  • Two players I would bench for the start of the Giants game

Lets face it, the Eagles are 4-1 really could be 5-0 or 0-5 its been that type of season. They just are not playing the tough inspired football we have seen in the past. As Ray Rhodes used to say too many players doing the Pro Bowl Glide. We can rip the coaching staff all we want and there certainly is blame to go there. However we just are making way too many mistakes. At some point those mistakes should have consequences. They are averaging 8.6 penalties a game 10.6 ypp. (tied for 5th worst in the league). These penalties are stalling too many drives and hurting them too much on defense. So how do you clean it up. You can talk till your blue in the face but it keeps happening. So at some point benching's need to start to happen. A clear message needs to be sent. You commit dumb penalties, you don't give 100% on every play, you sit on the bench and watch your not as talented backup play.

So after this last game and the sequences two players who should start the game on the bench and it is to be known why to every player on the field.

    1. AJ Brown - Worst game I have seen the guy play. He is dis interested and making way too many mistakes. Not only did his reset of his feet on a motion play (which is a no no for a WR) cost them a first down and points, he also jogs too many routes. Not only that he knocked the ball out of Devonta hand on the hell marry which would have won the them. He is directly responsible for the loss in my opinion. His answers afterwards were terrible. You slowed down your route, you never stop, you keep going. That was a TD, He cost them points on shuffling his feet for the motion penalties and then he knocked the ball out of Devonta hands, how does he not know Devonta is in front of him?. He needs to get his head screwed on straight. Let John Metchie play a few series. BTW its not just Brown I see half assing routes, the Goedert at times and a few times I have seen Smith do it. Simply not acceptable.

    2. Zach Baun - This one is not as obvious but that penalty was 1a for the losing the game. Situational awareness. Very important. If the RB breaks loose of that tackle so be it, but he you can't spear him on the ground. I know a ton of people bitched about the call but it was the right one. Very bone headed play by Baun on a young defense that keeps making them. I know it was his first one and how great he is etc. But message needs to be sent. If Baun can get benched for stupid penalties so can I.

Now I know these two are "" captains and leaders on the team. That is the exact reason WHY they both should be benched. Execution and paying attention to detail matters in the NFL. This team has to be perfect to win games. Its obvious Rodger and his officiating goons have it out for the Eagles. They need to overcome biased officiating every week. The only way to do that is to play detailed football. They are not playing that right now.

The Casual fan will blame the coordinators and like I said some of that is true but when you are consistently leaving 14-21 points a week on the field because you are not paying attention to detail that is a huge problem.

There are other problems but the things you can control the detail is most important.

The Oline is not playing well but most of that is ability right now. Jurgens might be cooked. He is not the same since his injury and he is getting burnt all over the field. Dickerson is hurt and can't stay on the field. Mailaita is either hurt or lost strength because I have never seen him beat like he is getting beat. Lane is playing OK but is giving up too much pressure at times. Steen is probably their best lineman and he committed a penalty being too far down the field on that pass play. We all sing Stoutlands praises but at what point does he make changes. He is the run game coordinator on a team that can't run the ball and his oline is a shell of itself.

The Defensive line is not playing well either. Its not so much the sacks. Teams are dinking and dunking their way down the field on quick passes, you simply don't get sacks on those plays. Its the run game. They are getting gashed right up the middle too many times. I know that Carter is dealing with shoulder injuries but I think they are too light on the interior right now. Howie needs to bring in another DT that is bigger. He did it a few years back and it helped. They need to do it now.

There is a ton to clean up and its not something that will get cleaned up on a short week. Benching a few players should piss them off and get some fire back in them. The Giants have a better defensive line than Denver. They are getting fast pressure with just a front 4.
They most likely will beat the Eagles this week unless the Eagles clean it up. I expect home cooking officiating and a clear bias again this week so they need to overcome that as well as the other team.

Yea I don’t see Sirianni benching anyone yet. I do see those mistakes by captains being brought up prominently in front of the entire team. Being called out in front of your teammates not in public.

I wholeheartedly agree Sirianni needs to get a handle on this. Supposedly he is t a great play design and okay call kind but he is a guru at dealing with his players. Now is the time to show that.
Hurts. I’m just not sure about him. I’m it sure if he is at his best when he isn’t thinking but just reacting. Before the season I said I hope he proves his detractors wrong this year and shows he can command the pocket. Unfortunately I think he is proving his detractors right in that he isn’t in the class of Allen, Jackson, Mahommes, etc.
Cant discount that Payton went after Ringo and that Ringo was fair at best in his players
Finally I have to wonder if this problem where they okay one half of football is coaching and play calling. You can’t just be going up and down the field at will but then turn it off. It is like going into the prevent D when winning. You have to play your game all game. It sure seemed to me that okay calling changed in the second half.
Whatever the issues the media sharks are circling and players can hear it. Sirianni better do his magic or the sharks will get more vicious.
Wait until next year is a terrible philosophy
    Hope is not a strategy
    RIP

Taz... I don't think it's time for that man.

The AJ thing. He is playing hard. I have no clue what happened on the deep throw and that is 85% on him but still.

As for Baun, that was a RIDICULOUS penalty. The guy was not down and was struggling to get out of the grasp of Mukuba so Baun flies in and hits him. The ref in that situation has to have some awareness of the critical nature of that play and understand Baun is trying to keep the guy from getting a key first down. That should not have been a penalty.
You know Darren if you'd have told me 10 years ago that someday I was going to solve the world's energy problems I'd have said your crazy.... now lets drop this big ball of oil out the window.

Yea I have to think Baun was a penalty but players are taught to go in like that so the player doesn’t stretch for extra yards AND the guy was in fact trying to stretch for extra yards.

I think you need to rewatch partially the All 22 on Brown. He is not playing hard. He is jogging too many routes (as are some other receivers) He is giving up on too many plays. He is really hurting this team. His attention to detail is suspect at best. Not knowing that Smith was in front of him on the hell marry that you practice is criminal. Nah I think he needs an attitude adjustment and embarrassment if you will.

The Baun penalty was legit. It gets called more times than not especially this year. He hit the guy in the head while he was on the ground. Its the same thing we cried about with Luvu last year not called. It is getting called more times than not this year. Baun has to be a leader and has to know better in that situation. That one really pissed me off.

Every number one receiver in the NFL takes plays off. There is no way a #1 wide receiver can sprint 80 times a game at 100% full speed. These guys know when they're supposed to go all out or when they can throttle it down a little bit. And you think it's criminal when Hail Mary passes are incomplete, or it's actually somebody's fault??? There's only a handful of them completed every season in those messes. Tough crowd

Baun said he didn’t think the runner was down and they are taught to clean up if the ball carrier is still going. IMO he plays smart, busts his ass and is one of their most respected players. Sorry , but you talk to the man, you ask what his thought process is and if that is his answer , you move on. You don’t discipline a guy for effort. As for Brown , I don’t have all 22, so I don’t see his effort on every play. No one plays 95-100% of the snaps and gives max effort on every play. As for the HAIL MARY , the 230 lb , strong hands guy is the one guy you want fighting for the ball and if you think he knows anything about whose hands he’s in competition with , you don’t even qualify as a casual fan. Bottom line is we are 4-1 in a stretch of tough games that no one thought the reigning world champs would get through with a record better than 3-2. We have outstanding coaches and players. It took 5 weeks to get things figured out last year. We have worse health and as many new moving parts on the roster. If we lay on egg the next 3 weeks, I will be concerned for the team. I’m sure everyone on the roster/staff is doing everything they can to figure things out. Benching 2 of your best players is not fixing a thing, that’s being reactionary and Nick is anything but a reactionary coach. Get through the quick turnaround and heal for the next 10 days. I really think we are banged up and still figuring things out.

I That play is unfortunately just part of the game. Bond was hustling and trying to stop The runner but got there just a little late and caught him in the head. He didn't hit him with his helmet and he didn't spear him. He just came running in with his usual great hustle and got there a 10th of a second late. So naturally any great coach would drag him out in front of the team and rip his ass for that. Us Casual fans just don't get it.

As I said in the post you quoted players are taught to do that so I don’t have a problem with it. But it is a penalty and he just happened to get caught with a flag.

Benching Brown or Baun is simply a very bad idea. Those issues are things that need to be addressed in film study, in house. You don't make an example out of two of your best players after a frustrating loss, on a short week, before a division game. This isn't high school.

Receivers are definitely jogging on routes where they are not the targeted guy. Something is definitely off there.

AJ definitely did have a bunch of mistakes that game. The Hail Mary, everyone is looking up at the ball and may not know who's there. Smith came over in front at the end; if he didn't go for it too Brown probably makes that catch. AJ likely was seeing that come right to him for quite a while before the crowd arrived. He was trying too unfortunately Smith and AJ kinda cancelled each other out when either might have made it.

The long ball... kinda looked like AJ was expecting it to arrive earlier, and did not see it in time to speed up again. That didn't necessarily look like laziness but it was a huge play. He may not have needed to slow down as much as he did to locate the ball.

There must be frustration among the players when the offense is not going well. The ruts of consecutive 3-and-outs are the worst. When they get a bit of a rhythm, they are good. It's just that has been about half the game recently.

Baun... just a mistake. I agree it was the right call, although he honestly had already committed to moving forward legitimately, as the guy was fighting for yardage. The problem was he delivered a forearm to the head and neck area as part of that, and I think that was avoidable. If he hits him but does not do that, I don't think the flag gets thrown. You can't bench a guy for one bad mistake -- they happen, and Baun is generally just awesome. DeJean's step-over was worse frankly.

There is definitely an issue on offense; they need to figure things out. Whether it's poor blocking or predictable plays or whatever, they can't keep doing the 3-and-out stuff on end. The defense has no chance to rest. The defense came up big enough in the Tampa game, but not the Denver one. They really need some blowouts to rest guys in 4th quarters. But we have a 4-1 record despite all of that, and had pretty comfortable leads late in all the wins aside from the Rams. They *can* do it in spurts; the thing is to figure out how to do that consistently. The re-adjustment to the other team making adjustments seems to have been an issue -- we can adjust, but not readjust. Some of this may simply take experience -- we had to know there would be growing pains with a new OC. The Denver game honestly looked much better on the predictable play front, so some progress may have been made. Just too many plays and drives got screwed by bad penalties.
