  • Does Dallas recognize that Bryant really NEEDS to get paid?

The Bryant contract situation could get interesting. I hope to God it blows up!

IMO, Dallas is a dangerous team with a happy and motivated Bryant that poses a serious threat to the Birds. Without him (and Murray) the offense is rather pedestrian even with a very good Oline and a very good QB. Perhaps my gut wrenching dread that Dallas will win another gold ring before our Birds get even one colors my thinking but here goes...

Bryant is insisting on a long term deal with big guaranteed $. Right now he's asking for $17 annually but a long term deal is key to him. Given his history and knowing (better I'm sure than the public does) what a fucking head case Bryant is off the field, Jones et al are VERY reluctant to give Bryant a long term deal with big guarantees.

Everyone seems to believe that Bryant loves playing and being a Cowboy so much that he won't possibly hold out. But I believe there may be other powerful forces at work that could influence the actions of this less than emotionally stable man-child.

The potential beauty of this situation, IMO, is that getting paid big money-serves multifaceted goals for Bryant. (It's more than just greed on Bryant's part. It's also about recognition, honor and respect. When you were born and raised in the terrible circumstances of Bryant's youth and have been humiliated repeatedly when these circumstances were made public, things like recognition, honor and respect can become immensely powerful and valued goals.) If the Cowboys play hardball with Bryant (he may even see a 1 year $12.2 Mil franchise tag as failing to honor and respect his value to Dallas) this could blow up in there face. He wants Dallas to 'commit' to him!

To help things along, we also have the totally unbiased genius Moose Johnson volunteering that he believes Bryant is "selfish" for wanting so much money. I'm sure Bryant appreciates advice like that from an ex-Cowboy...especially a white guy who, although no more than a mediocre player, now has a very cushy announcing job with Fox Sports. (Let's please have more criticism of Bryant from other millionaire ex Cowboys and current Dallas FO staff and players!)

my wish: Eventually there needs to be some REAL pay back for Jones' repeated irresponsible gambling on high risk 'value picks' and Free Agents that other teams want no part of.

    Let it be now...with Bryant!

Nice try tino. However, I'm sure the collective psychiatric departments of the entire Ivy league couldn't come up with a remedy for that friekin piece of work! I just hope the poor bastard and his stable of illegitimate kids and girlfriends can survive on the mere $13 million this year. Plus, he's got to pick up the beer and pizza tab his babysitters ring up keeping an eye on him 24/7.
    "Hey Giants, who's your Daddy?"

It's my understanding that Dallas is no longer providing Bryant with babysitters. I wonder if that's because they actually feel that he has matured to a point where he's not a threat to himself, or if it's because they feel that at some point he will screw up, and sabotage his bargaining position.

Either way, I hope things go sour. You know, Dallas kinda had a cinderella season last year. Everything went right. Nobody important got hurt. It was kind of like the season the Eagles had the year before. And, like the Eagles last year, it really wouldn't surprise me to see them have a rough season.

I often wondered if teams ever " set up" a player when they decided they've had enough.
We're looking for people that are fundamentally different,” vice president of player personnel Andy Weidl said Saturday night. “The love and passion for football, it's non-negotiable. They're caring, their character, they do the right thing persistently, and they have a relentless playing style that you can see on tape. The motor, it burns hot. You see them finishing plays. They have a team-first mentality. They're selfless individuals.

I dunno. But, they certainly need him. The guy is a nutjob, but he's one of the best WRs in the league. If they're setting him up, it's an attempt to lessen his value. Interesting, they let Murray walk, because they supposedly couldn't afford to pay both. Now, they are haggling with Bryant, and it's causing issues. Meanwhile Murray is doing what he does here. I can see why he was popular in Dallas, the guy is a leader, a great teammate, and has great work ethic. Along with a lack of off the field issues. Meanwhile, Dez is becoming a headache, and hopefully a big distraction.

            EB,
The idea that Dallas might let Bryant go loose on his own in hope that he would revert to form and fuck up, thereby giving the Dallas FO 'hand' is interesting...and something the unprincipled Jones is perfectly capable of.

I very much doubt that Jones would like to orchestrate losing Bryant altogether because he is such an important piece in their offense. But it's possible that even Jones, who will put up with bad behavior in direct proportion to the player's talent, has grown tired of all of Bryant's antics on and off the field. Your thought is more plausible that they would like Bryant to mess up just enough to compromise his bargaining power

Somewhat surprisingly, the attitude of Dallas fans (as reflected in the strong majority of posts on Dallas Fan Zone) is strongly opposed to meeting Bryant's demands of a long term deal stating at $17 mil per year. Bryant is adored by Dallas fans for his game and, up until now, fans have been indifferent to his ass clown behavior on and off the field. But his big $ demands, if met, are seen as threatening the overall viability of the team's return to glory.

Having an asset like Bryant, a player with tremendous talent governed by an unpredictable ten cent head, is a bit like having the proverbial 'tiger by the tail'. Here's hoping the tiger starts eating his keepers!

the sad part is SOMEONE will pony up his money if he hits the market.

Please let Dallas keep him. If he goes somewhere else (except wash) they might actually make him accountable.
