  • SB XXXIX - coaching error?

Saw this in the TMQ article at ESPN.com - maybe I've been under a rock for years, but I don't recall hearing/seeing this story. Is this correct? If so, ugh. No excuse for that.

Midway through the 2005 Super Bowl against the Philadelphia Eagles, New England safety Eugene Wilson went out injured, which sent a rookie into the game. But the Eagles' coaching staff did not realize there was a backup at safety until about five minutes remained. Then the Eagles, who had only one receiver per side most of the second half, lined up with double wides and ran a deep post at the new defender -- touchdown. The Patriots held on to win by three. Had Philadelphia attacked the novice safety earlier, the outcome could have been different.

There were so many fucking mistakes in that game that this just joins the list. From the start of the game, when the Pats lined up in a 2-5-4, daring the Eagles to run the ball (they never did), to the end of the game, when the Eagles decided to take their time going down the field, that game was just FUBAR all the way.
Don't kid yourself Jimmy. If a cow ever got the chance, he'd kill you and everyone you cared about!

But, Andy Reid is a great coach.

Seems a bit too simplistic but I could be wrong. There could be a variety of reasons the eagles were doing things the way they were. I am not dismissing it but it seems too easy to make this an issue. For a moment lets assume that the coaches completely missed the injury. Wouldn't the players notice it and report back: Hey that rookie is in coverage every play, lets take advantage of it.

too easy to just blame the coaches. If they indeed missed it, the blame falls upon the coaches on the field and the booth and the players.

I've tried to forget as much of that game as possible.

            I can't believe they would've missed that.

But, say Vin, here's a tangent. The week that the new "Underworld" movie came out, I think it was #1 even though a lot of critics had panned it. It looks like audiences believe that Kate Beckinsale + tights + gunfire = fun movies!

No sense in looking back. Just because somebody like JJ missed it, you don't have to worry about that kind of thing happening with Juan.

balto - underworld movies have always been about Kate Beckinsale in a skintight outfight with ridiculous sword and gun fights. What were the critics expecting, Citizen Kane?
