  • The McNabb to the Rams rumor

It might be false but the rumor of McNabb to the Rams for their second rounder (no. 33 overall) was floated around today.

The question to me becomes is that enough?

I say yes and here is why.

    1. The 33rd pick could end up being a guy that slides into the second round that shouldn't have. For instance, what if a guy like McClain from Bama slides which I heard he might be. Or a guy like Earl Thomas slides or maybe Iupati slides. You could get a heckuva player at 33 and you could team that player with the 24th pick.

    2. It frees up a TON of money to go after free agents. If McNabb was to be dealt, you would immediately have close to $10 million bucks I think to put with the Westy $7 million and go out and get some free agents. I know there is no cap but the Birds would get out from underneath those two contracts because even without the cap they still would have to pay them.

    3. Finally, it solves the Kolb question and we can put this all aside. The further we go with this thing the more controversy we are going to see. I want to know going into training camp who the starter is going to be and I don't want the "is this McNabb's last year crap."
You know Darren if you'd have told me 10 years ago that someday I was going to solve the world's energy problems I'd have said your crazy.... now lets drop this big ball of oil out the window.

I'm probably wrong as much as I am in minority, but I don't think Mcnabb goes anywhere. I think they would have to be blown away by an offer, I mean outstanding to part with him while this team is this stocked on O.

I think that within a week this Eagles team is going to be dramatically different.

First, they release Westbrook. I also think that there is a > 50% that McNabb is moved within a week (I don't think it will be the Rams though). Vick will stay until the Eagles get a good offer for him (later on). I don't think they need to rush Vick. But, I think they are ready to make Kolb the official starter.

I feel like this team is going to be very agresssive in free agency with 1 or 2 top notch targets being offered big money on March 5. Then, they will sign Weaver and Kolb to 3 or 4 year contracts each.

That is what I see in my crystal ball

I called in to NFL Sirius radio this morning and got on the air and here is what I said.

The Birds had issues on the defensive front, at LB, and in the secondary this season. They could conceivably address each position in free agency... they won't but they could.

          DE - Peppers, Kampman

LB - Dansby, Brackett, Ahmad Brooks

          S - Rolle, Sharper, Rhodes

The folks on NFL radio said they thought the Eagles were going to make a splash and get a big name free agent. He thought the Birds were starting the process of turning the page and the door was still wide open but they needed to sign a young stud and with releasing westy they have the money.

Anyway, I think they are going to get some guys both via the draft and free agency that are going to get our attention. Those losses were hard for everybody in the organization to watch. They don't want it to happen again next year so they are going to make some big time changes.

I'm with MD...thats not enough for McNabb and the Rams make little sense for a trading partner. McNabb will not sign long term there and that will negate alot of trade value. Eagles want at least a 1st rd pick, but the Rams have #1 and #33. The Eagles, like most teams, want nothing to do with the #1 pick and #33 is likely too far down to get the impact player they will looking for in exchange

The trade has to be to a team who can legitimately argue they are 1-2 players away from seriously contending, that QB is one of those players and that they want McNabb to be the solution for the next 3-4 year run...and they have to provide the Eagles with at least a 1st rd pick to start the conversation IMV

If the Eagles do choose to trade McNabb, the #33rd pick is pretty much what you can expect compensation-wise. I really don't think he's going to fetch more than a high 2nd on the trade market. This is part of why I think the Eagles will keep McNabb for one more year, then let him leave a free agent (or a franchise/trade move.) A monster trade offer just isn't going to come.

Sal Pal was on with Mike Mis yesterday and he said (apparently with a straight face!) that the Eagles could get a 2nd this year and 1st next year from the Rams for McNabb. His reasoning was that the Rams are making moves to get the fans back into the seats so that the team value increases allowing the owners to sell at a higher price. They already lowered the ticket prices for next year and announced lower concession and parking prices. The team needs a star to excite the fans and there's no QB in the draft that the FO likes enough generate the attention they need to fill seats quickly.

Sal's reasoning makes some sense but a 1st and 2nd? Really? I'd do that deal so fast I'd challenge Einstein's statement that man could never approach the speed of light! Sal's also forgetting that McNabb has to want to go there and sign a long term deal. I don't see him going into a rebuilding situation at this stage of his career. Of course the Rams could throw money at him (which often works) but I have to think that McNabb would simply wait a year and go to a team that will see him as a savior rather than just a building block. The difference between what a team like Minnesota or Chicago would pay him vs. what the Rams give him wouldn't be enough IMO to make him go to a bad team.

I think you can get a 2nd this year and a future 2011 pick but it would be a conditional pick and I'd be very surprised if the most it could be was a 2nd. For instance, x # of snaps = 2011 4th round, x # of games played = 3rd rounder & if they make the Super Bowl, then a 2011 2nd rounder.

                    I hate conditional picks.

For once I agree with VFK... well half agree. You know i'd trade mcnabb for a year long subscription to SI and maybe a fleece jacket and a football phone. But the Rams make no sense to me at all. Doesn't make sense from the Rams' or McNabb's pov.

If this does go through, Biggie called it about a month ago.

IMO they're actually calling about Kolb and the media just assumes it's McNabb.

How about the Rams 2nd plus the rights to OJ Atogwe to solidify the safety position? Done deal!

I would be all over that deal. You come away with one starter and hopefully a good pick. You free up some cap room to help fill a couple of other holes.

I would hate to see McNabb walk away next year for nothing.
