Emmons had better hope luck is on his side this summer. Three years into a five-year, $16.5-million contract, he is facing his first true battle for a starting spot in eight years. And if he loses this one, he might be without a job, not simply a backup for the Giants.
Emmons, who turns 33 on Sept. 3 -- the day after final rosters are set -- is the incumbent starter on the weak side. It's a spot he held early last season before switching back to the strong side after three games. But it's one he will have to earn because Brandon Short is back with the Giants to challenge Emmons for the job.
And while Short came at a bargain price (one year, $585,000), Emmons' salary for this season is $2 million. Translation: If Emmons doesn't win the job, he could get cut, a move that would save the Giants about $200,000 on the salary cap.
