Be Karl Malone? And the girl was 13 when she had this guy? Holy crap that's messed up.

This is the story that I read too. Sad that this guy has had to go through life like that, with one parent shunning him. If he didn't shun him, wouldn't Karl be admitting to his dirty deed?

If Malone was a sophomore when he got her pregnant then I can begin to understand his reluctance to formally acknowledged Bell as his child. He could be charged with statutory rape since he would have been about 19 and the mother was only 13. I'm not condoning him in any way, just pointing out that by admitting that he's Bell's Father could land him in jail for a long time and provide him with a new nickname when he got out - sex offender. He had more to lose than just child support so his silence, while repugnant was probably the smarter thing for him to do.... other than leaving a 13 year old alone!!!

He did acknowledge his two other kids he's had out of wedlock -- when they reached 17 years old. So there's that.

Karl is smart. Why pay for them when you can wait till they turn 17?

I'm surprised Karl didn't name him Detritus.

We're looking for people that are fundamentally different,” vice president of player personnel Andy Weidl said Saturday night. “The love and passion for football, it's non-negotiable. They're caring, their character, they do the right thing persistently, and they have a relentless playing style that you can see on tape. The motor, it burns hot. You see them finishing plays. They have a team-first mentality. They're selfless individuals.

And this is the genious of the NFL, if even by accident due to the equipment. Keep these guys faceless as much as you can. Have people root for the uniform. The more that you learn about these guys, the more you get disgusted. I've met many Pros along the years, but I've refused many more invitations. I choose to live in my own little "fantasy world" when it comes to athletes rather than meet most of these pieces of shit. It's nice to read about the exceptions, but they are rare.

After reading the piece BP linked in the opening post in this thread, I'd say 'douche' is one of the kinder labels for Malone.

This line in particular struck me:
'According to Bell, Malone told him it was too late for him to be his father, and he'd have to make it on his own.'
Imagine being a little kid and having your father say that to you. What a piece of shit!

Bell may not be the best tackle in the NFL and he may be injury prone, but the linked piece suggests he's grown into a very decent man despite having a shit head for a father. Perhaps Bell was better off never having Malone in his life.

It's a good point him wanting to keep it off the radar, although at this point I'd imagine there's a statute of limitations that has passed.
