  • BGN-Jeff Garcia Wants To Throw Hat Into QB Coach Search

    http://www.bleedinggreennation.com/2...-bill-musgrave

It just so happens that a former Eagles player is interested in the job. In an interview on 97.5 The Fanatic's Jon and Sean Show, former Eagles quarterback Jeff Garcia wants to throw his name in the mix for the job. Via @BrianSeltzer975:

"Jeff Garcia on @JonandSeanShow on becoming QB coach: 'Whether it's Philadelphia, OAK, SF, I'm putting my name out there. This is my passion. Jeff Garcia also said his agent reached out to Eagles to explore possibility of joining Chip Kelly's coaching staff once Bill Musgrave left."

As Eagles fans know, Garcia joined the team in 2006 as a backup to franchise quarterback Donovan McNabb. The veteran Garcia was thrust into action after McNabb suffered a season-ending injury in mid-November. Garcia led the Eagles to a 6-2 record as a starter and threw 10 touchdowns to only two interceptions in that span. He also helped the Eagles win a playoff game over the New York Giants before losing to the New Orleans Saints in the Divisional round. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed Garcia in free agency in the 2007 offseason.

The soon-to-be 45-year-old Garcia last played in the NFL since 2011. In 2014, he made his coaching debut by serving as the quarterbacks coach for the Montreal Alouettes.

If I had to guess, the Eagles will opt for someone with more coaching experience. But Garcia is probably at least worth an interview, right?

I think he would make a good coach AND his wife would be back in the area.

We're looking for people that are fundamentally different,” vice president of player personnel Andy Weidl said Saturday night. “The love and passion for football, it's non-negotiable. They're caring, their character, they do the right thing persistently, and they have a relentless playing style that you can see on tape. The motor, it burns hot. You see them finishing plays. They have a team-first mentality. They're selfless individuals.

More experience? You mean like the stiff that he would be replacing? Or Marty Morningweg? More recycled junk?

If youve ever seen the videos of Garcia working with JaMarcus Russell, you can see he's a good teacher (even though his student was a walking bag of rocks). He always seemed like an intelligent guy, so why not?

Seems like a candidate for an apprenticeship, for sure. Don't think he's ready to be a QB coach, tho.

Why not Mike? He played Pro QB for about 20 years. Would you rather have recycled junk?

60, just because a guy can do something, that doesn't mean he can teach it. And let's take a look at the particulars here.........is Jeff Garcia's game in any way similar to Foles'? Apple and an orange.

I agree with your point, but he did do a year as QB coach in Canadian football. Let's see what Chip says I guess.

Just a great team guy. I would bet that he'd be a very loyal assistant.

I have no problem with Garcia being the QB coach. I think he'd be a great asset.

In my mind the key here is how much the QB coach has to know about Chip's system. If he's coaching basic QB skills like footwork, progressions and mechanics of a quick release, then Garcia would be a good guy to bring in. If the job involves coaching Chip's system and teaching players how to interpret and understand the various packages and options Chip uses then JG isn't the right choice since he's never been involved in anything remotely similar to Chip's offense. I would think coaching Chip's system would be part of the deal but Musgrave clearly had no background with it -- maybe that's why he wasn't successful this year. I'd be really interested in hearing Chip talk about the QB Coaches role here.

I agree Juk, but unless you are robbing Oregon for your coaches ,you are gonna have a hard time finding any. Being a QB friendly system, I would think a rather astute exQB like Garcia, could learn and coach the system faster than most.

Well my guess is that the coach does both. It would seem to me that a QB coach would most likely work with fundamentals. As for already knowing the offense that is impossible to find no matter wats situation a QB coach goes to. How would any QB coach know a team's offense before he got there? Garcia played for so many teams that I would think that he could pick things up quicker than most. I would hope that whoever they pick up is a demanding type like Lazar. I don't know if Garcia would be that type of guy.

Garcia got in peoples faces as a QB, to me that was one of his better qualities.
