I see us keeping 10 DL. And,in the light of all the injuries we have had, Teo probably now sticks. I still think that they find a way to keep Hanson, but I may be wrong. Certainly, some things will get resolved in camp/preseason.

Locks, bubble boys, and difficult cuts: A far too early look at the 31 players fighting for the final 13 roster spots

After attending Eagles training camp for a week, I thought it might be fun to figure out which guys are locks, which guys are on the bubble, and what camp battles remain to be fought. After putting it all down on paper, I reached a very disheartening conclusion - The Eagles are going to have to cut a lot of good players. First, lets get the locks out of the way. I should note that these locks don't factor in potential trades. For example, if there's a crunch at DE, the Eagles could consider trading Juqua Parker and his $3.5 million salary, but I highly doubt they'd just cut him outright. The same could be said for others like Joselio Hanson, or even Asante Samuel if a "too good to turn down" offer presented itself.

Here's where it gets really tricky. Last year around this time, there were probably about 20 or so players "on the bubble." This year I have 31 players fighting for the remaining 13 spots, meaning that 18 bubble players are going to be cut. That's what happens when you draft 10+ players every year. The best players from your draft classes survive, but there are some legitimate NFL caliber casualties that simply can't fit onto the roster.

Here are my bubble players. Keep in mind that they are fighting against all the bubble players, not just those players at their individual positions. Plus, they also have to worry about guys getting cut from other teams around the league that the Eagles could potentially pick up, not to mention... free agency still isn't even over.

First Eagles depth chart released on PE.com: Thoughts and analysis

The Eagles released their first depth chart this morning, and there are a few interesting little things to be found within it. Team depth charts are to be taken with a grain of salt (I mean, we don't even really know who puts these things together *Spuds?*), but as fans, we're going to obsess over them anyway, so we may as well get right to it. I listed them here to make it easier for discussion, and I have a few thoughts. First, the offense:

- Jason Kelce is getting most of the reps with the 1's, but the depth chart is still hanging onto J Jax as the starter.

- Mike McGlynn is listed as a G, not a C.

- Hooray! Ryan Harris is listed as the starting RT. Winston Justice is on the PUP, so he's not listed. I'm not a huge King Dunlap fan, but even still, I'm not sure how he's listed behind Fenuki Tupou. Tupou has been dreadful all camp long.

- I know everyone is in love with DeAndre Brown's size, but he's right where I'd have put him, too.

Defense:

- A couple of incumbents are listed over the new guys on the D: Juqua Parker over Jason Babin, and Antonio Dixon over Cullen Jenkins.

- It's a shame Charlie Noonan can't switch names with someone that's going to make the team. It would be fun yelling "Noonan!" Caddyshack style.

- Seeing Casey Matthews' name as the starting MLB should only be a surprise if this is the first thing you've read about Eagles training camp.

- Trevard Lindley ahead of Joselio Hanson is a mild surprise. Hanson has primarily been running with the 1's in the nickle, even ahead of DRC.

- Unless they stash Curtis Marsh on the IR, anyone that thinks Brandon Hughes is making the team over Marsh is crazy. I'm reading that people are starting to come around on Marsh, by the way. I was beginning to doubt my eye for talent.

- I think they have the FS and SS positions flip-flopped. No surprises there otherwise.

Special Teams:

- No sign of D Jax as the punt returner. I'm sure teams around the league will be perfectly happy with DeSean not returning punts against them. The Eagles would be crazy not to utilize his supreme talents in that role.

- I like that they list the "Holder" on the depth chart. I wonder if they're the only team in the league that does that.

What do you guys think?

Musicman, I think Harris makes the team before Dunlap/Howard/Topou. I also think they keep Hanson ahead of Teo.

OK, time to recalibrate. 54 guys down here, I can't figure out who to cut to get to 53. It's between Colt Anderson and Donald Lee, the third tight end, and Trevard Lindley and Teo or Hunt.


QB: Vick, Young, Kafka. No surprises here.

RB: McCoy, Brown, Schmitt, Lewis, Cooper. I think they go the full five here and that Graig Cooper plays his way onto the team. I like Cooper a lot. Buckley only makes it if they really, really need his special teams work.

WR: Maclin, Jackson, Avant, Cooper, Higgins. Here's where I think they go light. I don't think they keep both Higgins and Moss around. I think it's one or the other, and while Moss has been impressive so far, he's got a history of impressing in training camp and not during the season. Just ask Giant fans. I'm praying that Chad Hall gets dropped. But he's the new Reno Mahe.

TE: Celek, Harbor, Lee. Martell Webb to the practice squad. No, Cornelius Ingram is not making the team, much to the disappointment of Ingram's many admirers.

OL: Peters, Herremans, Jackson, Watkins, Harris, Kelce, Mathis, Justice, Howard, Vandewelde. I originally had Kelce going to the practice squad. Dumb. He might be your Week 1 starter at center. He's the new Jeff Saturday. Can't wait to see him in action. Kelce's rise in the depth chart spells doom for McGlynn, IMO. McGlynn isn't even listed on the depth chart at center anymore, and they have plenty of other guys who are probably better guard backups, particularly Mathis.

DL: Cole, Babin, Patterson, Dixon, Jenkins, Laws, Hargrove, Tapp, Parker, Teo, Hunt. Damn. I've got 11 here and I just don't know who's gone. Hargrove is playing his way onto the team very rapidly, which would give them five DT's assuming Patterson can return to the field. All five make it, IMO. I'd go with five DE's as well, but I don't know which one goes. I really want Hunt and his great first step to make the team, but Teo was a third-round pick and he's apparently playing better this year. That's going to be a tight battle for that spot. I don't see them trading Parker.

LB: Chaney, Matthews, Fokou, Jordan, Clayton. With all of these nickel formations they are running out and Asomugha playing the Woodson role, maybe they've only got 2 LB's on the field for most defensive plays. Maybe they keep five because of that. Who knows? If they keep five, these are the five. Rolle and Lloyd have not impressed much and both go to the practice squad, IMO. Jeanty, I don't think he has a spot. There still may be a spot here for a veteran pickup. You need linebackers for special teams.

CB: Asomugha, DRC, Samuel, Marsh, Lindley: I still think they are moving Hanson and keeping both Marsh and Lindley. Marsh has been very good. If they keep hanson, Lindley may be gone, which would be a shame. Can't see them keeping six corners, especially with Hughes maybe on the practice squad.

S: Allen, Jarrett, Coleman, Page, Anderson: Marlin Jackson has a groin problem, he's toast. Question is whether they keep Page and Anderson. Anderson can't cover anybody, but he's here for special teams excellence. Do they keep Page?

Specialists: Henery, Henry, Dorenbos.

I'd be amazed if Justice and Patterson are not on the PuP or IR. And I can easily see Cooper not on the roster

It was early,I'm willing to make my first update,I agree with Harris, but IMO Lindley will lose out to Hanson,I thought Hanson looked great at camp and had a swagger,while Lindley seemed lost.

Recalibrating, recalibrating, recalibrating. Steve Smith is a huge new wrinkle, of course. So much for going light at WR. Could Trevor Laws be cut?

Mike Patterson and Jeremy Maclin are listed on active roster here, but both are huge question marks right now, obviously.


QB: Vick, Young, Kafka. No surprises here, other than the fact that Kafka may be the true Number 2.

RB: McCoy, Brown, Schmitt, Lewis. I had Graig Cooper making the team before and he still might. I don't think he will stay on the practice squad for long. Cooper and Locke to the practice squad? They sure have a lot of nifty scatback types in camp.

WR: Maclin, Jackson, Avant, Cooper, Smith, Higgins. Steve Smith is on the active roster on opening day, it says here. Could Maclin be PUP'd?

TE: Celek, Harbor, Lee. They could still go with 2 here and cut Lee, but I doubt it. Spadaro is always mentioning Lee as an important pickup, and he knows things about what the coaches think. He just has to be careful about how he discusses it. Spuds has a tough job.

OL: Peters, Herremans, Jackson, Watkins, Harris, Kelce, Mathis, Justice, Howard. I'm going with 9 here and Dunlap, McGlynn, Topou, Vandewelde being the primary cuts. Vandewelde goes to the practice squad, maybe Topou as well if he's still eligible. I think Justice makes the team even if Harris beats him out at RT because of Harris' injury history. I don't think they get rid of Justice for cap space. I think they keep four tackles but maybe McGlynn beats out Howard because of his versatility.

DL: Cole, Babin, Patterson, Dixon, Jenkins, Laws, Hargrove, Tapp, Parker, Teo. I'm reluctantly saying goodbye to Hunt. Teo is apparently outplaying him. Some folks seem to think Laws may not be long for the active roster. Boy, that would surprise me. But I do think that Mudd and Washburn will each lop off a guy that surprises us because they just don't fit what they want to do. Maybe Laws is that guy here. Would that open up a spot for Thornton or Landri? Could Patterson open season on PUP or IR? I'm still assuming he's back, but that's very much up in the air.

LB: Chaney, Matthews, Fokou, Jordan, Clayton. Same five as before. Maybe 6 if they add a vet.

CB: Asomugha, DRC, Samuel, Marsh, Hanson. Word seems to be floating around that Lindley could get the axe. Would that open up a spot for Brandon Hughes on the active roster? I think they are keeping five here. Can't see them keeping six. With Marsh looking so good, it's easily the best-fortified position on the team.

S: Allen, Jarrett, Coleman, Page, Anderson: OK, will keep five here. Colt stays for special teams and Page sticks around while Jarrett gets up to speed. Marlin Jackson remains a dark horse candidate to make the squad, believe it or not. He is apparently feeling much better after his sports hernia surgery.

Specialists: Henery, Henry, Dorenbos.

I'm not going to speculate on the 53, but I will say that Patterson has zero chance of being on it. My gurss is he goes to the PUP list and then to IR for this year and possibly forever. He's a good kid an the FO loves him. Hopefully, they don't encourage him to come back for at least this year.
