  • How Do The Owners Cry Poverty

in 2011 when the aggrement is done ? What footing do you have when you spend this money on old, average talent ? Thankfully I don't own a jersey or buy tickets.
We're looking for people that are fundamentally different,” vice president of player personnel Andy Weidl said Saturday night. “The love and passion for football, it's non-negotiable. They're caring, their character, they do the right thing persistently, and they have a relentless playing style that you can see on tape. The motor, it burns hot. You see them finishing plays. They have a team-first mentality. They're selfless individuals.

Its going to be tricky for sure especially when you add to what you wrote above that alot of teams are cutting/releasing even more salary than normal with no cap and may even focus more than usual on the draft...

I think FA is essentially finished with high $$ deals since there really is not the level of talent available that there usually is and the restrictions on the top 8 teams and the large RFA class etc.

Guys will still be signed and teams will still add talent, but I think you'll see more smaller shorter deals for this 2nd tier of FA/RFA than normal and a stretching out of the off-season cycle due to alot of players looking for jobs and not as many teams being willing to give them what they want...
Eliminate distractions, create energy, fear nothing, and attack everything.

There were not a whole lot of big time contract given out so I don't see much changing.

I agree with Vote when he says that FA is basically done this year as far as big signings go. For most teams it's off to the draft or they will get involved with some trades.

IMO and I know I could be wrong but I see a lockout coming before both sides reach an agreement.

I hate everything the Cowboys stand for. If you think they are America's team, then you support everything that is wrong with America. The excess, the greed, the lack of maturity, the lack of responsibility, the lack of control. - Luzinski's Gut

How can the owners possibly go for a lockout? If I'm not mistaken, they have to pay the guaranteed money on everyone's contract for that year. So someone like Peppers is gonna get paid for 2011 whether or not we have a season to watch.

        Which is awesome for peppers.

Depends on the wording in the contracts.

I agree with MD that it depends on the wording.

But IMO the players are going to negotiate hard and the owners are not going to take that well at all. Sort of like what happened in the NHL. Eventually they reach an impasse and the owners just lockout. maybe I am being a little paranoid but I just don't see this ending well.

To add one more thing the owners themselves are not on the same page. The bigger market teams don't want to support the smaller market teams anymore.

Could you imagine what it would be like if football became like baseball CBA wise?

Maybe this year's contracts (so Peppers bad example) but I think i heard that the old contracts with guaranteed money are actually guaranteed -- e.g. Assante's contract.

Don't know, don't pretend to know.... but if a work stoppage happens... there just may very well be clauses that allow owners to skip payments.... like insurance companies have for "acts of God" or "acts of War".... work stoppage may be in the same category and therefore might have been part of all contracts.... don't know.

Well, could someone who actually does know clarify this for us?

No one is really going to know until they are close enough to a new CBA.

My guess is that like the NHL the NFL owners will ask for a period where they can release players without it counting against them. if so that is one way they will be able to dump any kind of albatross contract.

Nobody knows unless they have read a standard NFL contract. I have no idea what provisions are in them pertaining to a work stoppage.

BTW--- just asking--- but what owners are crying poverty?

All I've heard so far is that they think the players get to big a slice of the pie.

If there is a work stoppage and this goes to some sort of arbitration they aren't going in screaming how rich they are and how wonderful everything is.How do you plead your case after handing almost 200 mil for a handful of midlevel talent.

That's in almost any labor situation.

Hell, baseball is even worse, they have to go and actually diss/trash their own players in order to win in arbitration. No different in any labor negotiations. Cept this time it's between billionaires and multimillionaires.
