      2011 Coaching Staff Complete

The 2011 coaching staff for the Eagles looks all but complete after the Eagles announced several additions and changes to the staff Tuesday.
Johnnie Lynn, a veteran coach in the secondary and former defensive coordinator for the New York Giants, has been hired as the secondary /cornerbacks coach. He will team with Mike Zordich in the secondary, who was promoted Monday to secondary/safeties coach.
Lynn joins the Eagles after a five-year stint in San Francisco, working as the 49ers secondary coach. In 2009 and 2010, Lynn also held the title of special assistant to the head coach. From 1997-2003, Lynn worked as an assistant coach with the NY Giants, including the 2002 and 2003 seasons as their defensive coordinator. Lynn also served as the secondary coach of the Baltimore Ravens (2004-05), the 49ers (1996), and Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1994-95). While with the Ravens in 2004, safety Ed Reed earned NFL Defensive player of the year honors. Lynn began his coaching career in a number of capacities at the University of Arizona from 1987-93. The 54-year-old Lynn was a 4th round draft pick of the New York Jets in 1979 from UCLA and played seven seasons for the Jets, recording 17 interceptions in 97 career games.
Also on the defensive side of the ball, Bobby April Jr. has been named the defensive quality control coach, a position filled last season by Zordich. April, the son of Eagles special teams coordinator Bobby April, spent the 2010 season as the special teams coordinator and safeties coach at Nicholls State. From 2007-09, the 28-year-old April worked at Portland State as the special teams coordinator and inside linebackers coach. April served as a graduate assistant coach at Tulane from 2005-06. A native of Mandeville, LA, April graduated with his bachelor's degree in 2005 from Louisiana-Lafayette.
On offense, David Culley has been promoted to senior offensive assistant/wide receivers coach and will continue to play a large part in the offensive gameplan. Culley's position group has been among the league's best in recent years as they feature the young starting duo of DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin. Jackson followed up a record-setting rookie campaign in 2008 with two Pro Bowl campaigns in 2009 and 2010. Maclin, meanwhile, caught more passes (126) in his first two seasons as an Eagle than any other player besides TE Keith Jackson (144).
James Urban, the quarterbacks coach since 2009, has been promoted to assistant offensive coordinator. It is the next step for Urban, who will play a larger role with the rest of the offensive positions. Replacing Urban as quarterbacks coach is Doug Pederson, who had been the offensive quality control coach.
Finally, Duce Staley has been named special teams quality control coach, a role previously filled by Jeff Nixon. In addition to helping out April with all aspects of special teams, Staley will also continue to play a large role with the running backs.

Glad to see Duce getting his chance, I remember watching him last year at camp working with the backs. He seems to really have the patience as a teacher.

          Lynn is a decent hire.

If April Jr is as good as his father has been over the years it could turn out to be a good hire.

Have to say I am still scratching my head at Castillo though.

              Hey, I posted it first!

This makes me feel better. Guess Andy felt the need to add some more experience to the defensive group as well? Weclome aboard, Coach Lynn.

Oh, and good for Duce. By all reports he was very helpful with the backs this last season, and I am glad to know he'll be staying around.

Lots O Changes....do not know much about Lynn, but seems to have a good rep. I agree its nice to see Duce & Pederson get elevated and interesting that Culley and Urban are going to become bigger parts of the offensive gameplanning...

Here's a good summary of these moves...

                    http://www.bleedinggreennation.com/2...oves#storyjump

The Eagles finalized their coaching staff today with a flurry of hirings and promotions. I only had a chance to mention it quickly earlier, so I just wanted to go over who all these guys are and how they got where they are. First, the new guys.

Johnnie Lynn, Secondary/cornerbacks coach - Spent the last 5 seasons as a secondary coach for the 49ers, prior to that he was the secondary coach for the Ravens, he also spent 6 years with the Giants, two of which were as defensive coordinator. He's also coached secondaries in Tampa Bay, an earlier stint with San Fran, and at the University of Arizona. He played seven seasons for the New York Jets. He'll work alongside Mike Zordich coaching the secondary.

Bobby April Jr, Defensive quality control coach - His name should give away the main reason he got the job... He's the son of current Eagles special teams coordinator Bobby April. That said, Jr seems perfectly qualified for the quality control job, which is certainly the most thankless of all coaching jobs. These guys really do the grunt work for the decision makers. They are there to learn. Jr has spent the last 5 years coaching in the college ranks as a special teams coordinator, safeties coach and linebackers coach.

Now, the guys that got promotions

David Culley, senior offensive assistant/wide receivers - Culley has been the Eagles WR coach since Andy Reid got there. I'm not exactly sure what if any new responsibilities come with the "senior offensive assistant" title that's been added to his name. He's already been involved in crafting gameplans for years. Back when the Eagles WRs were really bad, Culley got a lot of criticism from Eagles fans looking for someone to blame for the lack of production... Then low and behold they draft Maclin & Jackson as opposed to Pinkston and Thrash and he looks pretty smart... Garbage in garbage out my friends.

James Urban, assistant offensive coordinator - Urban spent the last two seasons as Eagles QB coach and is the one guy on the staff that could be considered a rising star. I wouldn't be surprised if he got interviews for offensive coordinator jobs next year. He's slogged his way up through the coaching system with the Eagles the hard way starting as an assistant to Andy Reid, than a quality control coach, to finally position coach.

Doug Pederson, QB coach - You all know Doug Pederson, who Andy Reid brought with him from Green Bay in 1999 to basically get beaten up while Donovan McNabb spent the first part of his rookie year on the bench learning. In all, he had a 9 year NFL career. He's spent the last couple years as an offensive quality control coach.

Duce Staley, special teams quality control coach - Former Eagles running back who is still #4 on the Eagles all time rushing list, spent last season as a coaching intern. Now he's officially been added to the staff as a special teams coach, but he'll also continue to work with the running backs as well.
