SUMMARY
Weird, weird game.
The starting offense was effective, but hardly spectacular. Donovan only completed one pass to a WR (Brown). And even that was a WR screen. Unfortunately, I can only go off the TV feed. I don't know if the guys were open and it was the Ravens blitz that hurt us or if the guys were covered. The WR play is a concern, but I can't be more definitive without downfield angles to see what happened. Reno was the starting RB and that limited the offense.
I knew the Ravens would blitz a lot and they did. Good practice for the regular season, but our offense wasn't doing much to counter the blitz. Andy doesn't believe in showing much in preseason. That can give you a false read on things. Our OL was sloppy at blitz pickup and adjustments.
My OL notes are somewhat limited because I simply didn't know who to blame or what to say on several plays. I watched some plays over and over and still couldn't figure out who screwed up. That goes for starters and backups.
The backup offense was bad. Koy Detmer made me long for the days of Doug Pederson. Koy should not make this team. It has to be abundantly clear to anyone watching that he is no longer an NFL caliber player. The turnovers have to stop. Bad habit for the guys to get into. Things did pickup when Timmy Chang came into the game midway through the 4th Qtr.
The defense I thought played well in the 1st half. They gave up 192 yds, though. Surprised me when I saw that figure. The Ravens OL handled our starting DL pretty well. We got some pressure, but didn't really go wild until the backups got in. Juqua Thomas had 3 sacks and played very well. Trent Cole continues to impress. Brian Dawkins had his best game of the preseason. Dhani Jones actually played well. He was active and in on several plays. Brodrick Bunkley continues to show incredible strength. This kid could be something special.
The Ravens passing game was surprisingly effective. Give credit to McNair and Boller for making good throws and their WRs for making some good catches. Aside from Musa Smith's long run, the Ravens running game was up and down.
There was some good and some bad in this game. I wish I could get some honest answers from Andy after he studies the tape. Do we go for a WR? A RB? Is Koy finally so bad that Andy will cut him (not now, but in Sept)?
QB
McNabb – Scrambled on 2nd play of game. Good to see. Ran around like the Donovan of old on a couple of plays. Threw the ball well to RBs and TEs. Only one completion to a WR.
Garcia – DNP
Detmer – Ugh. Underthrew a deep ball and it was picked off. Got a nasty look from Reid when he got over to the sideline. Had to deal with a lot of pressure, but didn't handle it well at all. Looked very uncomfortable. Bad, bad game. Held on PKs.
Chang – Threw the ball okay. Was sure better than Detmer. Threw a very good pass to Sampy for 1st down. Handled the blitz fairly well. Showed some elusiveness. Threw the ball to various spots and to WRs, TEs, and RBs.
WR
R. Brown – Caught a WR screen and got a short gain.
Baskett – Started as the slot rcvr. Just missed tackle in KO covg. Had a deep ball thrown his way, but could not get separation and the pass was incomplete.
Gaffney – Had a couple of catches on a drive in the 4th Qtr. Ran good routes. Caught another couple of balls on another drive.
G. Lewis – Drew holding call in KO covg. Got in on tackle on 2nd KO. Had a deep ball thrown his way, but it was picked off. Could not hold onto a slant after big hit from BAL CB.
Avant – Drew holding call. Got leveled in punt covg. Ran an End-Around. The Ravens covered it well and it lost a yard.
Jenkins – Had one pass thrown his way, but was knocked out of his hands. Had another thrown behind him. Caught a couple of 4th Qtr passes.
McCants – Started as the X-rcvr. First play of game was a deep ball to him. Well covered. INC. Drew a PI call.
Gasperson –
Sampy – Couldn't hold onto a pass in the 4th Qtr. Hit by the defender just as the ball got there. Good catch along the sideline.
Ford - Good catch on a seam route.
Outlaw - Okay punt return late in the game.
TE
LJ Smith – Nice catch over the middle.
Schobel – Lousy block on a KOR. His guy tackled Reed. Poor game as a run blocker.
Thorn – Dropped a deep pass. Not good.
Bartrum –

Westbrook – DNP
Mahe – Good blitz pickup on opening play. Caught TD pass in the flat. Fumble after catch and run. Ray Lewis grabbed him and knocked the ball out.
Moats - Fumble on 1st carry. Showed his ability to run with quick burst to gain 5, but the ball was pushed out. Flashed good speed. Did okay on blitz pickup. Needs to be more decisive, though. Caught a couple of passes, including one good one in the flat.
Perry – Good KOR. Got 28 yds. Didn't see him at RB.
Buckhalter – Came in on the 2nd offensive series. Outstanding blitz pickup. Attacked the blitzer. 48 yds on a screen pass. Almost looked like a shovel pass. Buck ran okay on the play, but didn't look 100%. Not sure how fast he is. Most impressive run to me was when he attacked the LOS and no hole was there. Ran hard. No hesitation.
M. Johnson - Good run on a Draw play. Looked like he missed a blitz pickup. Couldn't tell if it was supposed to be a screen pass to him or a regular pass play. Had another play that went bad. Marty blocked the LB for a second, but Smith got free and Sacked Chang.
FB
Parry – Good lead block on early Mahe run. Could not block Suggs on a pass play. Tough assignment, but should have done a better job. Suggs looped deep and came back to sack #5.
Tapeh – Got snaps with the 1's at FB. Okay blitz pickup. Slowed down blitzer, but still hit McNabb.
Spach –
J. Davis - Catch on screen pass. Hurt late in the game. Was grabbing his knee, but walked off.
OT
Thomas – Suggs beat him on a couple of plays.
Runyan – Sort of a sloppy game.
Justice – Called for a False Start. Had an okay game.
McCoy – Needs to sustain his blocks better. Okay with his hands. Has okay feet, but tends to set and reach rather than moving his feet and staying in good position.

Herremans – Let Thomas get by him and pressure McNabb.
Andrews – Got really good push, as always.
Jean-Gilles – About the same as last week. Has some plays where he really shines, but will match those with plays where he really struggles.

Howard – Was half a second late in getting to McNair on a 3rd down. Let him get the pass off, but Darren got a shot on him.
Cole – Got snaps at RDE and LDE. Good tackle on run play. Also had a TFL on 3rd/short to force FG. Looped inside and floored McNair, but he still completed the pass. Got good pressure on several other plays.
McDougle – DNP
Thomas – Had a sack early in 2nd half. Just stayed low and got around the RT. Got another sack, but was unblocked on the play. Got good pressure on another play. Had a 3rd sack when he got by a RB sent to block him.
Short – Played RDE and LDE.
Lee – Played LDE and RDE.
DT
Patterson – Quick off the ball. Good effort. Plays to the whistle.
Walker – DNP
Rayburn – Started at RDT. Got some push. Quick off the ball. Hustled and played hard.
Bunkley - Started at RDT in 2nd half. Really holds the point of attack. Collapsed the pocket on the second play by just driving the OL straight back. Was double teamed the next play. Continued to drive his man back when the Ravens single blocked him. Blew up a running play and allowed McCoy to get a TFL. Just missed getting the sack on JT's 3rd QB takedown. Got sack of Boller.
Jasper – Got pressure on one pass play. Almost drew a hold.
Ramsey – Played RDE in one set (Jasper was DT along with Bunk). Got some push, but obviously isn't DE fast. Got under the LT and drove him back. Dropped into coverage from RDE on one play. Was active as a DT, but didn't make any special plays. Really hustles and is around the ball a lot.
Marshall – Good effort. Played hard. Was shedding blocks and making tackles. Came on a stunt and hit the QB just after he threw the ball. Was called for a penalty. Offside penalty as well.
SLB
D. Jones – Shot upfield on a run play and almost got Lewis for a TFL. Good speed. Blitzed vs run on another play and set up a TFL for Mike Lewis. Played the run well. Came up hard. Good tackle on TE in flat. Blitzed off the edge, but was picked off by the RT.
Roper – Tkl in KO covg. Had an okay game, but didn't do anything to stand out. Does a good job of hustling to get to the ball, but still looks raw as a LB. Got hurt late in the game.
MLB
Trotter –
Sim – Good covg on TE in endzone. Sack of Boller on 3rd down blitz.
Gaither – Great hit on punt returner forced a fumble, but was flagged for being illegally downfield. Almost had TFL on running play. RB managed to dive and get a yard. Just missed an INT. Continues to be around the ball a lot. TFL late in the game. Very good at shooting gaps. Times that very well.
WLB
McCoy – Didn't really stand out. Blitzed off the edge, but slipped as he got into the backfield. Flashed his speed, once again this week. Hustles all over the field. Got pinned inside by the FB on Musa Smith's long TD run. Matt was aggressive in attacking the blocker, but needed to keep outside leverage. Once he was sealed, there was a huge hole.
Barber – Got some reps at WLB. Good downfield tackle on long screen pass. Good covg on WR on crossing route.
Daniels – Was moved back by the FB on a lead block. Stuck with the play, but has to play stronger.
S
Dawk – Good physical tackle on D. Mason. Almost stripped the ball out. Good PBU on pass to Heap. Had a PBU on a WR. Really physical game. Recovered fumble.
Lewis – Missed a tackle on Musa Smith. Did not have a good game from what I saw. Always seemed to be a step late or just out of reach of making the play.
Mikell – Just missed a tackle in punt covg.
Reed – Starting KOR and PR. 1st KOR was okay, but blocking was poor. 2nd KOR was the same.
Considine – Was active in STs covg. Sloppy tackle on Wilcox. Needed help from Dhani.
M. Ware – Very good tackle in punt covg. Called for horse collar tackle, though. Big hit on RB. Broke up pass in endzone with hit on Wilcox. Poor coverage on Darling resulted in a TD. Misplayed the route.
S. Ware -

Brown – Had a couple of good tackles of Jamal Lewis. Derrick Mason got the better of him in the slot.

Wynn – Tackled for a loss on a PR.
Hanson – Was the #3 CB. Stumbled while covering a WR and gave up a pass of almost 30 yds.

David Akers – KO's were going to the goal line pretty consistently.
Jeremy Bloom - No return on 1st punt. Caught his 1st KO smoothly and got upfield for almost 25 yds. Good burst on 2nd KOR. Got about 20 yds. Looked fast. Aggravated his hamstring injury.

MISC
* OL seemed to handle stunts better this week, but still were sloppy more than they should be.
* The Ravens ran a lot of blitzes and exotic fronts. They were using the Bear front and variations of the 46. This is the kind of attack you'd expect in a regular season game.
* 1st Nickel LB unit was Barber and Trotter. Dawk also got snaps at LB in the Nickel.
* Derrick Mason had an outstanding game. So did WR Devard Darling. Terrell Suggs was great on defense.
* Used the shotgun on at least one play. Also did some hurry-up offense.
* The Eagles have scored points on the opening drives of all 3 games. Penalties played a big part tonight, but it is still a good sign to see early success.
* #2 OL: Justice - Jean-Gilles - Fraley - Darilek - McCoy
