Report: Geno Smith fires agent after draft fall

Four days after Geno Smith slid out of the first round of the draft, the former West Virginia quarterback fired his agents due to his displeasure over his draft position, Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reports citing sources.

The Daily News has learned that Smith thought that he would and should be the No. 1 overall pick in the draft. Sources told the News that Smith’s agents from Select Sports Group gave him no assurance of his draft position.

The Jets drafted Smith, who was atop Gang Green’s quarterback rankings, with the eighth pick in the second round (39th overall), which didn’t sit well with him. Smith can’t hire another agent for five days.

Despite Smith’s draft position, new general manager John Idzik made it clear that he still believes the rookie will be under the microscope.

“If you’re a first-round quarterback—first-round any position – the spotlight is a little bit brighter,” Idzik said on ESPN radio’s Mike & Mike show on Tuesday morning. “Him coming in as a second rounder, perhaps it’s a little dim, but being that he’s in the New York market, he’s at a high profile position, I think he’s going to be center stage regardless.”
    "Hey Giants, who's your Daddy?"

When being interviewed before the draft, he mouthed all the tired platitudes that prominent athletes think will make the public see them as humble, good guys. But watching him while selection after selection took place without his name being called, it was clear he was not taking it well and was really pissed. It was like revisiting the awkward Brady Quinn draft meltdown only worse... minus the ugly chick.

If this asshole actually thought he was going to be the #1 pick, his grasp of reality is seriously impaired. I just wish the Jets had kept Tebow around competing for the job this summer for even more laughs.

Is that why he went back for the 2nd round? He thought Andy Reid was gonna demand a mulligan? "But last time he had a pick that high, he picked a mobile QB like me!! "
Sorry, Geno, but someone as dimwitted as you appear has no business playing QB in the NFL.

I love watching the circus that is the NY Jets.

The media is going to eat this kid alive.

We're looking for people that are fundamentally different,” vice president of player personnel Andy Weidl said Saturday night. “The love and passion for football, it's non-negotiable. They're caring, their character, they do the right thing persistently, and they have a relentless playing style that you can see on tape. The motor, it burns hot. You see them finishing plays. They have a team-first mentality. They're selfless individuals.

hmm, he was on NFL Radio today and they asked him why he fired his agent. He said it had nothing to do with being at the draft or dropping to the second round and that alot of things with the relationship just were not going all that well. He didn't want to get into details because he didn't think that would be productive.

He said he was a little dissapointed with how far he fell, but was happy to have a team and said he is motivated to prove himself on the field

he sounded sincere, but maybe he is full of it?

then again, maybe the NY Daily News is full of it?

or more likely, they are both probably full of it

                        Concur.
I couldn't believe all the people who were such BIG Geno fans before the draft. I didn't see it then and don't see it now. Well, I'm sure they have all jumped ship now and will claim they never liked him.
Wait until next year is a terrible philosophy
                        Hope is not a strategy

Eagles should have took him. This just lets me know there is zero reason to watch the Eagles this season.

It could have been as much about the decision to not attend the Senior Bowl as much as anything else. That was probably a bad decision and must have come from the agents.
