The Latest And Breaking Eagles News

    Jackson Preaches Patience
Yes, DeSean Jackson's two biggest games of the 2010 season have come when Michael Vick started at quarterback.

But is it as simple as that? Those were also the two games where the Eagles faced a 4-3 defense. Against Detroit and Jacksonville, Jackson had nine catches for 288 yards and two touchdowns. In the three games vs. the 3-4, Jackson has nine catches for 73 yards and no touchdowns. Coincidence?

This Sunday, the Eagles take on the Falcons. Atlanta runs a 4-3 scheme and leads the NFL with 10 interceptions. Jackson said that the key to success is patience.

"The biggest thing about being a receiver and a big playmaker is it's not going to happen all the time. The more and more you do it, the more focused, the more attention people are going to have on you," Jackson said. "It's just something that I've learned to work with and going out there and being patient. I understand what teams are going to do. As long as we go out there and keep being patient and not trying to rush things, we'll be all right."

Jackson still leads the team with 361 receiving yards at an average of 20.1 yards per reception. He is tied for second on the team with 18 receptions and the two receiving scores. Last week against the 49ers, the Eagles tried a variety of ways to get him the ball. Jackson took a direct snap in the Wildcat. He was fed the ball on a bubble screen. Kolb hit him for a 20-yard gain right down the middle of the field.

In the meantime, Jeremy Maclin has benefited from the attention Jackson receives. And running back LeSean McCoy certainly enjoys that teams have consistently used two deep safeties instead of one in the box.

"It's always good to see your teammates doing good things," Jackson said. "It's not always going to be the same person doing the same things. As long as you have guys that are willing to step up and they can step up and help you out and take pressure off of you, that's always a good thing."

Desean is saying the right things, but I am sure he's a bit frustrated. He wants to be the go-to guy, and he's used to that.

Regardless, I hope that Reid and Co also understand what Desean is doing for the team even if his numbers don't represent his full value....when it comes time to talk about a new contract......

you know they're gonna use the numbers against him, which is why DJ is so frustrated.

I've always felt he needed to get paid. Someone will pay him, if not us.

Jackson just won't do as well with Kolb as with Vick, IMO. It's just that simple.

First, Kolb likes to throw to the middle of the field, which is why he loves Celek so much. Jackson would get killed in the middle of the field.

Second, he just doesn't have the arm strength to connect with Jackson down the field. I can't even hold that against him. The QBs with the cannon arms, McNabb and Vick, have talked about how hard it is to get it out there to Jackson. He's just too damn fast.

The irony of the whole Kolb-Vick thing is this: sure, Kolb is probably the better fit in a traditional WCO offense. But the talent the Eagles have on offense at WR is not in synch with the WCO, with the short throws in the middle of the field. Vick is better suited to the strengths of this offense, the quick strike capability and the down the field stuff.

Kolb really can't deliver down the field that well. Look at that one deep throw he made to Maclin against SF. That was badly underthrown and Maclin had to come back for it.

Also, Vick could/would buy the time needed for Desean to get away from the jam/press coverage and will EVWENTUALLY elude whoever is covering him. Kolb gives Desean the first look...he's getting jammed...then looks to his secondary targets and never gets back to looking at Desean later. Those big plays can take time, and you don't see them in the first 2 seconds.

LT - in order for DJ and Kolb to make great plays, they need to develop an incredible rapport and trust. Very precise routes and very anticipatory throws. Kinda like the telepathy that Manning had with Wayne or Harrison.

At this point, nobody is very optimistic of that happening.

              * Jackson has received great advice from someone. He's playing the 100% great soldier for 2010 and then once the labor dispute is addressed completely the Eagles will pay him a ton. He knows it. The Eagles know it. It will happen. But the downside is Jackson has to play 2010 with a low salary relative to his production and has to be a good soldier no matter what happens. Going back to California I'm positive Jackson was frustrated at SF with his output. But he's doing/saying all the right things. Great to see.

That's true, FRESH. The Eagles really like their passing routes that take a longer period of time to develop. Which seems odd to me and not in step with a true WCO.

This again? I don't care how often Andy and Marty say it, THE EAGLES ARE NOT A WEST COAST OFFENSE TEAM.
Whatcha Gonna Do Brother, When the Eagles run wild on you?

totally agree, just observing the fact that everybody SAYS they are a WCO and Big Red sometimes talks about running a WCO. And many fans of Kolb believe he is better suited to be the Eagle QB because he is better suited to running a classic WCO. Which of course, the Eagles aren't running.

Makes your head spin doesn't it? The Eagles run some bastardized hybrid between Holmgren's WCO and the BYU spread.

Call it what you want. To me, it's we're going to pass until my QB's arm falls off, and then pass some more. And did I mention pass? And to really screw up the defense, we're going to fake a run and then-pass!! That will fool'em.

                              * I am a supporter of Andy Reid's. Am I 100% happy with his choices? No. But you know what? You don't know what you have till its gone. He runs a world class organization as a coach. Why do you think players who leave say it over and over again? Does he make stupid mistakes? Sure. Does he win almost every year? Yes.

Andy Reid is a constant. Is he a good clock manager? No. Is he smart with a run/pass balance? No. Is he a winner and a great coach? Yes. I think so.
