  • Eagles Reportedly Hire LB coach

Don't know what to feel, not disgusted, not excited the guy has some experience, but Kentucky on a football resume doesn't make anyone do backflips.

Report: Rick Minter to join Eagles' staff

Rick Minter is the latest veteran college coach apparently joining Chip Kelly’s Eagles coaching staff.

Minter, who has coached at 12 colleges but never in the NFL, is believed to be joining as the Eagles’ linebackers coach.

The Eagles have not been commenting on any moves regarding assistant coaches – interviews, hirings, firings, etc., and they had no comment on a report Monday from the Big Ten Network that Minter was joining the Eagles.

Minter spent the last two years on Joker Phillips’ staff at Kentucky. Phillips was fired in November after three years, with his staff getting the axe as well. Kentucky was 2-10 this past season overall and 13-24 in three years under Phillips.

Minter has also coached at Henderson State, Arkansas, Louisiana Tech, North Carolina State, New Mexico State, Ball State, Notre Dame twice, Cincinnati, South Carolina, Marshall and Indiana State.

Minter has not coached more than three years in one place since he was at Cincinnati. This job will be his seventh in the last 11 years.

From 1994 through 2003, Minter was head coach at Cincinnati, compiling a 54-63-1 record, although he did have three future NFL head coaches on his staff at various times – John Harbaugh, Mike Tomlin and Rex Ryan.

The Eagles had five different linebacker coaches over the last 10 years -- Ron Rivera, Steve Spagnuolo, Sean McDermott, Bill Shuey and Mike Caldwell.

Six Eagles linebackers coaches have gone on to become NFL head coaches -- Walt Michaels, Rod Rust, Wade Phillips, Joe Vitt, Rivera and Spagnuolo.

We're looking for people that are fundamentally different,” vice president of player personnel Andy Weidl said Saturday night. “The love and passion for football, it's non-negotiable. They're caring, their character, they do the right thing persistently, and they have a relentless playing style that you can see on tape. The motor, it burns hot. You see them finishing plays. They have a team-first mentality. They're selfless individuals.

What's with hiring all of these defensive coaches before having a DC? That seems odd. Is it possible that there IS a DC already, but he just hasn't been named for some weird reason?

Surprisingly, I live in Kentucky. This guy is not much. UK has sucked for years and their D is not Conference USA quality and forget about SEC quality.

What is also odd is that I've read they hired the DC/LB coach from Boston College as well.

This defense already has a stronger stench than last year's! This LB has n't coached at a school with a decent defense in his life. And no DC yet!! Whoever it is will probably be picking high in the draft again after next season.

If they have 2 LB coaches on the staff - that hints at a 3-4 to me. Also - I'm wondering if their DC is still at work. I wonder if Ed Donatell is on their radar for DC. He's currently the secondary coach for the Niners but he's been a DC for a # of years in the NFL & college. He had good defenses he led in both Green Bay and Atlanta. He coached in the Pac-10 while Kelly was at Oregon. I'm just connected the dots.

According to the beat guys Donatell's name has surfaced.

It is odd to hire the staff before the coordinator, but if you covet someone still in the playoffs it might be good to get guys on board to start the evaluations. As long as they're not hiring pseudo-DCs like Washburn it doesn't seem like a big deal to me.

Evenif that is true Steve, wouldn't he be the guy choosing his assistants?
It's not like these other guys are hot commodities.

E60 - Donatell perhaps can't be hired but that doesn't mean he & Chip aren't talking with the Niners blessing. I just took a stab at the SB coaching staffs since this DC job was stringing along and Donatell's name jumped out at me.

"San Francisco denied permission to Tampa Bay for the Buccaneers to hire the 49ers' defensive backs coach, Ed Donatell, as their defensive coordinator, a league source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter on Saturday."

Hopefully the niners are more cooperative this year ... the snippet above is from February of 2012.

Actually, Minter was a head coach at Cincy before they got to be good. I remember him from my old days as a sports writer. He played KSU...was a good guy. No problem with it actually. He knows defense. At Kentucky he likely didn't have the talent.
You know Darren if you'd have told me 10 years ago that someday I was going to solve the world's energy problems I'd have said your crazy.... now lets drop this big ball of oil out the window.
