NFL Salary Cap Space: Philadelphia Eagles have 4th most room heading into 2014 NFL season

    By Brandon Lee Gowton  @BrandonGowton on Sep 1 2014, 3:55p 28
The Philadelphia Eagles roster is relatively set at this point. Both the 53-man active roster and 10-man practice squad have been finalized. The Eagles may still make a minor transaction here or there but there's no reason to believe they'll be incredibly active. So with the Eagles likely done making moves, let's take a look at their salary cap situation heading into the 2014 NFL regular season.

According to Over the Cap, the Eagles own $$16,841,729 in cap space, which is good for the 4th highest total in the NFL. Only the Jacksonville Jaguars, Cleveland Browns, and New York Jets have more to spend. Unlike the Eagles, none of those teams finished with a winning record in 2013.

As far as dead money goes, the Eagles rank near the middle of the pack (17th) with $9,706,074. Had not the Eagles released DeSean Jackson ($6 million), Philadelphia would have ranked as the team with the third least dead money on the books.

Around the NFC East, the Dallas Cowboys rank 19th with $4,346,106. The New York Giants rank 22nd with $2,856,365. Washington has the second least cap space in the NFL with only $257,515.

The Eagles won't really be needing this space for the upcoming season because their roster is already set. It does give them more than enough room to sign players in case of emergency, however. What the Eagles' cap space will be used for is when they roll it over to the 2015 offseason so that they can extend some of their young, talented players (namely Nick Foles) and have enough left over to make some additions in free agency.

Wise management. They are in a good position.
