Joe Banner Couldn’t Help But Reveal Battle With Reid

I’m sure Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie was shaking his head when he read about former team President Joe Banner laughing about the deal the Birds signed with speedy wide receiver DeSean Jackson.

Lurie along with Banner, head coach Andy Reid and team COO Don Smolenski had put together a charade a couple of weeks ago to give all of us the impression that Banner wasn’t fired but had merely decided to go elsewhere in pursuit of a more stimulating challenge.

They all did a good that during the news conference except for when Lurie made a couple of mentions about he had to do what was best for the organization. I was about to swallow some of it until he said that. Now we all know it wasn’t really what had happened.

Banner let the cat out of bag because he couldn’t help but make his side of the arguments that have been going on in the Nova Care Complex be known publicly. Lurie’s life long friend communicated his side of the story in an interview with the Boston Globe.

According to Greg Bedard of the Globe, Banner is “having a good laugh” at the Jackson deal. Here’s what he wrote.

“In his office that is still inside the Eagles’ NovaCare facility, former team president Joe Banner is having a good laugh. Jackson received his $47 million extension, in good measure, because Banner had his contract power usurped. Banner never would have done that deal”.

Clearly the former Eagles President didn’t make this deal and wouldn’t have made this deal with Jackson if he had been in charge of the negotiations.

This is one of the reasons Jackson was quoted on Philly.com last week talking about how “crucial” the 2012 season is to everybody in the organization. Jackson and his future with the Eagles is on the line and the guy who fought for him and his new contract, Reid have got to deliver with a big year.

Surely Reid has sat down with the key members of his football team like Jackson, quarterback Michael Vick and let them know what the situation is here with the football team. They must at least have a big year and go deep into the playoffs.

Truth is they want more than that so they can validate the decision by Reid to stand up to Banner and initiate the battle that led to the ouster of the Boston-native from his team President position.

Reid had been the good soldier in the past when Banner had refused to allow him to hang onto a player, who he thought could help the football team. The situation had changed now because Reid’s job is on the line going into the 2012 season.

He was no longer willing to stand aside and let Banner make de facto roster moves by low-balling players Reid wanted to keep but he wanted to get rid of.

The Jackson negotiation was a central point of the team’s post season meetings. Reid was on one side and Banner was on the other. According to an article in the Los Angeles Times by Sam Farmer, Reid laid it all on the line when he gave Lurie and the Eagles an ultimatum. Either he gets the power to overrule Banner on roster moves or he’s ready to leave the organization.

Obviously, we can see the Reid was the winner of the battle and Lurie knew during the struggle that it was time to say good-bye to Banner and his methods of running the
    "Hey Giants, who's your Daddy?"

I had suspected all along that Banner would not have signed Jackson to that contract. That seemed out of character. And I guess Banner didn't want to stay if he couldn't negotiate the deals like that. He could have remained president and not done football deals (like Smolenski will) but it's a bit of a demotion.

Definitely feels good in the short term, but the cap is probably going to get tight starting next year. Not sure what we'll do about DRC and Maclin. There may be some harder decisions to be made after this year, and Jackson's/McCoy's/etc. cap numbers will be felt -- they are higher than what the Eagles have done in the past, and they will be felt. At some point we *will* have to make some harder decisions which will be unpopular in the dressing room, and how the team handles that (and how they manage the cap going forward) will really be the litmus test that they can get along without Banner.

What a small and totally unprofessional prick. He went 'All In' vs AR and lost. A mature adult walks away, keeping in house business to himself. But not Banner...the mealy mouthed fuck!

Turns out the petty little cocksucker is even more despicable than we thought. Would we now have a trophy or 2 in the chest if it weren't for his dollar obsessed tactics?

Good luck finding work or partners in the NFL you asshole!

Lots of posters on many of the Eagles' boards would not have paid Jackson. I think it's probably too big a deal myself.

I think it's a case of Andy thinking "what do I care? If I don't deliver, I'm gonna be fired anyway so I'd rather have a happy productive DJ in house and not worry about the ramifications 3 years from now."

            I can't say I blame him.

God knows that I hate to defend Joe Banner, but in all fairness his job was to manage the cap. If his money decisions were given higher priority than Reid's football decisions then that mistake falls entirely on Lurie. I can blame Banner for a lot of stuff, and I agree with tino that it's completely unprofessional and small of him to bring this stuff up now. But the fact that he was doing his job and managed to get Lurie to agree with him isn't his fault. The fact that Lurie placed more importance on managing the cap over listening to the football minds is a mistake that likely cost this city a championship or two. It's Lurie's fault for getting his priorities backwards, not Banner's fault for getting the boss to see his side of the argument.

I commented the other day about Desean's remarks. I just knew there was more to all of this. Andy is using this as a means to rally and unify his troops. Know what? It might just work.

If these moves mean that players like Vick and Desean are focused and 100% all in due to loyalty to AR, fine. If this is how it went down, Desean better show a hell of a lot of loyalty to AR and never ever go less than 100% on any plays for AR.

Get it done eagles. get it done.

That's what I am saying. This might just be a truly united and motivated team. After last season's clear lack of focus, that would be a blessing. It's time for something special.........

As July is around the corner and I'm starting to get that football feeling again, I'm starting to get that optimistic "this could be our year!" feeling that we all get cause we're (dumb) fans. I'm so glad the weasel is gone. I'm glad it's put up or shut up time for Andy. I'm excited that our two best offensive weapons are signed for the long haul and should be happy and productive.

But you know what looms over every optimistic thought I have about this season?
