  • Eagles vs Bengals observations

    Complete team win.

    1. Hurts was really good today. He was decisive and some of his throws were wow throws. That td throw to Smith was perfect.

2, Time to give Fangio some credit as I have been a big critic of his. Since the bye week this defense has looked different. They are stopping the run, the coverage has been tighter (although there were some free runners today but mostly off his famous soft zone concept). If he can continue to get this defense going in this direction this team can make a run at winning the division.

    3. Dean was all over the field today as was Baun. They both are really starting to play well and play off the defensive line.

    4. Speaking of the defensive line, Nolan Smith is a pass rusher, not a guy who covers the other teams number 1 wide out not only number 1 but one of the best in the NFL. Nolan Smith is starting to come into his own. 3 sacks in 3 weeks.

    5. Carter and Davis both were excellent today. Carter had a couple of hurries but they both really bottled up the Bengals run games.

    6. Shout out to the Eagles CBs all of them. From Mitchel, to Dejean, to Slay, to Rodgers when he is in there. All of them playing at a high level. I didn't mention Maddox because he always seems to be on the other end of tight coverage but giving up the pass.

    7. Turnovers, the Eagles actually got two of them today. Imagine that.

    8. I thought Kellen Moore called a really good game today. He took what the Bengals were giving him, gave the extra protection when needed. The Bengals have a really good front seven.

    9. Eagles need to clean up the offensive line penalties. I thought the holding call on Steen was BS. But the pile on warranted, holding call on Shipley TD, false starts etc. Just need to clean that up.

    10. Jake Elliot is just so automatic.

We are 5-2 and playing much better football. Things are starting to point up. Winning in Cincy has not been easy for the Eagles since they never have done it.

Pretty much agree on all points. The holding call on the Shipley almost-TD was Nick Gates, who likely won't be playing a whole lot (and was completely legitimate call; the defender likely makes the play on Shipley or slows him up at least).

The defense has been showing it can defend the first read way better than the past couple of coordinators. That was a much harder test today. Getting off the field on third down should be better, but Burrow is good and they consistently made him make heroic plays to keep drives alive, and he could not all game.

The offense looked a lot better today. We probably need to have more running backs take some of the load if we are going run-heavy -- maybe Shipley can start stepping up. But Hurts seemed comfortable on the throws he did make, so maybe expanding that slowly can work. They got DeVonta going again this game, which was great to see. No sacks given up -- keeping TJ Hendrickson out of the way with two OL starters down is impressive.

Hurts had more time in pocket today than he has in a longgggg time. That was a key.
Nice to see Elliott being used again. Seemed that Sirianni forgot he was on the team.
They used the push at the goal line too early one time IMO. The one where Hurts got the ball up and over. They used it on second down and I think they could use Barkley there. He is a big strong back. If he doesn’t get it you still have two cracks
      with the push.
All the D played well. Fangio deserves credit. Maybe he realized he wasn’t using his guys well or maybe he was told he could use them better or maybe they didn’t like the heat they were getting for shitting the bed but today they played to their talent level.
Man Mitchell and DeJean are going to be a good pair as is Rodgers and maybe even Ringo. Reminds me of the Lito Sheldon Michael Lewis crew.
CJG got the Int today but I don’t think he has had
much impact on the field this year. Blakenship has been far more effective.
Devonta is just so good. Amazing that he is our number two.

Wait until next year is a terrible philosophy
      Hope is not a strategy
      RIP

Rewatched a little bit of the game. Man that throw to AJ Brown on the 3rd and 16 was money. Brown had a really good game to. Calceterra has some really nice catch and runs to

Hurts had no incompletions after the second drive ended in a punt. 13 straight completions after that.

Stoll is too valuable as a blocker to bring another TE.

Fred Johnson better have gotten a game ball.

saquon running over that guy at the end was a huge bully move. Barkley could be the mvp of the league.

dallas better hurry up and get back or he is gonna lose his spot.

the designed QB runs were excellent.

i do think it’s possible that since the starters didn’t play much in the preseason the team is getting more comfortable with both schemes and Moore and Fangio are learning what works.

this secondary when healthy and getting a pass rush is very good.

it looks like Carter gets held 8-10 times a game

Skay stuck his head on on a run play. That Rodgers coverage tho was great!!
You know Darren if you'd have told me 10 years ago that someday I was going to solve the world's energy problems I'd have said your crazy.... now lets drop this big ball of oil out the window.

Didn't we win the turnover battle for the first time in like 13 or 14 games ? Made a big difference.

Until this season, I never knew Saquon was such a beast in the open field. You know that players must hate having to tackle him when he has speed going. I am used to seeing Barkley trapped behind the LOS often with the Giants before he can get going.

2 solid, if not dominating, games in a row after going so long without any. I forgot what it feels like. A lot of people thought the Giant game was a fluke. More people will take notice this week.

Even when Cincy was moving the ball early, it was because of Burrow making plays and not defensive breakdowns.

                Keep it going boys !

First turnover battle win in a long time. That quickly turned the tight game into a blowout at the end -- the 4th down stop was effectively a turnover and a massive play. This was very encouraging -- defense continued to look good, though Burrow found answers on 3rd down a lot... he is good. But they adjusted and did better in the second half. The offense's best game since the opener and probably better than that.

Barkley is indeed amazing. He is a beast in the open field, but he's also amazing in short yardage -- plays were most backs are tackled for a one yard gain he seems to consistently get 4-5.

It seems like we cleaned up the tackling. I can remember a couple that we missed, but for the most part we swarmed to the ball and brought them to the ground.
We're looking for people that are fundamentally different,” vice president of player personnel Andy Weidl said Saturday night. “The love and passion for football, it's non-negotiable. They're caring, their character, they do the right thing persistently, and they have a relentless playing style that you can see on tape. The motor, it burns hot. You see them finishing plays. The Barkley we are seeing is the Barkley from his Penn State days. One of the best backs I ever saw in college football. He is much faster than he appears, he is big at 230lbs and he will truck you. Battering him into the line, and a big offensive line too boot wares down the opponent to the point where he just is deadly in the second half of games. I thought Cincy did a pretty good job on him to. He still goes for over 100 yards and 5 ypc.

Cincy has a good front 7. They really do. Its just got man handled by the Eagles backup line yesterday, Hurts really was reading well. They didn't give up a sack. The Eagles ran 59 plays in that game. The way the game started out you would have thought the Bengals would run more. Nope they ran 57 plays.

The Eagles are a Barkley drop away from being 6-1. They are starting to really play as a team on both sides of the ball. Washington had to have a miracle to win yesterday. I think over the next 4 weeks the Eagles take over leadership of the division and don't look back. Fangio needs to stay aggressive on defense, Moore needs to stay dedicated to the run. Siranni needs to keep his pom poms close.

Dejean has really helped solidify the D!

only negative today and season to date is any of our throws at or behind the LOS. Is Hurts just blind on those? Is it the bad blocking by receivers? Are we somehow tipping our hand on those plays? None of them ever work and most are close to turnovers. Then, do we ever run a HB screen? And why not?

other than that, great calls by Moore and Vic!

The one call that I hated was the 3rd down call in the 2nd period at our own 47. Why not run the ball when the defense is set for a pass? The whole NFL passes and I don't understanding it.
