  • Reid: State of the Eagles

Part 1 of the series: http://www.philly.com/philly/blogs/d...k_Dawkins.html

Part 2 of the series: http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/..._TAKE_TWO.html

I think it is interesting he mentions Runyan in the OT discussions of Part 1...I thought there would be a better chance of Runyan returning than Thomas and he may be keeping that door open.

He says Andrews and Herremans bug him about being OT all the time since that is what they played in college and obviously is the higher profile position. Stacy Andrews also plays OG, could he be there when it all shakes out?

He admits Jackson needs to work on his run blocking

Comments on the personnel decisions and alot of other players

Insightful comments about McNabb and the benching...

Yeah, I read these a while ago. I have to say, I like Reid more and more. I certainly don't agree with all his decisions. Absolutley not! But when he is more candid, he is a pretty fair communicator. I know this is not a popular opinion, but I still feel like if Andy were more open and frank with the public, he would be much better accepted and appreciated.

Overall, I think we have been very fortunate to have him.

I think all of us would love for Reid to be more open & frank with the media, but the reality is that is extremely tough for someone of his stature especially here in Philadelphia with the way the media operates and his policy of protecting his players and keeping things in-house which many may not agree with, but that I think we know the players appreciate and helps the team.

You know Vote, I keep hearing that argument, but I gotta say, I don't think it holds water.

Who are two of the most popular coaches the Eagles have ever had? Buddy Ryan and Dick Vermeil. Outspoken emotional guys, not nearly as guarded as Reid, and they are revered to this day. Just being open is not going to make Reid hated or a greater target. Doesn't make sense to me.

Vermeil never threw this players under the bus and, while emotionally open, I do not think operated much differently than Reid with the media.

Ryan fed into the Eagle fans/media vision of a normal joe coaching their team, calling guys out and providing great quotes all the time. He was a blowhard who never won zippo here yet is given a pass because they "connected" with him.

I'll take the Vermeil/Reid model anytime over that buffoon. Plus Reid is not just the HC. He is the head of football operations for the Eagles and thus has to be much more cautious about what he discloses and how he treats players.

If people hold it against Reid and somehow slight him when he has achieved more than Vermeil and Ryan combined here, then I guess I'll never understand.

Players have said many times they appreciate Reid keeping things in-house and not throwing them under the bus. Players have also said they love playing for Reid for how he keeps things calm and balanced and keeps them focused on the next goal. That helps the team and has allowed it to be resilient and weather the many silly media/fan shitstorms that have erupted during this era.

I wish he could be more open, but have also seen scenes like in the locker room last season after winning the Giants playoff game when Reid is very passionate/emotional or when he cries with Trot during the meeting when he had to cut him etc. The players and coaches see that side of Reid, but he believes he needs to be under control in public as a professional. I understand and respect that. He will not change and does not care how many "enemies" he makes if people do not like it. The guy has enough to worry about than some part of the fanbase and media who get their panties in a bunch about something that has very little to do with winning or SB trophies which we and they all want.

Vote, I couldn't even get thru half you rpost, there is a disconnect here.

I am not speaking about wins and losses, or throwing players under the bus, I am talking about communicating with the public. DIdn't hurt THOSE coaches, and I don't think it would hurt Reid. That is all.

A majority of the players who have played for Reid speak very warmly of him after they leave. Hugh Douglas works on the morning show with two of the biggest Reid haters around (Rhea and Angelo) and they constantly try to bait him into trashing Andy; he nearly always takes the high road.

You're right I misunderstood. I thought you were arguing he should be more open and it would help him with that portion of the fans/media who slight him for it.

I do think calling players out would hurt him with his players and speaking off the cuff would be twisted by the media and mis-interpreted by some fans. Everything is dissected word by word anyway and some portion of the fans have already turned on him because they feel he has failed every year i.e. SB trophy or bust crowd.

Would some fans/media appreciate him being more open and give him room to actually do so without being manipulated? Probably...but that is not Reid's nature anyway and certainly is probably one of many things Lurie likes about Reid. Lurie may not like him speaking completely candidly about what goes on especially if it was on conflict with what the organization did or did not do. That is true for almost all businesses in communicating with the public and/or through the media.

I'd just like him to get away form the canned responses he is at this point, infamous for. He is so capable of communicating well. Personally, I like it on the rare occassion that he does, and I don't think it would hurt him. But that's just an opinon.
