  • Did Joe Banner really say this?

    I saw this on PE.COM:

I think it was very telling when Joe Banner explained that the Eagles view their 4 skill position players (2 WRs, TE and RB) as a group and grade them out each year according to the group's performance and futher that they do not grade them individually. He said the 4 guys this year are Brown, Curtis, L.J. and Westbrook.

Did he really say this on WIP? If so - I think I have to stop watching this team. I don't listen to 610 and never will again. Did anyone hear this?

That would be retarded. Who wouldn't grade out each position/player individually?????????

I don't know but apparently people are saying he said this and Spadaro didn't refute it.

So. What does that mean to "grade them out"? So, then if they want to improve the "grade", they have to improve individual components that go into the grade, which is what they would do. I think you are presupposing that they are idiots with an IQ lower than dirt. I think you're making this into a story that isn't one. They probably "grade" the OL, DL, LB and DBs the same way when looking at where they are as an organization. That kind of broad-based overview may even make sense when judging where you are and what general areas you have to improve.

That makes no sense at all. What would grading them as a group tell you? that our offensive production is above average? Based on what having a top RB and below average WRs? What does that mean? I just can't wrap my head around any reason this would make sense. They obviously view every player individually in training camp but grading the skill positions as a group really makes no sense at all in any sort of evaluation process.

Agreed. Granted, we don't get to see coaches tapes, but you definitely have to look at the individual. If say, Reggie Brown shows up on the tapes as consistently beating his man and getting open, then you have a different opinion that you might simply looking at the group's production.

That's ridiculous if true. Hell - any group with Westbrook in it will grade out well.

Let me grade out the New England backfield with Tom Brady, my dead grand uncle and an ant. Well - that group grades out at an A+++!

This would make some logical sense!

Re: Did Joe Banner really say this?

This thread is kind of silly in my opinion. I'm really not sure what everyone is so baffled about.

I know you should never make any analogies to "real life", but don't most major corporations do the same thing? You break the organization down into "departments" and grade them by department? In other words, you look at the financials for that department, you look at staffing levels as a department, you look at production as a department. And then you can see the areas that need help or need improvement - and then you dig farther.

Look at it this way, if the "skill positions" grade out a "B", and the OL, DL, LB, DB all grade out a "D"...why look at improving the wide-receivers specifically just because they might be pulling the grade down. Obviously your biggest deficiencies are in other general areas.

But again, who cares? You guys are making something out of nothing.
