7-Nov CHI @ PHI 8:30 PM

*(W)Eagles are rolling now and the Bears take a step back from last season's overachievement. The DL brings the heat on Cutler and Samuel takes one to the house. The O controls the ball with McCoy/Brown and Avant has a big day.

                      10 13-Nov ARI @ PHI 1:00 PM

*(W)Cards got their QB finally, but still do not have the full team to match the Eagles...we get after Kolb, but he makes us pay some of the time while our O racks up the points with Maclin & Jackson providing the highlights.

                      11 20-Nov PHI @ NYG 8:20 PM

*(L)The Giants rise up and knock off the top division dog in a close and heated game married by penalties on the Eagles OL and DL and some poor decisions by Vick. Hicks has a big game across the middle and Manningham gets a deep one over DRC.

                      12 27-Nov NE @ PHI 4:15 PM

*(W)Eagles bounce back again and win a nailbiter vs the Pats who have been rolling along well up to that point. The D really stands out and Celek beats NE LB for two scores down the middle. McCoy is a stable force for much of the game and provides the outlet for Vick.

                      13 1-Dec PHI @ SEA 8:20 PM

*(L)Thursday night after an emotional couple of weeks hits the Eagles hard and they lose a sloppy contest played in a driving cold rain/sleet in Seattle. Two bad turnovers in the red zone and a fumble on ST give the Hawks the advantage they need.

                      14 11-Dec PHI @ MIA 1:00 PM

*(W)Shades of 2003 in Miami...McCoy, Brown and Vick shred the Dolphins D on the ground and retain the ball for almost half the game. The well rested D does the rest, forcing Henne into 3 turnovers and 1 converted for a TD.

                      15 18-Dec NYJ @ PHI 4:15 PM

*(L)Tough scrap which the Eagles lose on a final minute TD gadget play--Sanchez to LT to Holmes who throws a short red zone strike to Burress over Hanson...10-7 game or thereabouts. Defensive slugfest.

                      16 24-Dec PHI @ DAL 4:15 PM

*(L)Vick is banged up for this game and Reid rests him for the playoffs...VY steps in and the O does not miss too many beats, but the D gets exposed a bit by Felix Jones and Miles Austin as Romo uses play action well and hard counts the DL several times on 3rd & 4th and short situations to stay on the field. Henery misses a makable FG that comes back to haunt us.

                      17 1-Jan WAS @ PHI 1:00 PM

*(W)Vick returns and the team gets back on track with a good win vs an improved Skins team...Henry's punts keep them pinned and the D takes care of Grossman who replaced Beck halfway thru the season. Chaney & Fokou make tackles all over the place and cause 2 fumbles.

                      11-5
Eliminate distractions, create energy, fear nothing, and attack everything.

                      -Andy Reid
