Will The Eagles Be Interested In Clinton Portis?

    by Jordan Ruby

Earlier this week, the Washington Redskins released Clinton Portis, and no one was particularly shocked. Portis has been injured for much of the last two years, and as a result, has seen his production drop dramatically. But Portis has always been a very talented back, and he will likely find a new home before next season (assuming there is one). Could that be in Philadelphia? Bill Barnwell of ESPN thinks he could be a good fit.
The solution? Turn Portis into a devastating part-time back. He's young enough to make a recovery -- he doesn't turn 30 until Sept. 1 -- and unlike backs that rely on breakaway speed in their youth and age poorly, Portis' mix of skills should sustain a second act for his career. He's an intelligent runner, makes sure cuts at the line of scrimmage and no back in the league is better in pass protection. A pass-happy team like the Philadelphia Eagles or New England Patriots could easily find a role where Portis could contribute.
In theory, Portis could be a good thunder back to LeSean McCoy's lightning. But in practice, I'm not quite sure that would work. Philly would provide Portis the opportunity to get a little bit healthier, give up some of his carries, and prolong his career. But there is no guarantee that he can be an effective back in the league anymore. We'll have to wait and see if the Eagles will actually have any interest. But if the price is right (and by "right", I mean basically nothing), it could be a risk worth taking.

    NO
We're looking for people that are fundamentally different,” vice president of player personnel Andy Weidl said Saturday night. “The love and passion for football, it's non-negotiable. They're caring, their character, they do the right thing persistently, and they have a relentless playing style that you can see on tape. The motor, it burns hot. You see them finishing plays. They have a team-first mentality. They're selfless individuals.

Portis will not come to Philly because he wants to be the featured back. In any case, his best days are behind him. Still, he probably still has a little tread left on him, and he would tear up the Redskins when he faced them. So, I wouldn't rule him out, but he is not coming here.

I don't want to see him in Philly and want to see what Harrison can do if he would devote himself to his role. But Portis would be a fit I think if they just want a bruiser who can come in twice a game.
Wait until next year is a terrible philosophy

Zero chance they go after Portis, unless he's still floating around by preseason.

The only thing that appeals to me about him is his blocking skills. With the line the way it is we need all the help we can get to protect Vick. But having said that he's too much of a headcase and isn't worth the effort. In a word, I'd say 'No!'.

Clinton Portis Says DC Media Was Worse On McNabb Than Philly

by JasonB on May 25, 2011 12:01 PM EDT

It is a certainly a familiar thing to hear for Eagles fans that the local media is too tough on Donovan McNabb. Like many things McNabb-related that we've dealt with, our pals in DC are now hearing the same things. Clinton Portis, in a recent interview says that the Washington media was at least in part responsible for how poor McNabb was year and that they were in fact, tougher on him than the Philly media.
"Anything that happened, I think that the Washington media was being so critical of the team," he said. "It was hard to really have that team bond because the media would shoot at picking it apart and tearing it apart and so critical even when the good times came. I don’t think Donovan was ready for that, even coming from Philly. I don’t think he understood the position he was coming into."
That's total nonsense by the way. I have a feeling a poor o-line, a coach with a poor system that didn't like him, lack of weapons etc played a bigger part in McNabb's struggles than the "scary" DC media... but whatever.

Portis also talked about where he might want to play next. He indicated a desire to stay within the NFC East and mentioned Michael Vick among those QBs he'd like to play with.
I just never played with a quarterback who had the opportunity to really run his system. For me, I would really love to play with a Drew Brees, a Phillip Rivers, Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Michael Vick, Aaron Rodgers, Roethlisberger. I want to play with a proven quarterback who would take a lot of the pressure off. I think in D. C. I was always the focal point and a lot of people blamed me for a lot of the things that was going on around me.
With all due respect to Portis, who was a really good back, I'll pass and I think the Eagles will as well.

Feeling rejuvenated, RB Portis believes he can make impact
                        NFL.com, Published: July 16, 2011

With Clinton Portis about to turn 30 and coming off two injury-riddled seasons, it'd be fair to conclude that the running back's best days are in the rearview mirror.

Don't tell Portis that. He'll be a free agent when the NFL lockout is lifted, and he's confident he has quality football ahead of him.

"I think (age is) just a number," Portis told WTEM-AM in Washington D.C. on Friday. "You're saying I turned 30 (he'll be 30 on Sept. 1), but I had a slate of two years where I really haven't done anything. So right now, I feel good and feel better at this point than I have in a long time, just feeling like I'm completely healthy, just feeling like things are totally healed. And now that I know what I need to do and what I need to get accomplished, I'm fine with that."

Portis enjoyed several elite seasons with the Denver Broncos, who drafted him in 2002, and the Washington Redskins, who acquired him in a 2004. But the NFL grind seems to have worn on Portis, with injuries limiting him to just 13 total games in 2009 and 2010.

And while durability concerns -- one of the reasons the Redskins released Portis in February -- now are part of the package, the two-time Pro Bowl running back looks at the missed time as a blessing in a way.

"The injuries the last two years has really been a lot of rest for myself," Portis said. "And with the lockout going on this year, I had the opportunity to go out to Arizona and fully recover and train and straighten out some of the things that were ailing me that I didn't even have a clue of."

Portis has an open mind about where he'd like to play next season, though years of losing in Washington have him itching to join a contender.

"Any team I can help. I think I have choices, but any team that I can help that's really a contender," said Portis, who boasts six 1,000-yard seasons. "I would love to go to ... I've always been a fan of Drew Brees, I've been a fan of Philip Rivers, I think the young kid down in Tampa (Josh Freeman) is going to be great. Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Michael Vick, it's a lot of guys.

"I just want to go to an organization that's kind of stable and going to have a set offense and running with what they're familiar with."
