  • Keep Kolb, Dangle Vick

People know I am not the biggest Vick supporter and am a bit skeptical of his long term value especially if we sign him to a long term deal...not so much that he will get caught doing something stupid again, although there is always that chance (leopards rarely change their spots), but more so because of his production as a QB and injuries...

Reid caught the league a little by surprise with the emergence of Vick this season, but by the end teams had figured out once again the limits of Vick's QB capabilities and the offense struggled in due course...

I know some will lay more of this at Reid's feet than Vick, but again the coach can only craft a David out of the finest materials and Vick has some flaws that no coach has been able to fix...and we are talking about one of the best QB developers in the league in Reid IMO...

I am going on record that I would franchise Vick, keep Kolb and then quietly put out feelers to the teams looking for a QB all this off-season to see if there is possibly a bigger market for Vick than Kolb...and if so, I would pull the trigger and cash Vick in now at his highest value

Concurrently, I would focus heavily on the OL and upgrade RG and RT, shifting Justice to backup, have Jackson/McGlynn battle it out for C (I think both are fine C), let MJG and Cole stay as backups or walk and between FA, trades and the draft find better depth and solutions for the right side of the OL.

The D obviously needs focus too, but that is another thread. I am leery of Vick and think Kolb probably is the better long term answer...

I understand where you are coming from, and similar thoughts have entered my head at times. I'd be a lot more willing to go down this road if I felt comfortable that Kolb could be a long term solution for us at QB. I'm not there. I see a guy that I think is going to get beat up, shell shocked, and has a questionable arm for taking advantage of our team weapons.

Perhpas if we brought Donovan back as insurance? (wouldn't that be a hoot!)

I would actually be OK with trading Vick if we got a top 5 pick and used it on Daquan Bowers or Patrick Peterson but I don't see that ever happening.
You know Darren if you'd have told me 10 years ago that someday I was going to solve the world's energy problems I'd have said your crazy.... now lets drop this big ball of oil out the window.

Even though I don't like Vick as a human being I don't see Kolb being nearly as effective behind center as Vick. That being said I'd agree with Fresh, we need a good long term solution before we drop Vick.He gives us a better chance to win now than Kolb does. But beyond that no one is going to give up a top 10 pick for Vick. they could have had him last year for a 3rd rounder and no one was interested. Even with his performance this season there were enough 'faults' shown to prevent us from getting what we'd want to replace him.

I don't see this happening but an interesting twist would be the benefit that Howard Mudd would bring to the offense with a quick drop & release type QB like Kolb.

I agree except I don't really care about his arm strength as long as the timing is down. If the timing is down he could hit DJ in stride and watch him go. But the Eagles will need to fix the line pronto if they are going with Kolb. Vick could barely escape it at times.

Sign a stiff, draft a bust. Not a very good plan there 12. I don't see Newton becoming much at the Pro level. I like the kid from Arkansas a lot better.

It all hinges on how good Kolb is. AR and Marty need to make an educated guess from what they've seen in practice, and what little we've seen from game action.

If Kolb can be the man, I'd follow VFK's plan: franchise Vick, keep Kolb. As Blitz said, fix the OL as a top priority, and get the team to the timing offense that they (supposedly) planned on having with Kolb.

If not, trade Kolb, and use the trade to help fix the OL and/or our secondary. For chrissake, we even re-signed Derrick Burgess last year. Sign a free agent backup QB.

My biggest worry, personal dislike for Vick aside, is that we began to see a lot of the same problems with Vick that we saw with DMac -- he kept getting hit, he didn't get the ball out quickly, we had some problems in the red zone. I get the feeling that Vick is better suited for the same type of downfield passing game that we had with DMac, and not the timing dink-and-dunk offense that we were supposedly going to have with Kolb. But, he's going to end up on the IR if he stays back in the pocket as long as he has been (and, more to the point -- if none of the officials call roughing the passer). With DMac, it seemed like we'd respond to blitzes by dumping the ball off to Westbrook on screen passes. I'm not sure if we did that much with Shady or DJax this year.

Both QB's will benefit if we call more runs to Shady McCoy, but who knows if we will.

Both Kolb and Vick would benefit from a new right side of the OL. So, if we are able to shore up the RG and RT positions (and if there is a season!), I would like to see either of them traded, but preferably Kolb. While I believe that Kolb can be a fine NFL QB, I now think that Vick is better suited for the receiving corps that we have -- even though we have probably seen the best of Michael Vick.

Without question, Vick gives us the best chance to win NOW. If somebody offers a 1st or a high 2nd for Kolb IMO you gotta trade him now. Sign a Vet QB & leave Kafka as the #3.

How do they dangle Vick? He's a free agent.

I suppose you want to tag him, then trade him. I don't know what kind of value Michael Vick will have with a one-year franchise tag and no long-term deal. Especially if the tag goes away after they finish with the CBA.

I'm in favor of trading Kolb. Vick is better, I don't believe in Kolb, but his value is very high.

It would take him doing something like that to make me think we should fire Reid.
