  • Eagles sign TE Donald Lee to 1-year deal

    7/29/11 Update...

Eagles agreed to terms with TE Donald Lee on a one-year contract.

Lee managed just 11 catches in Green Bay last season, failing to seize the job when Jermichael Finley went down. His after-the-catch ability has vanished at age 31, as evidenced by three straight seasons under 8.0 yards per reception. He won't be guaranteed a roster spot in Philly.

when I think of Lee, I think of a guy who always seems to catch 1-5 yd TDs
We're looking for people that are fundamentally different,” vice president of player personnel Andy Weidl said Saturday night. “The love and passion for football, it's non-negotiable. They're caring, their character, they do the right thing persistently, and they have a relentless playing style that you can see on tape. The motor, it burns hot. You see them finishing plays. They have a team-first mentality. They're selfless individuals.

      Per BGN...

Lee is a big 6-4, 248 pound blocking TE who has spent the last six seasons with the Packers. He actually caught 11 TDs between 2007 and 2008 when injuries to Bubba Franks gave him a chance to play more. Since then however, he's been mostly kept to blocking duty. It's a low key signing, but one that certainly fills a role that the Eagles have lacked in recent seasons. Maybe now they can stop asking Celek to block so much and have him focus on things he's actually good at...

Don't kid yourself Jimmy. If a cow ever got the chance, he'd kill you and everyone you cared about!

Maybe not a blocking TE. Here is Lawlor's take on him:
Veteran TE has 198 career catches. Good athlete and receiver. Had some very productive years with the Packers. He started 6 games for them last year. Lee’s only a limited blocker.

Lee is here to provide competition at TE. We have Brent Celek and Clay Harbor as the top two guys. We have Martell Webb as a blocking type TE prospect. John Nalbone and Cornelius Ingram are young guys trying to show they belong in the league. Lee can step in right away and practice at a high level. He knows how to run routes and catch the ball. There was no player to strongly push Celek and Harbor prior to Lee’s arrival. The other guys have talent, but are more projects than finished products. Lee gives us a good veteran camp body. Could make the roster if injuries happen.
