Eagles reportedly tried to trade for Dion Jordan

The Philadelphia Eagles made an offer almost two months ago for Miami pass rusher Dion Jordan, who played spectacularly for Kelly at Oregon but hardly at all last season with the Miami Dolphins, Bob Grotz of the Delaware County Times reports. This according to a respected NFL source.

The details are unimportant. The Eagles are said to have included a second-round pick and linebacker-defensive end Brandon Graham. For now Jordan is still part of the Dolphins, who say they’re going to find a way to get him more snaps next season.

Almost everything about a deal for Jordan still makes sense, including the contract should the Eagles package in some way a first-round pick.

Jordan’s contract wouldn’t be a huge obstacle to a trade. The Eagles would be picking up the remainder of his four-year, $20.572 million fully guaranteed pact according to Overthecap.com. The Dolphins would take a $10 million salary cap hit this year if they traded Jordan before the draft. After June 1, the Dolphins would be able to spread the cap charge over two years.

Damn! He was the 3rd overall pick last year (just before us). A lot of people thought that we would take him if he was available because of the Oregon connection.

I heard something like this but dismissed it because of the cap hit. This seems like something that might happened based on the fact that the Eagles have done nothing to get better their linebacking corp.

I don't see the cap hit as a major problem. Simply have an agreement with the dolphins in place and take the player they want int he 2nd round. Trade him and Graham to them for Jordan the day after the draft ends. They get the players they want with cap hit spread over two years, and we get serious help at pass rusher. Now we just have to talk them into letting us fleece them for Graham and a 2nd!!

Graham is trash. He has less value than a six pack of flat Schlitz.

The question becomes, given the need for a young pass rusher on defense, and the fact that Jordan could possibly live up to his draft potential, would you consider giving up #22 to get him?? I don't think they're going to take a second rounder for him. The guy has too much potential, and they invested a high pick on him.

If he's so good, why didn't he play last year for Miami? Why is he any different than Graham? I'd give Graham and a low pick (maybe) and that's it! I hope there's no truth to this rumor.

Popper. Last year, we saw for ourselves how much difference it makes when you coach up your players, and have good scheme. I think it's obvious that our coaches think they can get more out of Jordan than what he showed in Miami last year as a rookie. The difference is that Graham was here last year, with the coaching staff, and they pretty much know he's not going to be an impact player. If they are confident that Jordan can be an impact player at outside LBer in their scheme then he might be worth more of an investment. I don't think they can get him for a 2nd and a trash player.

                  This.

It also sounds as IF they do revive the talks it won't be till after June 1st.

If you're the #3 guy in the draft you don't need to be super coached to get on the field. And who says we have super coaches on defense anyway? This sounds like the old "we know more than anybody else" that we used to get from the FO. We've already had one off the charts move firing Jackson this spring. We don't need another one. Please pass on this one.

If they do something after the draft, fine. But with this draft having sick talent at the WR position, there really is potential to have a very good player sitting at 22. This team IMO doesn't need to get that rush OLB by trading away an important pick. See how things play out and add more talent to the D and let Davis do his thing.

I agree MM. I saw Jordon quite a bit when he was at Oregon and never saw him as a dominant player anyway. There is no way in hell at 22 I would trade for him.

If he is a sure fire demon, great, can't pull the trigger fast enough, but his Oregon tape is all you have of him and IMO nothing jumps out to say BEAST, you have some near BEAST potential at 22 at other positions.

If the Eagles were prepared to take him at #4 last year, it stands to reason they would use the #22 this year if they could. A player who can really get after the QB is a major need for this defense right now. We have some OK options, and I'm not sure there were any better targets in free agency, so there wasn't any real chance to improve there. From what I'm reading, the two main pass rush threats are most likely to be gone by pick 22, so we really won't have a chance to improve in the draft either without moving up significantly.

He was injured in camp last year, so was always behind, and Miami had Cameron Wake and Olivier Vernon starting -- two terrific players -- so he wasn't going to be cracking that lineup as it was. Miami plays a 4-3 so Jordan was going to have to be learning the 4-3 DE position anyways. It makes one wonder what Miami was doing trading up to get Jordan, who many though was miscast as a 4-3 DE, but you almost have to assume they planned to let him learn the position for a year or so and be prepared for Wake to leave in free agency or something like that.

Still, you don't give up #1 picks lightly. Offering the #2 and Graham is a no-brainer, but the 22 pick is significantly more. You'd have to be very confident based on his NFL tape that he could still be a great 3-4 OLB; if he was getting overmatched it wouldn't bode well. It sounds like the Eagles might have other plans for that pick as well (trade up for Mike Evans?), but you do wonder if they will reconsider if their targeted players are gone by #22. At this point I don't expect a deal like this to happen before draft day and probably not at all. It doesn't make any sense to me for Miami to trade him after June 1; if all you are going to get is 2015 draft picks you may as well keep him and trade for 2015 picks after the season.
