Could Seattle be Kevin Kolb's landing spot?

    http://www.bleedinggreennation.com/2...s-landing-spot

Yesterday, JasonB wrote about Adam Schefter's report that "at least three teams" are talking about a deal for Eagles QB Kevin Kolb. With that can of worms now open, Pro Football Talk is speculating that Seattle could be one of those three teams. I had forgotten that the Seahawks had inquired about Kolb last year while the Eagles were trying to trade Donovan McNabb, so I'll give some credit to PFT for recalling that one. The Seahawks eventually traded the 40th overall pick in 2010 and a 3 in 2011 for Charlie Whitehurst and the 60th overall pick in 2010. Their interest in Kolb now depends on how much they like Whitehurst. I have the Seahawks as the 11th most likely team to trade for Kolb, and guessed that it should cost them their 1 (25th overall) and the 2nd pick in the 4th round:
    11) Seahawks - Matt Hasselbeck is an unrestricted free agent this offseason, although they recently gave up a nice chunk of change for Charlie Whitehurst. What should the Eagles get in return if a deal got done? The Seahawks' 1 (25th overall), and the 2nd pick in the 4th round (originally held by the Broncos).

Seattle could be best fit for a Kevin Kolb trade

    http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com...in-kolb-trade/

At least three teams are contemplating making a run at Kevin Kolb, with ESPN’s Adam Schefter hinting that at least one coming from the NFC West.

It would be a shocker if the Seahawks weren’t one of the interested teams.

As Eric Williams of the Tacoma News Tribune pointed out in a chat Tuesday, the Seahawks were very interested in acquiring Kolb last year. The Eagles didn’t want to move Kolb, so Seattle wound up settling for Charlie Whitehurst.

So just how interested were the Seahawks last year?

ESPN’s Sal Paolantonio reported at the time the Seahawks were calling “non-stop” about the Eagles quarterbacks, and CSNPhilly.com said the Seahawks were only interested in Kolb.

The more we think about it, the more that Seattle looks like the most logical fit for Kolb this offseason, if a CBA is reached before the draft.

    Three big reasons why:

    1. Kolb fits what the Seahawks want to do on offense.
Pete Carroll fired offensive coordinator Jeremy Bates and brought in Darrell Bevell in part because he wanted a more traditional West Coast offense based on short timing throws.

    That’s Kolb’s skill set in a nutshell.

    2. Their quarterback need is even greater than last year, when they wanted Kolb.
Williams believes the Seahawks will bring in two quarterbacks to compete with Whitehurst, which basically says Whitehurst is a fallback option and could get cut. And despite all the nice things the Seahawks have said about Matt Hasselbeck, they haven’t re-signed him and surely want to go younger at the position if possible.

There won’t be a ready-made starter at quarterback available at pick No. 25 in the first round. Williams hears the team isn’t that high on Jake Locker anyhow.

    3. Pete Caroll is not afraid to be bold.
Carroll and G.M. John Schneider have shown the willingness to do whatever is necessary in order to get the guy they want. In general, they have not been cautious since taking over in Seattle.
Being bold didn’t work when acquiring Whitehurst, but we’d expect them to try again with Kolb this year.

      Per RotoWorld...

The Tacoma News Tribune's Eric Williams expects the Seahawks to "make a run" at Kevin Kolb this offseason.

The Seahawks could dangle the No. 25 overall pick, assuming a CBA is done pre-draft and trades are allowed in late April. Williams says he "know(s)" Seattle had interest in Kolb last spring, and the 26-year-old quarterback's skill set fits their more West Coast-oriented offense under new OC Darrell Bevell.

Too bad the Seahawks had to make the playoffs by winning the season finale vs the Rams. Instead of being 6-10 and having a pick around #10 they went to 7-9 division winners with a playoff win and the #25 pick.

Too bad for them, perhaps good for the Eagles. I doubt they'd want to give up the #10 for Kolb, but maybe I'm wrong. I'd think them having the #25 pick makes them more likely to be players in the Kolb sweepstakes which is only going to help drive up the price.

Good point. I was thinking it would be nice to have one of the teams in the top 10 make us an offer we can't refuse.

I still find it crazy that winning one game can cost a team 15 spots in the draft.

I hear ya there spurr. Just as crazy as a 8-8 team hosting a play off game I guess. I don't see the burning need for them at QB anyway.

That 8-8 team beating the Saints was my 2nd favorite game of the entire year. (After the 4 TD in 7 minutes game vs. the Giants.)

More Speculation on Kevin Kolb to the Seahawks

On Tuesday, we wrote about Pro Football Talk's speculation that Seattle would make a lot of sense as Kevin Kolb's eventual landing spot, assuming a new CBA is worked out by tomorrow, 5pm. Add ESPN's NFC West blogger and former Tacoma New Tribune writer Mike Sando to the Kolb-to-Seattle bandwagon.

I won't get into the throw-away stuff in the piece (like comparing the compensation the Seahawks gave the Packers 10 years ago for Matt Hasselbeck back in 2001, when the Seattle front office was completely different than its current makeup, and the market for QB's wasn't exactly the same), but Sando does make a few very good points, and the odds of Kolb landing in Seattle are beginning to grow, in my opinion:
Seattle's new offensive coordinator, Darrell Bevell, spent the past five seasons in Minnesota under Reid's former offensive coordinator, Brad Childress. The offense Bevell plans to run in Seattle shares a heritage with the one Philadelphia had in mind for Kolb when the Eagles drafted him 36th overall in 2007.
Pro Football Talk also noted that connection, and it remains a good point.
"Seattle is the best fit for him in the division," (Matt) Williamson (of Scouts Inc.) said. "San Francisco and Arizona want to be more downfield passing teams as opposed to traditional West Coast. Seattle is going to be more and more West Coast. That is what they are built to do, what they are going to do, and what Kolb is going to do."
While I disagree with this weird perception everyone seems to have that Kolb can't throw the football more than 10 yards downfield, I do think that a passing game that heavily utilizes the intermediate stuff plays well into Kolb's strengths as a passer.
The Seahawks have positioned themselves well enough from a salary standpoint to use free agency if and when a salary cap returns. General manager John Schneider has said he'll be more aggressive than his mentor, Ted Thompson, in pursuing veterans. The team has ample resources to pursue what could be a longer-than-usual list of free agents. And the past year has shown the Seahawks will use the trade market without hesitation.

Those factors make it easier, in theory, to part with a draft choice for Kolb.
More importantly, those factors make it easier to sign Kolb to a long term deal once you trade for him.

As I noted a couple days ago, with Seattle, it all depends on what they think of Charlie Whitehurst. They see him in practice every day and have a better idea than anyone what they have in him. If they think Whitehurst can start in the NFL, a deal for Kolb is less likely. If they think Kolb is significantly better, then the Seahawks make a lot of sense.

Brock Huard, Seahawk Sportscaster/Sportswriter Not Sold on Kolb...

                          http://www.mynorthwest.com/category/...QB-Kevin-Kolb/

Kent Somers of The Arizona Republic examined in his blog on Tuesday the options the Cardinals have to upgrade their quarterback situation, which includes a trade for Philadelphia's Kevin Kolb.

In Tuesday's Blue 42, Brock Huard said that while Kolb would be better than Arizona's current options, there isn't much reason for Seahawks fans to be afraid of seeing him in a Cardinals uniform:

"It's going to upgrade their team, obviously. Derek Anderson didn't work. Max Hall was abysmal. They've got the young guy, (John) Skelton, that's a good player from Fordham with some nice size but is certainly unproven.

"You go back and look at Kevin Kolb, if you didn't know all the hype and the hysteria and everything else and you just looked at the byline, you just looked at the raw numbers of what he's done in four years, he's got a QB rating in four years of 73.2. He has started, in four years, seven games. He got beat out by Donovan McNabb. They drafted him in the second round to replace McNabb; it never happened. He got beat out by Michael Vick, and granted, Michael Vick is a different guy and an All-Pro and everything else. Those are two really good players. But those are the facts.

"He was the succession plan. He was to follow Donovan McNabb. And you would have thought if he was that guy and they loved him like Green Bay loved Aaron Rodgers, Michael Vick wouldn't have come to Philadelphia and (Kolb) would be your quarterback. So he didn't seize that moment and take control of it. His numbers haven't been incredible. He's had some woeful performances in just his seven starts and is 3-4 as a starter in those seven games."

Kolb has 11 touchdowns and 14 interceptions in his four-year career. For comparison, his 73.2 career passer rating equals the 28th best rating NFL quarterbacks last season. He last started in Week 17 of 2010 when the Eagles had already clinched a playoff spot. He completed 18-of-36 passes for 162 yards, a touchdown and three interceptions in a loss to Dallas.

John Clayton: Don't bet on Kevin Kolb to Seahawks

ESPN's John Clayton said Tuesday that he thinks the Seahawks' draft position will make it difficult to pull off a trade with Philadelphia for quarterback Kevin Kolb.

Don Banks of Sports Illustrated told Brock & Salk on Tuesday that he thinks the Seahawks will pursue a trade for Kolb, who's considered somewhat expendable in Philadelphia now that the Eagles have franchised quarterback Michael Vick.

The Seahawks own the 25th overall pick in April's draft but do not have a pick in the third round, having traded it to San Diego to acquire Charlie Whitehurst.

"I'd have to think if you're Philadelphia, and knowing you're only going to be getting the 25th pick in the first round, you've gotta ask for the first and third," Clayton said. "And the result is going to be (that it's) not going to happen because they don't have a third round pick because of the Whitehurst trade; they'd have to maneuver and get a third-round pick. ...
"Now, maybe what they could do is come back and offer a first this year and a second next year - pretty pricey. But I'd say right now it's gonna be hard, at 25, to be able to get Kevin Kolb."

Clayton said he thinks that if Kolb is traded, he'll end up in either Arizona or Minnesota.

"I just think there's urgency on both teams to go for veterans," Clayton said, adding that San Francisco could also be in the mix.
