Giants blasted for David Tyree hire

The Human Rights Campaign blasted the New York Giants' hiring of David Tyree on Tuesday for his past comments in which he expressed anti-gay views, Mike Mazzeo of ESPN New York reports.

Tyree, who was hired as the team's director of player development, said in 2011 that he would trade in his famous Super Bowl helmet catch if it would stop homosexuals from being married.

That same year, Tyree also put out a series of tweets saying, "there is no scientific evidence to support the claim of being born gay" and that he has met "former homosexuals."

According to the statement from the Human Rights Campaign, Tyree's claim "has been debunked and condemned by every major medical and mental health organization in the country, including the American Medical Association, the American Psychiatric Association, American Psychological Association, and many others."

"When did Tyree decide to be straight?" HRC president Chad Griffin asked in the statement. "The idea that someone can change their sexual orientation or gender identity is ludicrous, and the New York Giants are risking their credibility by hiring someone who publicly advocates this junk science. His opposition to basic legal equality aside, David Tyree's proselytizing of such dangerous practices goes against the positive work the Giants organization has done in recent years."

The Giants said in a statement Tuesday evening that Tyree "was expressing his personal view, and that is not the view of the Giants organization."

Tyree declined to comment on the Human Rights Campaign's statement when contacted by ESPNNewYork.com.

"I don't have any comment about it. I'm just excited to be with the Giants," Tyree said via telephone.

On Wednesday, Giants general manager Jerry Reese refused to respond to the criticism of Tyree's hiring.

"We do our due diligence on everybody we try to hire around here. No. 1, he was qualified for the job, and we think he's a terrific fit for us. We're happy to have him on board," he said.
    "Hey Giants, who's your Daddy?"

He's a silly knucklehead. You don't need to keep gays from marrying. Who cares? They can't procreate, isn't that enough? Let them have all of the joys, AND headaches of being married, LOL! Just make sure that they have all of he same legal parameters as hetero's do. (Taxes, obligations, etc)

If you want to fix something, stop creating a society where people benefit (financially) by having children outside of matrimony.

He has a right to feel any way he wants--- if the Giants don't like the job he is doing they can fire him---- not the 3%.

Poll after poll taken of the American public now shows growing support for gay marriage, so the 3 percent number is more than a little off.
Don't kid yourself Jimmy. If a cow ever got the chance, he'd kill you and everyone you cared about!

Let'em get married. I just don't want to hear about it every time I turn on the news.

                  Respectfully disagree.

The 3% is the driving force that makes this even an issue. From there it's nothing more than political correctness.

And it should have nothing to do with a mans job, or his ability to do it------------UNTIL he does something wrong. And even after that he HAS a right to his opinion unless he breaks the law or his employer feels he isn't,t doing his job.

It's the same kind of discrimination the LGBC community COMPLAINS about, but it's now ok ?

Not my business anymore but I would think this thread now needs to be moved.

The key is that it is his opinion. If he had a million bucks he can spend it telling his story and those who don't like his story can spend a million the other way. As long as he acts within the laws of discrimination the Giants have every right to hire him. And if he discriminates against someone they have every right to fire him.
Everyone has a right to their opinion but they don't have the right to discriminate at will.
Wait until next year is a terrible philosophy
                      Hope is not a strategy

I'll take the Kinky Friedman approach: 'I believe in gay marriages. i believe they have the right to be as miserable as the rest of us".

Meanwhile, sports leagues are showing a tendency that on "really bad things to do" scale that:

Offensive words > Physically hurting yourself or animals > Physically hurting other human beings

There's something not quite right about that significance of offense order.

It's not that hard to understand when you look at it like this:

                            Priority List.
                            1. Revenue
                            2. Profit
                            3. More revenue
                            4-98. more profit
                            99. Everything else (*except when lawsuits happen, then moves higher.)
