Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott will interview for the Redskins' head-coaching vacancy this weekend in Charlotte, Joesph Person of the Charlotte Observer reports. This according to a league source with knowledge of the situation.
McDermott, 39, is in third season with the Panthers after spending more than a decade in the Eagles' organization.

Under McDermott, the Panthers have improved from 28th in the league in total defense in his first season in 2011 to second this year. Carolina also is second in scoring defense and rushing defense.

McDermott said Monday he believes he is ready to become a head coach, but his focus is on the Panthers' playoff preparations. Carolina (12-4) has a first-round bye before hosting a divisional-round game Jan. 12.

It might sound crazy but I think McDermott is a good coach and would make a fine head coach. It's the kiss of death for him to go to Washington but he would be a good candidate at some point. Take a look at what the defense did under difficult circumstances with McDermott and everything since and you'll see he did a decent job overall especially with the talent he was given.

I should delete this Steve. I was thinking of that squid from the Patriots McDaniel.

McD didn't get a raw deal in Philly but it wasn't the best of circumstances for him. I think he has worked under some pretty good tutors and stands a very good chance of succeeding as a HC. Being on Wash and working for a knucklehead doesn't help his chances though.
Wait until next year is a terrible philosophy

If he was smart he would turn down Danny and wait for a better situation. Washington is one of three or four teams you do not want to go to.

Yeah, it can take a while to learn how to deal with people with that job. After Jim Johnson, the Eagles suffered through four years of DCs trying to learn on the job. Looks like McDermott needed five years (and probably better talent). Maybe even Castillo would be good in a couple more years if given the chance. McDermott was always supposed to be a really good and smart coach but didn't seem to deal with the person-to-person relationships very well, but it sounds like he's done that now -- I've read a lot of his players have a ton of respect for him now, and that defense is the reason Carolina is doing well this year.

That said, learning how to deal with a Snyder (or Jerry Jones) can also take some learning (and may be impossible), and may torpedo your career if it ends badly enough.

The Patriots have granted permission to the Browns to interview offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, the Canton-McKinley High and John Carroll University graduate, for their head coaching vacancy, Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports citing NFL Network's Albert Breer.

The Browns asked for permission on Monday to talk to McDaniels, 37.

McDaniels, 37, has a longstanding relationship with Browns general manager Mike Lombardi and has been a longtime favorite of Browns CEO Joe Banner.

They wanted to interview McDaniels for their head coaching vacancy last year, but he wasn't ready to leave New England yet and uproot his wife and four children again so quickly.

At that time, a league source told cleveland.com that McDaniels would "jump at the chance'' to coach the team he grew up rooting for in his home town of Canton, Ohio.

The Patriots are on a bye this week, meaning McDaniels can interview immediately.

I don't mind McDaniels, Cutler has shown he's a basket case so no wonder McDaniels wanted a different QB. The fact that he's from Ohio makes it an even better fit.

Getting rid of Cutler was probably not all his doing. And who wants to work with that head case. But moving up to take a guy nobody wanted instead was pretty dumb.

But Popper, you're disregarding the role human emotion and physical attraction may have played in Josh's decision. Have you forgotten:
