  • The $5.2 million option on Michael Vick...

Peter King reported this piece of speculation about Vick today:
    • Interesting tidbit from respected St. Louis Post-Dispatch columnist Bernie Miklasz: "I would not be surprised, at all, to see the Rams make a play for Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick after the season.'' I agree.

Then King goes on to talk about McNabb, which I am less interested in right now.

But what about Vick? What if he continues to look dangerous? Will some team decide he's rehabilitated and worth the risk of a relatively high pick?

I think the real question is whether the Eagles will commit to the $5.2 million for Vick for next year without necessarily knowing for sure whether they can trade him for something of value. I don't think a team will surrender a choice pick if they think the Eagles will simply release him.

Eagles would have to decide that in the worst case, they simply keep Vick around for another year at $5.2 million. If it's an uncapped year, who cares, really? He's a weapon and you can always use weapons.

And it would be great to maybe get a first day pick for Vick in a year widely considered to be great for the draft.
Don't kid yourself Jimmy. If a cow ever got the chance, he'd kill you and everyone you cared about!

Nobody cares about his rehabilitation. They just care whether there's gonna be any protesters.

I don't see any way that Vick is here next year, by his choice. Vick's ego is growing and he is going to want to start.

If Vick plays like he did yesterday for the rest of the season, I definately think we can get a 1st day pick (maybe as high as a 3rd rounder) if there is a bidding war. JMHO.

I don't think there is any way they keep Vick next year. It felt to me like the option was there in case he played well enough, the Eagles may be able to get something back for him. Maybe it will be different because of the uncapped year, but no way do I see the Eagles paying the backup QB that much money.

As for if a team would trade for him... that is suddenly getting a lot more interesting. Before the last two games, heh, no way. But now, if his better play keeps up? $5.2 million is a low salary for a legitimate starting quarterback, and there may well be a team willing to give up a pick for that rather than getting into a bidding war after the Eagles release him, especially if it is an uncapped year.

Here's a question: Is Vick as good as Jay Cutler? (traded for Orton, 1st & 3rd pick)

Is he as good as Matt Cassel? (traded for Mike Vrabel and a 2nd round pick)

Based on his history he's better than either of them. My guess is a QB hungry team that's not in a total rebuilding mode (Panthers?, Jaguars? Denver?, Redskins?) or a rebuilding team that doesn't want to risk a high draft choice on a QB (Rams? Oakland?) would be willing to give a 1st or 2nd for a known commodity. Does Vick come with baggage? Sure. But he's a proven pro bowl caliber (though not traditional) QB.

I expect that the Eagles will end up with a top 10 pick for Vick plus players or picks.

          IMHO

You mention the Redskins....is there any chance that the Eagles would make a trade to help a division rival? I doubt that.

Man, that would be great. But, I think that Vick has too much baggage to warrant that high of a pick.

there is no way they will get higher than a 3rd to 4th round pick and here is why.

the entire league knows that mcnabb is the starter and next year vick would become a distraction because he would be getting paid $5 million bucks and at his age would want to play. so even though he is being a good citizen this year and probably would even still be a good citizen next year. deep down he would want to play and start.

the eagles don't want to risk any type of QB controversy with Vick which would no doubt arise the second McNabb throws 2 picks in a game.

Also, next year looks like it is going to be an uncapped year so a team that really wants vick can afford the 5 million bucks and wouldn't want to get in a bidding war for him but understands the eagles DO NOT want him truthfully.

so, they get him for the 5.2 million contract bonus and give up a mid round pick. this is all about the bonus not about the draft pick
You know Darren if you'd have told me 10 years ago that someday I was going to solve the world's energy problems I'd have said your crazy.... now lets drop this big ball of oil out the window.

I agree with you AW on the Vick likely being unhappy part if he's back in the same role as this season.

But, if the Eagles can be convinced that Vick would be happy to come back for one more season in this role for $5.2 million, I'd be inclined to roll the dice and force teams to pay with a higher pick for Vick because they believe he just might stay.

I can honestly see them fleecing Oakland for perhaps a pick and a player. Perhaps a swap of a 3rd pick and Seymour because they cant pay him. We will throw in Gaither or Jordan as well if necessary.
                    I miss Philly!

As good as Seymour is, he really doesn't fit here. The Eagles already have 2 pro bowl caliber DTs.

Plus, isn't Seymour a free agent next year?

If there's only one team interested you'd be right, but I think Vick will be a hot commodity next year. Look how many really bad QB's are out there on some decent teams.

Just my gut telling me, but I think they have to pay the 5.2 million in March and then try and trade him.

If the world thinks he will be released they will wait and only have to pay and not give up any talent or picks.

Absolutely. The issue isn't whether anyone will want Vick or whether the birds want to trade him. The issue is, as has been discussed many times, the timing. My understanding since his signing is that he birds have to pay early (I think Mar is correct) and if they don't pay he is free. So teams can easily wait out the birds. The only saving grace is whether a number of teams want to sign him. If there are a number someone may do a sign and trade deal in order to avoid fighting other teams for a free Vick.
Wait until next year is a terrible philosophy
                              Hope is not a strategy
