  • Just gotta get this out

I spent a lot of time alone in a vehicle Friday making sales calls and that gives a man time to think. I’m as embarrassed and frustrated as I’ve ever been as an Eagles fan. That said, there is always next season and my mind is already there. Seems like that is all we have as Eagles fans most of the time.

First of all, I DO NOT think Reid will be back. I think he is tired and will step down. My favorites to replace him include Jeff Fisher and Spags if he gets fired with Norv Turner as an O-coordinator. If he is back, who knows what will happen other than Castillo being thrown to the wolves and rightly so with Spags coming in as D coordinator. The wide9 might still live unfortunately. Howard Mudd would still be around. Heck, if AR is back I think we actually might resign Desean because they WILL have the money to do it and AR sure did seem to come to Desean’s defense big time.

My roster next year would look like this:
    QB – Vick, Kafka (+1)
RB – McCoy, Lewis, Owen Schmitt (+1)
WR – Avant, Maclin, Jackson (+2)…I think they might bring Jackson back because they gave sooo much money to Vick if they let go of too many receivers they will basically be starting over with a $100 million QB. I think Cooper is a goner as is Steve Smith so there you go.
    TE – Celek, Harbor (+1)
OL – Peters, Mathis, Kelce, Watkins, Herremanns, Justice, Vandervelde, Dunlap (+1)…actually our OL is probably one of the best in the league and the strongest part of this team right now.
DE – Cole, Babin, Tapp, Graham (+1)… one of the biggest priorities in these last 4 games has to be to get Graham on the field and see what he has got. Next year is the year for Abiamiri by the way .
DT – Patterson, Jenkins, Laws, Dixon…this is arguably the best set of DT in the league…just saying…Landiri is hard to see go but I would rather have 5 outside pass rushers
LB – Rolle, Chaney, Fokou, Clayton (+2)…the second biggest priority is to find a trained killer at SLB.
CB – DRC, Nnamdi, Curtis Marsh, Brandon Hughes (+2) and they better find at least one GOOD ONE…I actually think there is a chance Asante or Joselio might be back if they can sign them. I would be OK with both but I’d also be OK with younger bodies. They might toy with the idea of Nnamdi at FS if he wants to try it and keeping Asante in place.
FS – Nate Allen, Jarrett (+1)…my second biggest priority for the final four games is to find out if Allen and Jarrett can play.
SS – Colt Anderson if healthy (+1)…I am more done with Kurt Coleman than about any other player on this team not named vince young
ST – Henry brothers and Dorenbas…they actually kicked it pretty well this year outside of the 49ers game but they are rookies so we knew that was going to happen. Henry is a very good kicker though.
Cut or be done with Vince Young, Ronnie Brown, Steve Smith, Riley Cooper, Jamal Jackson, Juqua Parker, Akeem Jordan, Casey Matthews, Kurt Coleman, Phillip Hunt. Most likely cut or trade Asante and Joselio I have no idea what they will do with him.
So basically, the way I see it the roster needs help but not as much as we think actually.

They need to find the following
    + QB of the future,
    + backup RB for depth,
    + 2 backup WRs,
+ a young developmental OL and DE both of which can be third day picks,
+ two LBs both of which need to be top three round talents, one of which can start at SLB,
+ depth at corner and FS and
+ a strong safety….. and he has to be an outstanding run support type of tackler.

The most important positions for the Eagles to fill other than coaching are the SS and SLB IMO. They are in luck because the draft actually sets up pretty well for them I think.

Remember, they will likely have 3 picks in the top 50. They could at least one if not two other third rounders if they decide to unload DRC, Asante or Desean. They could also potentially trade Parker whom they control. Justice whom they control. And, don’t be shocked one bit if trading a starting OL like Herremanns is discussed because they think they can plug Dunlap or Justice into that spot I would almost guarantee it.

The way the draft board lays out there is some good value for them at some of these positions and at different points in the draft. I watch a ton of college football so here are some guys they might be able to target IMO.

QB – RGIII will be there in the middle of the first round and they just might pull the trigger on him. I wouldn’t be the least bit shocked. My guy is a kid by the name of Brock Osweiler who is a junior but I think will come out from Arizona State. ASU is getting a new coach and Osweiler had a very good year. He is HUGE 6-8, 250, has a super strong arms, can throw with touch and is a very good athlete…think of Ben Roth without the rape charge or stupid chin dimple. I really want this kid if he comes out and I think they could get him in the second to third round. If he comes out, you are going to hear about him. I also really like a kid by the name of Chandler Harnish from N. Illinois. Very accurate, very athletic...not a huge arm but the kid can really play.

RB – There are three guys I really like not named Trent Richardson, who we will not get because he is going to be a top 10 pick and we will not take a RB in the first round. I really like Tenn. RB Tauren Poole. I like Vick Ballard from Mississippi State. I also like LaMichael James a lot but he is really not the power back they would covet.

WR – I have a crush on Alshon Jeffrey and he would make sense at about 10 where they will pick. He is a much bigger target…a Larry Fitzgerald with a little less speed. But he is a willing blocker, a good kid that will go over the middle. IF they do decide to move past Desean I think Alshon could be a Bird because WR would become a huge need. I also like Greg Childs from Arkansas and he would likely be a second to third rounder. And I like Ryan Broyles a bunch but he really doesn’t have the size we need. I like Nick Toon also and I think I like Derrick Moye but you PSU fans can set me straight on him.

OL – This is not a huge priority but they will take a developmental guard/tackle type.

DE – Melvin Ingram from South Carolina is a stud that is a 4-3 DE not a 3-4 OLB or DE. He is a younger, more athletic version of Parker and would be available in the late second round or even third round.

DT – no need at all.

LB – Vontaze Burfict is a STUD out of Arizona State. He is big and rangy sort of like a Merriman type but I am concerned that he will be more of a 3-4 OLB type because when I have watch ASU Play this year he does a lot better moving forward than backward. Manti Te'o is going to be available in the top of the second round. He is a big, athletic instinctive 4-3 SLB type and is my guy. I think they might take a shot at Don'te Hightower also from Alabama who is going to go late first rounder. He is REALLY big at 255 pounds but I think is a SLB not an OLB in a 3-4. I would have a happy fit if they could somehow get Hightower and Teo in the second round using Asante or Jackson as a chip to move up. Doubt it is going to happen but just saying it would be nice.

CB – Just take the best SEC corner that is on the board when you are picking in the 4th round and you will be fine. Cliff Harris is another kid with ridiculous cover skills from Oregon who will likely be a third round pick. After Mo Clairborne from LSU it is not a great year for CB...that could change if juniors declare.

FS – I actually think this is not a HUGE priority.

SS – I watch a ton of SEC football and there are two guys that I love. If the Birds can swing a trade back a few spots into the teens I would love for them to draft Mark Barron from Bama. He is big and a GREAT tackler. At 6-2, 220 he has got a lot of Dawkins type of skills and is a CRUSHER. Another kid I really like is Antonio Allen from South Carolina (I know three guys from South Carolina but that squad has a ton of talent). Allen is big and a sure tackler. He actually plays a hybrid position in the Gamecock defense where he is very involved in run support. That is what we need. Both of these kids are big enough and fast enough to do all that we need.

Sorry for the long post but just had to get this out there. I’m really upset and this is a cleanse to think about next year.

Just checked on some of my numbers and I was wrong. They do not control Parker but they can let him walk. No big deal.

Numbers for next year that can be unloaded to create space for Lesean, Desean, DRC and a possible free agent include:

Asante - $9.5 million number in 2012 and $10.5 million in 2013. He will be hard to trade with that number so they might just keep him because....

If they were to unload Winston Justice that is $4.2 million in 2012 and Jamal Jackson equals $1.8 million. Herremanns number is actually less than Justice's...how sick is that. Dunlap is unsigned for next year but would likely stay for between $1 and $2 million....so there is $4 million right there you could go get.

Darryl Tapp and Brandon Graham both have cap numbers in the $3 million range. They could unload Tapp and get another $3 million. It ain't hard to find another Darryl Tapp.

Laws and Dixon are both unsigned and I would say they are similar to King Dunlap in that we want to keep them around. I would say $4 million could be allocated to them to keep them happy.

Also, if you back out Vince Young, Ronnie Brown, Steve Smith, and Parker's money off of next year's cap that is more than $10 million to use for next year.

Bottom line...money is not an issue for this team. Say what you want about the front office but they can manage the cap.

Generally agree with most of this and will save the post to monitor the offseason. Thanks for giving this a lot of thought and laying it all out. Real key is whether Reid is back ... outside of LB and safety, our problem is not lack of talent. Love Reid as a man, but I think he has either lost the team or the passion for the details.

Just so weird to me that when you look at this team position by position, just about every position is at least "pretty good" to "excellent"...except LB and Safety of course. That's what scares me. Is that really all this team needs is to go out and get a couple LBs and a Safety to flip from a team that loses 2/3 of their games to a team that *wins* 2/3 of their games?

Because that's essentially what we're saying here.

They are excellent with 2 players, Peters and Cole. Pretty good doesn't mean a hell of a lot in Pro football. Pretty good gets you 4-8. Pretty good sucks pond water. Add in the guys that suck and now you wonder how the hell they won 4 games.

disagree. if you suck at one spot you get beat. they suck at two key spots both in the back 7 and they get exposed because of it. repeatedly. a good tackling SS and a stud SLB would go a longgggg way with this team

They are certainly excellent at RB ... and if used correctly CB. DL pretty darn good too, as is OL in its entirely. This team is not far away in talent, but I am much less sure about mental toughness. Think a coaching change will help, but we'll see if that's how things shake out.

I'll give you that I forgot Shady, so that gives us 3 excellent players. If you think that we are only 2 players away (a safety and LB) you are in for major disappointment next year my Bud.

I'm not abig fan of moving back. I also agree they have some good players but they need a LB (two would be the nuts) and a S that kicks ass. Not jus good but GREAT. I am all for doing what they can to get top draft talent.
Wait until next year is a terrible philosophy

we r two players away from having the personnel to be way better. coaching and mental toughness are a part of it too. on offense we are a wr with toughness and a philosiphy of toughness away. i think you oversimplified what i said

I think they have to get a QB at the top of the draft.

Zach Brown from nc at linebacker and Mark Barron at safety would be phenomenally helpful to our D

If Andy is still here I am sure RT will be looked at

No thanks on Burfict. He's a punk and that's the last thing this team needs right now

We desperately need to bring in new safties and linebackers. There is not one player at those positions now on the roster that I would want to keep. If Allen or Jarrett don't show anything in the next training camp, they should be cut. I don't want to see Fokou on the roster. Coleman can stay purely as a special teams player.

No way I would release Landri. He has been one of our best run-stoppers in the middle. He is an over-achiever on a team loaded with under-achievers.
