  • Carlos Emmons - either a starter or cut

    by the sounds of it:

Emmons had better hope luck is on his side this summer. Three years into a five-year, $16.5-million contract, he is facing his first true battle for a starting spot in eight years. And if he loses this one, he might be without a job, not simply a backup for the Giants.

Emmons, who turns 33 on Sept. 3 -- the day after final rosters are set -- is the incumbent starter on the weak side. It's a spot he held early last season before switching back to the strong side after three games. But it's one he will have to earn because Brandon Short is back with the Giants to challenge Emmons for the job.

And while Short came at a bargain price (one year, $585,000), Emmons' salary for this season is $2 million. Translation: If Emmons doesn't win the job, he could get cut, a move that would save the Giants about $200,000 on the salary cap.

I'd sign him 10 seconds after he is released. Dhani Jones sucks.

Does Carlos have anything left in the tank? If so, would he be able to push Jones - either up or out?

        I'm still a Emmons-backer, he's worth a look.

Would the Giants really do that to save $200K? Teams spend that much on ankle tape.

To save $200K of cap space but save $2MM in actual cash? Sure!

I realized after I posted we were talking cap space, not actual $$$, but even so, given that the Giants season completely fell apart last year because of the devestation to their LB corps, wouldn't it make sense to keep Emmons around, even spending the $2mm given that the $200K in cap space it would open up isn't even enough to sign a rookie free agent?

Sounds a bit penny-wise, pound foolish if you ask me. But hey, if teh Giants want to do it, I'd be happy to grab Carlos on the cheap.

There is the issue of a roster spot and whether you keep around a $2MM insurance policy or keep a young player that has long term potential. And oh yeah . . . .still save $2MM

If Richmonds' back is that bad, I would look at him short term. He knows the system.

Well I for one would be very leary about bringing Emmons back here now.

That D, last year was hurt by their LB's, if THEY cut him how much does that indicate how much he has left?

He is like 33, he has had a history of injuries, and he had a bunch of sour grapes after the Eagles didn't match the Giants offer.

People may scoff at Jones, but IMO, right now he might be a better bet than Carlos is, and personally I would rather see them go with the youth movement and take a chance THAT way rather than bring back another older potential injury problem.

                    Just my 2 cents.

Does anyone else find it odd that they were playing him at WILL?? Emmons was a great SAM for us. I'd sign him in half a second if he passed the physical.

I can't imagine he'd cost more than the vet minimum if he shook free so that is an easy decision should he pass the physical.

Emmons IMO is done. No point in bringing someone back who can't stay healthy. We already have Barber for that.
