Not really, they just didnt rise above their talent level. A more talented team would have been able to capitalize on that bracket seeding, but alas...
A couple more WC's and the young talent in the US may have developed to the point where we can realistically aim for the quarter or even semi-finals, but right now, we just have Donovan and Dempsey (if he's in the right position), and a pretty good goalkeeper in Howard. Edu may develop further, but that's basically it.
We also have NO striker, and you just dont get far without one.

FTD,
You summarize very well my thoughts on our team. We did better than could be expected given the dearth of elite players on the US, particularly at the essential position of forward/striker. I'm usually not a wild eyed 'flag waver' when it comes to international competition, but I was extremely proud of the grit and passion displayed by our guys. They overcame both some good teams and some atrocious officiating. But in the end, they simply didn't have the horses.
When you watch the really excellent squads (Brazil, Netherlands, Spain, Germany, Argentina), you get a sense of how far we have to go before winning the 'Cup' is anything more than a fantasy. But I believe we're moving in the right direction.
And we've made some converts. Eagle60 actually watched the match and stayed awake, musicman did not stick needles in his eyes, and Zepster has become a globe trotting futbol journalist who's reports from Johhanisberg were so riveting, ESPN has offered him a big money contract for the Brazill World Cup in 2014.
And keep this to yourself, but even MD is coming around. He was seen yesterday in a Bel Air, MD bookstore buying all their books on soccer. I have to believe it was just a coincidence that there was a big bonfire in his back yard last night.
And Jukin is now obviously on board. You know, for a smart guy it took him a while to figure out what The Beautiful Game is really all about!
We're looking for people that are fundamentally different,” vice president of player personnel Andy Weidl said Saturday night. “The love and passion for football, it's non-negotiable. They're caring, their character, they do the right thing persistently, and they have a relentless playing style that you can see on tape. The motor, it burns hot. You see them finishing plays. They have a team-first mentality. They're selfless individuals.

It's all good!
Yes I'm definitely on board ...with the babes of the world cup. I still hate soccer and didn't watch a single second of any game (except for the highlights during the news). But I'll continue to check out the chicks of the world crap..... I mean cup.
