  • Birds 24/7--ST Coach Fipp Warned Players About Short Kickoff Before It Happened

IMO an interesting piece of info uncovered regarding last week's game. Which makes the miscue on the opening kickoff even more perplexing.

As you know by now, the kickoff was short. Neither Brad Smith nor Josh Huff fielded it. The Cowboys recovered deep in Eagles territory and got in the end zone to take a 7-0 lead.

But the show Turning Point on NBC Sports revealed an interesting bit of information about the play: special teams coach Dave Fipp warned the players in the pre-game huddle that the kick would be short:

If you're a glass half-full type of person, great job by Fipp. He had checked out the wind and tried to have his players ready.
On the other hand, apparently the message didn't get through.
Chip Kelly said earlier this week that Smith should have fielded the kick, but that didn't happen.

"Yeah, the up back should have taken it," Kelly said. "We were on the 10 and the ball landed on the 15. Josh was too deep for him to field the kick. I think what he thought was that the ball got hit - looked like it came off his foot pretty good, but looked like it got held up by the wind.
"That's why we have Brad in that situation, in case it's a short kick so he can field it."

There were plenty of miscues in all three phases Sunday night. But the opening kickoff got the Eagles off to a horrible start, and based on the video clip, it's an error that easily could have been avoided.

It's all on Smith if you ask me. If Huff tried to get that ball on the fly he would still be in the hospital. The ball was kicked right to Smith. Stupid.
    "Hey Giants, who's your Daddy?"

Yep. Kelly said as much too. "That's why we have Brad in that situation.." I wonder if he's gone after the season. Not solely because of this gaffe, but I'm sure it couldn't have helped.

IMO Smith has been a little underwhelming . He was talked up to be a special team stud, but the additions seem to be outshining him
We're looking for people that are fundamentally different,” vice president of player personnel Andy Weidl said Saturday night. “The love and passion for football, it's non-negotiable. They're caring, their character, they do the right thing persistently, and they have a relentless playing style that you can see on tape. The motor, it burns hot. You see them finishing plays. They have a team-first mentality. They're selfless individuals.

I haven't seen anything that dumb since that stiff running back threw the ball away on the goal line. So long Smitty.

The more that I think about it, the more pissed off I get. The ONLY reason that he's even on the team is to prevent something that dumb from happening on a kick off. I'm surprised Chip didn't call the moron over to him right then and there and put a bullet in his head.

He's a pending FA. IMO there's no way he's brought back. Especially after this. Unless of course he is, lol
