  • What do you think we could get in a trade?

We have assets to deal and it's debatable as to what we'd get in return. Let's start with two obvious ones - Asante & DeSean Jackson.

    Here's what it looks like:

Asante has two years left on his deal. He'll make $8.4MM in salary in '12 and $10.4 MM in '13. If the Eagles trade him this off-season, they'll take a $2MM cap hit but obviously that pales in comparison to the $9.4MM cap hit if they keep him. While $8.4MM looks like alot of $, it isn't in the eyes of a championship caliber team that would want to get a cover corner like Asante. Plus, remember that $10.4MM in '13 is not guaranteed so the acquiring team could cut Samuel after this upcoming season and not take any hits. Do you think a Green Bay or New Orleans or a beat up Pittsburgh would be interested in Asante? I do.

Desean - we can tag him and look for a trade. The tag for WRs next year will be about $9.5MM. We can always drop the tag and just cut him but it at least allows us to gauge the market. I'm coming around to the idea that we move on from Desean. Go get a Vincent Jackson or Marques Colston or Dwayne Bowe in free agency and move on.

I'm sure there are others you can come up with in terms of trade candidates (Jamaal Jackson, Winston Justice, Joselio Hanson). Do some homework and give me legit values. Nobody is giving up multiple first round picks for anybody but would Desean and one of our 2nd rounders get us a first in return? Perhaps. Have at it.

I really would like multiple first rounds. I can see Asante and our second going to say Detroit who had alot of interest in Asante for Detroits first.

DeSean really has zero trade value. Not with the free agents available, and the amount of dollars DeSean wants. The other thing is I think DeSean signs the tag right away. He is not going to get that type of guranteed money on the open market

I think Asante gets you at best a third or fourth. Unless you trade him straight up for a player. I have zero problems with this as long as they lock up DRC. Asante is basically a salary dump.

DeSean gets you possibly a second rounder. I am not 100% sold on that because other teams have been watching him and his antics. But some team should be willing to take him on. I think DeSean and a second rounder EASILY gets you into the first round.

I would love any of the trio of WR's you mentioned.

I see most others being released. If not maybe getting a very low rounder.

I'm also thinking they just move on from DeSean, but I wouldn't try to extract maximum value here. With the FA market full of WR's, if they try to do a move where they tag him and try to move him, I think it will blow up on them.

        Asante gets you a 3rd or a 4th.

I think they go through the whole off-season saying they will take absolutely nothing less than a 2nd for Asante. Everyone will bitch about how stubborn they are. And then they will ultimately settle for a 3rd. (Isn't that how this dance usually goes?)

DeSean is going to be veeeeeeery interesting to see play out. I honestly feel as if they wouldn't mind having him back, but I also think they wouldn't mind if he left. So if I had to guess, they franchise him, and then go hard after whoever it is that they feel is their top target. They will be very vocal about the fact that they are talking to all of the top receivers on the market, which will give them some leverage. If DeSean signs the franchise tender, great...then they have time to negotiate with DeSean. If he doesn't sign, they attempt to the top FA in their eyes, and if they do, they pull back the franchise tender.

If they do franchise and trade him, I'm thinking it's similar to Asante. They demand a 2nd, and ultimately settle for a 3rd. The market for top receivers is pretty deep.

The Eagles have always shown that if they want someone back, they sign him before his contract expires. They clearly don't think DJ is important. All this posturing is to get a good trade for him if at all possible. But you know what? They're gonna get dick for him because the rest of the league isn't full of idiots either.

It's not like we have an Ed Wade to fleece. Well, maybe Grigson will be our huckleberry.

You don't think a Cal guy like Desean available with a Davis still running the show in Oakland won't swoon over a chance at getting him?

If it was Al Davis, sure. But he dead!

We're not the only people who people who know the Eagles MO. Everyone else knows they don't intend to sign him and that a franchise tag would be a game of chicken between the Eagles, DJ, and another team.

I'm not giving up anything more than a low low second rounder for DJ given the circumstances. (And I love his game.) And the Eagles have always asked for too much in trade negotiations.

If I do a deal with the Eagles because he's franchised, I better have the terms to his contract fleshed out already. It's not like he's a one year rental to get you over the hump. And it's not like he's old.

He can play for Eagles for 1 year at franchise tag money. I'll pick him up next year. Someone is going to offer DJ a lot of money. But I don't think anyone is gonna offer the Eagles much for him. Despite all the talk from the Eagles FO about how great DJ was following the benching, the benching basically destroyed much of his trade value.

If they tag him they won't get much for him. Personally if t were me running the show I'd tag him and if I couldn't trade him I'd let him play under the tag. If he sucks I cut him and take the financial hit of a few million bucks. If he plays his ass off in what is still a contract year, then I tag him again and trade him or sign him long term. There's little risk and a lot of reward if they roll the dice with him.

What's the tag on WRs? It's gotta be north of 8M.

I think I read somewhere that it will be around $9.5M. That being the case, it would be pretty dumb to sign him to a franchise 1-year deal when you can use similar money (in year 1 of a long term deal) to sign one of the other big names on the market and know you'll have that player for X-number of years into the future and not just 1.

As someone else said, I'm kind of warming to the idea of saying good-bye.

This all presumes that the Eagles can land one of the other big name FA's. There are 31 other teams, many of which will have the same thought. And that is the one benefit of the franchise tag that we all tend to overlook, myself include. You can let DeSean walk, but it's no gaurantee that we wind up with the replacement that we all want. At least if you franchise DeSean and sign him to the tender, you know you have a difference-maker under contract. (Save arguements over whether or not DeSean has dropped from elite status of difference maker for another thread.)

No reason you can't tag him and then go look for Vincent Jackson. If Vincent signs you remove the tag from DJ.

That seems like something the NFLPA wouldn't allow. There's gotta be some financial penalty for removing the tag. Otherwise you could REALLY screw over a player.

Nah, I'm pretty sure you can remove the tag. The issue with Desean is that many would expect him to sign the tag right away. If you can't trade him you are in a bind in trying to get someone else.
Unfortunately, I would like to know if they could get anything for Vick. I don't think they can. Someone may want him but wouldn't want to give much and wouldn't want to pay him.
Otherwise, I'm not sure the birds have anyone that will get you anything. Sure they have McCoy and Peters but you aren't letting them go. WRs are okay but not great. OL is okay but not great. Cole might get you something but I don't think you get the value that he gives you on the DL. Otherwise the DL is nothing special. LBs- be serious. CBs, the big three all would be worthy of discussion but I don't think you get much for Hanson, maybe a 5th but I would guess 6th. I also don't think we have a safety that anyone wants.
Like training camp we may think people are lined up for our castoffs but generally they are not. If you can peddle Asante do it but I think the birds need to use the picks they have to try to get a second first round pick. Tag Desean and trade if you can but otherwise keep him and tell him you'll bench him if he pulls any crap.
Wait until next year is a terrible philosophy
                            Hope is not a strategy

How does that work? You say "we're gonna tag you" so DJ figures he's gonna make $9.5M in 2012. Then they remove the tag and cut you during training camp? Can they do that?
