Would Charles Johnson make sense for the Eagles?

Juqua Parker’s production, at least from the perspective of sacks, has been decent for a left defensive end over the past five years:

    Juqua ParkerSacksFF
    2006 6 1
    2007 5 2
    2008 5 1
    2009 8 2
    2010 6 1

Some of his time over that span was as a starting LDE, although the majority of it was spent as part of the Eagles LDE rotation that included current players like Brandon Graham, to others that are long since gone, like Jevon Kearse. By my count, only three players have been with the Eagles longer: K David Akers, S Quintin Mikell, and C Jamaal Jackson – Akers and Mikell are all but goners, and Parker should find himself squarely on the endangered list as he just turned 33 in May and is scheduled to make $3.5 million in 2011.

In free agency this year, there are two very intriguing defensive ends out there that the Eagles could pursue, that also just happen to play LDE – Charles Johnson of the Panthers and Ray Edwards of the Vikings. I’ll focus on Johnson. The Panthers franchised C Ryan Kalil instead of Johnson, so if players with 4 years of NFL experience are free to pursue free agency under the new CBA, Johnson can field offers from any interested bidders.

Johnson would be a huge get, as he really came into his own as a stud pass rusher last season, somehow collecting 11.5 sacks on a terrible Panthers team that was always playing from behind and facing a heavy dose of the run. But the great thing about Johnson – he turns 25 in July. Obviously, the Eagles invested a lot in Brandon Graham last season as they traded a healthy bounty to move up to 13 in the 2010 draft, but he’s not likely to be ready for the beginning of the season after tearing his ACL last year. Even if you’re the Eagles and you believe that Graham is still bound for stardom, you can never have too many good pass rushers – Look no further than the 2007 Giants, who won the Super Bowl on the strength of their absurdly deep and talented DL.

The downside, obviously, is that Johnson will cost a boatload of money. If the Eagles do indeed try to sign a DE (a position they’ve historically placed a heavy value on), they can offset some of that cost by cutting Parker and his $3.5 million salary in 2011.

Johnson would be a perfect fit he's young and just coming into his prime and a guy I think the Birds will target.

I heard on Sirius that Carolina is well over $50 million under the projected cap. If so, I think the Eagles have about as much chance of signing Johnson as Carolina has of signing Michael Vick. If that happens though...Would Peyton Manning Make Sense For the Eagles?

Pat Kirwan paints sad picture for Panthers free agency
by James Dator on Jul 19, 2011 8:34 AM EDT

NFL.com senior analyst Pat Kirwan held a chat yesterday discussing free agency, and giving his thoughts on who could end up where. One thing that grabbed me was Kirwan saying that teams and agents could already have deals in principal worked out. Throughout this process much was made of teams not being able to contact players, but there weren't any provisions to keep teams away from agents- therefore, negotiations could have been happening for a long time, as long as there wasn't any direct contact between the team and player, and kept hush-hush.

The quote I found most troubling as a Panthers' fan was when Kirwan was asked which teams stand to benefit from a short free agency:
Very good football teams with stability and an established QB will be very attractive to free agents. and if those teams make good offers, then I think players will jump at them. How does Carolina, for example, recruit a quality free agent? They'll have trouble keeping their own players.
It's easy to dismiss statements like this, but there's also a grain of truth to them. We've heard from Steve Smith that he just wants to win, Charles Johnson wants to win, DeAngelo Williams wants to win... the list goes on. As a fan who will be attached to this team for years to come it's easy to say "Things will get better!", but we don't have a 4-5 year window on our career like a lot of players do. If Kirwan is right we could be in for an ugly FA period.

Despite all the doom and gloom from Kirwan , we have some information from a local source. Former Panthers' beat writer Darin Gantt may not be covering the team professionally, but that doesn't mean he is in the dark about the team's intentions. Yesterday via Twitter he said this about the Panthers' plans in FA:
If everything goes as planned, we're a week from Panthers chance to crimp FA market. They definitely want to keep both Johnson and Williams.
So, if the Panthers want to keep them both, and have the money to keep them both then it should make things a lot easier when it comes to trying to resign players.

For what it's worth Kirwan believes DeAngelo Williams will leave the Carolina Panthers and join the Denver Broncos. It may be a little too convenient to have Williams to Denver, because so much of this line of thinking is assuming that John Fox and D-Will have some sort of special bond that transcends the South. If there's one thing we know about Williams it's that he was ecstatic on draft day to stay in the South-East, and asking him to move to Colorado would be a big sell.

In the end, we're back at our pre-draft status of 'time will tell'. I think this free agency will come down to Hurney and Rivera needing to sell players on their brand of football better than another team can sell them on their 2010 record; that's easier said than done.

          7/23/11 Update...

According to the Charlotte Observer, the Falcons are expected to "make a run" at free agent LE Charles Johnson.

Divisional foes, the Falcons are as familiar with Johnson as anybody outside of Carolina. However, they would have to break the bank to secure his services, as the Panthers are expected to make keeping their left end their number one priority. Carolina has more cap space than the vast majority of teams.

Well they all say they want to win. But we all know thanks to our Bud MD that it's ALWAYS ABOUT THE MONEY!!! And if we were all in the same boat we'd be the same way!

Exactly. A few teams are well under and they will need to spend a lot just to get to the floor. Which means that some of these guys may be available but other teams are going to massively overpay.

Unless someone takes less money to come to the Eagles I don't think FA is going to be all that great.

                7/24/11 Update...

ESPN's John Clayton considers the Browns a darkhorse candidate for free agent DE Charles Johnson.

We've seen several reports connecting Johnson to the Falcons, but this is the first we've read of Cleveland as a possibility. Though the Browns are looking for a starter opposite rookie Jabaal Sheard, the Panthers are expected to do everything in their power to bring Johnson back.

Eagles won't sign him - that would all but confirm Graham is a bust (which we all know already)

"bust" is certainly a bit harsh. But it would mean they are concerned about his injury situation and likely future, for sure.

It will suddenly become very interesting if Johnson doesn't sign right away. All reports seem to be that Carolina has him as the top priority and they have the money to do it, so if he doesn't sign he might just want to get outta Dodge.

All other things the same, players usually want to stay with their team if they make the best offer, unless there's bad blood (which there isn't in this case).

Still, if he decides he wants a change of scenery and to go to a winner, I think the Eagles would be very interested if they had a shot at him. The only question is with Graham, and if they want to tie up all that money in the DE position.

Edit: It's also more interesting now that they've apparently done away with the 3 day window teams had to exclusively negotiate with their players.

Well, he signed right away. Damn it.

Panthers agreed to terms with DE Charles Johnson on a six-year, $76 million contract, including a whopping $30 million signing bonus.

The deal has $32 million in guarantees. Re-signing the top pass rusher on the market was enough of a priority that GM Marty Hurney flew to Miami Tuesday to meet directly with Johnson. The Gaston Gazette confirms Johnson was contacted by the Falcons -- as expected. The Broncos also came calling, perhaps confirmation that coach John Fox will aggressively court his former players. The total money is nearly as strong as Julius Peppers' Bears contract, effectively keeping Johnson from waiting until Friday to see how many suitors would line up.
