  • Culture Beats Talent

I'd like to hear folks thoughts on this theory which Chip has advocated.

The results so far have been pretty spectacular and it is hard to argue that Chip has not built this group of players into a cohesive team and developed a culture of achievement and accountability.

That said, the talent gap between us and the elite teams is real. Obviously we're only in Year 2 and Chip does not fully have the roster he wants, but I do have concern he believes elite talent is not necessary and that the culture will overcome any talent deficiencies we have.
Eliminate distractions, create energy, fear nothing, and attack everything.

If this was college or even high school... maybe culture can over come some small difference in talent. IMHO, in the NFL, the talent level is so close that having lesser talent can not be made up for solely on culture.

As 60 said obviously you need to have both! And also as we have seen the MOST talented teams do not always win---- it seems to me that whomever gets the better "MIX" has the best shot.

when the talent level is equal or close, culture should be the difference. Though Chip has revamped our depth, the frontline talent falls a bit short. Given another draft and offseason, Chipper takes care of that too IMO.
We're looking for people that are fundamentally different,” vice president of player personnel Andy Weidl said Saturday night. “The love and passion for football, it's non-negotiable. They're caring, their character, they do the right thing persistently, and they have a relentless playing style that you can see on tape. The motor, it burns hot. You see them finishing plays. They have a team-first mentality. They're selfless individuals.

I concur 100%. Both are needed, and in the right proportions. Which is a totally subjective criteria

I think the actual quote is "culture beats scheme". Chip always says its a player's league so I'm not sure he would agree that culture beats talent.

Chip got rid of DJax ... clearly he thought he wasn't worth it. Do we really think Chip doesn't value elite talent in general? I don't.

              Also, rspurr has it right.

Quite frankly there are some real resemblances between the beginning of the Chip Kelly era and the beginning of the Andy Reid era. In Reid's case, culture didn't prove to be quite enough. On the other hand, pursuing talent (or more accurately getting away from culture) certainly proved to be worse than pursuing culture the last few years of the Andy Reid era.

Larrys and Joes beat Xs and Os.
But if Larry is a me-first asshole that doesn't want to block, the whole team suffers.

I don't think the Eagles are quite where they need to be, but I didn't expect them to be there at this point anyway. I like the trajectory they appear to be on. I feel that their practice habits, and approach to conditioning gives them a bit of an advantage. But, they are still just a bit behind Seattle, GB, and a healthy SF in the talent department. I think they are getting the most out of these players, and that's great, but a couple of impact, pro-bowl caliber players in addition to what they have would make a huge difference.
