Roddy White Takes Jab At Eagles Cornerbacks

“We know they’re not tough at the line of scrimmage.”

By Tim McManus | September 18, 2015 at 10:42 am

Roddy White took a swipe at the Eagles cornerbacks when discussing Atlanta’s upcoming matchup with the Giants.

“This is a different week, this is a different team,” said White, via ESPN. “To me, they’ve got better corners than the guys we played last week. So, it will be different.

"They're good players and they can run. [Dominique] Rodgers-Cromartie has been in the league a long time. He understands stuff. Prince [Amukamara] is kind of following behind him. They're going to try and put their hands on you and try to disrupt timings of routes. To me, they're just a better bunch than the guys we just played. So, we'll have to be on our A game."

Jones said the Eagles DBs wanted to disrupt the timing as well with their press coverage "but we didn't give them the opportunity to do that. We know they're not tough at the line of scrimmage. They're not put-your-hands-on-you guys. They just kind of want to shadow you and run with you."

That will likely not sit well with defensive backs coach Cory Undlin, who has spent the offseason trying to refine the corners' press technique.

"He wants us to be stout at the line and get physical at the line and not give them that space to move around and run," said Nolan Carroll.

The secondary yielded 298 yards, a pair of touchdowns and five pass plays of 20-plus yards in their Monday night loss to the Falcons. Big free-agent acquisition Byron Maxwell yielded nine catches for 154 yards (17.1 average), including a key 44-yarder from Matt Ryan to Julio Jones in the second half.

I think Bobby Taylor would have agreed with Roddys comments, based on his radio appearance yesterday. Taylor and Vincent could play physical at the LOS. I think they would have been ideal corners to suit Chip...........just need to find their clones, LOL!

Here is my problem..........we brought in, paid big and spent the summer training these corners we now have. If we were looking to play a scheme that required good press coverages, then somebody whiffed. And I can't 100% put that on Davis. I can blame him for not adjusting, but who did the talent evaluations and decided these were the right pieces for what we want to do? I am not even going to get into Eric Rowe.

I'm looking at you right now, Chip.

Fortunately, our secondary should have a much easier assignment this week. Thank goodness Dez is out.

Not sure he said anything remotely wrong or that most of us haven't been saying.

I hope our guys read it and react accordingly to being called soft.

              That certainly helps but...

Terrence Williams has developed into a solid #2. I really hate thinking this but I believe he could be the #1 on the Eagles if we assume Mathews is the slot receiver. Beasley is a quick, elusive little shit and while Whitten is getting long in the tooth, he's still a smart, very experienced TE whom Romo can find in his sleep.

But maybe the worst aspect of our very average CBs is the almost total lack of pressure the D Line puts on the QB.

John Fox got fired along with the entire staff, if they were good or not. I don't think that matters.

I would like to know who was responsible for the defensive strategy. Atlanta was in max protect and we still couldn't figure out to double Jones? I don't think Undlin had anything to do with not blitzing and thus giving Ryan all day long to throw though. Feels like that is on Davis.

                    Maybe they both suck.
