NFL referees have been at practice the past two days helping the Eagles learn the NFL's new rules.
The biggest change was a replay modification, allowing teams to challenge the controversial "down-by-contact" rule. If a player fumbles and the opposing team recovers but the call is "down by contact," the recovering team can now challenge the call. If they win the challenge, they claim the ball at the spot of the recovery.
The NFL also toned down touchdown celebrations. A player can no longer participate in pre-mediated celebrations or group celebrations.
In terms of game play, the NFL expanded its definition of a horse collar tackle, to include the jersey. They're also going to disallow a rushing defensive player from forcibly hitting a quarterback unless the quarterback is out of the pocket scrambling and not in a throwing motion. On field goals, extra points and punts, a defensive player can no longer line up directly over a center snapping on field goals, extra points and punts.
The NFL also sought to clarify its definition of holding to create uniformity among the penalty.
