Brandon Boykin slams Chip Kelly after being traded by the Eagles

    Yikes.

With Chip Kelly having full control over the Eagles' player personnel department, there's no doubt it was his decision to trade Brandon Boykin to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Saturday evening. Now that Boykin is gone, he had some thoughts to share on his former coach. According to Derrick Gunn of CSN Philly, Boykin said the following message in a text:

"The truth is Chip is uncomfortable around grown men of our culture. He can't relate, and that makes him uncomfortable, he likes to be in total control of everything. Players can excel when you naturally let them be who they are and in my experience that hasn't been important to him. I'm forever grateful to Mr. Lurie, Howie, my teammates, and fans of Philadelphia."

    Those are strong words.

Boykin isn't the only former Eagles player to criticize Chip Kelly after leaving the team. Earlier this offseason, LeSean McCoy accused Kelly of getting rid of the "good black players" on the team. Former Eagles assistant coach Tra Thomas once said there are players who feel like there's a "hint of racism" in Philadelphia's locker room.

Kelly is set to speak with the media before training camp starts today. There's no doubt he'll be asked about Boykin's remarks.

I don't think it's racism, I think it more is an issue where Chip can't tolerate any individualism or resistance to buying into Chips world, all the way. In short, he he's a control freak with a bit of a Napoleon complex.

This has to change, long term. This ain't college, Chip.

The same stuff happens up here with Belechek and it works for him. Of course the fact that their division has been a joke for over 10 years helps too. A few years back they traded Richard Seymour when they had no Dline for future picks. There was also the year they cut the heart and soul of their defense Ty Law one week before the season started because he wanted a raise and they got trounced by Buffalo in the opener and then went onto win the SB. That's when Tom Jackson made the famous quote that "The Patriots hate their coach Bill Belechek ". I guess we just have to trust Chip.

Oh I'm not bailing on Chip. But you read these comments from a guy like Boykin stating that Chip doesn't relate well or communicate wellwith some players, and you just figure that that is part of the learning curve for Chip.

(sigh) Can someone just leave the team and set out to prove them wrong by excelling ON THE FIELD instead of yapping off-field? I understand the emotions that may be involved with a team trading a player away, but true or not some things are better left unsaid IMO.

Chip: "I Don't Know Why He Would Say That..."

            http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com...ould-say-that/

“I don’t know. In talking to him last night I think he was stunned, he was disappointed. He really liked it here,” Kelly said.

Kelly said that when he informed Boykin he had been traded, Boykin took it like a pro and didn’t express any hard feelings.

“When he left here last night he shook my hand and gave me a hug, didn’t say anything,” he said. “I like Brandon. I just don’t know. I really don’t know.”

Kelly said the Steelers, who gave up a 2016 draft pick for Boykin, have been calling the Eagles for months about acquiring him in a trade. The Steelers recently upped their offer to either a fourth-round pick or a fifth-round pick, depending on Boykin’s playing time, and that was the offer the Eagles accepted.

“They actively pursued him. They wanted to trade for him at the draft and we turned it down,” Kelly said.

Kelly also said he would have liked to keep Boykin, but the Eagles think they have more good cornerbacks than they’ll be able to keep on the 53-player roster. So if they can get a draft pick for one of those cornerbacks, they’re going to do it.

“It more speaks to what our depth was at the position,” Kelly said. “We’re going to have to make some tough decisions at corner and we’re not going to be able to keep them all.”

Despite Boykin’s comments, Kelly said he still likes Boykin.

“I’ve always been a Brandon Boykin fan. I think he did an unbelievable job in the two and a half years I was with him and I wish him nothing but success,” Kelly said.

The feeling does not appear to be mutual.

You know, perhaps he should view this as an opportunity. As an opening door (Steelers) instead of a closing door. He may now get the (more probable) chance to play outside as he has always wanted to. Doesn't that count for anything?

Claude have mercy...(hat tip to Bernie Mack)

That could well be true Fresh. Then again, NOBODY likes being traded. It's a huge blow to your ego. Add in all the rumors that have been flying around for quite awhile and I'm sure he's frustrated. I think the only thing that Chip couldn't relate to was the fact that Brandon is only 5'9". Once he gets by being traded he's going to realize this is a better situation for him.

Didn't Chip draft all white players? Hasn't he traded away all the black players?

My god this man is coaching an NFL team ONLY so he can display his ultra aggressive racist beliefs!!!!!

Boykin wasn't gonna start here and it wasn't because he is "out of culture" (whatever the F that means)---- he wasn't gonna start here unless he grew about 3 or 4 inches and bought into Chips control.

Being a control freak does not, by itself, make you a racist. But some of these guys can not resist using the race card any chance they can.

I've looked but can't find "the Boykin clarification ". He said that Chip is not a racist. I think he meant to say that Chip is moody. He said that Chip will pass you in the hallway and not say a word to you. Also said that you need your coach both on and off the field. He was referring to Chip's personality more than anything else. I guess Brandon wanted a more touchy-feely type coach.

I call BULLSHIT---- he can backpeddle all he wants now but this is what he said ----

In a text message to Comcast SportsNet's Derrick Gunn, Boykin said Kelly is “uncomfortable around grown men of our culture.” (Both he and Gunn are black, that is their "culture", the whole world knows what he is referring to)
“He can't relate and that makes him uncomfortable,” Boykin added in the text message. “He likes total control of everything, and he don't like to be uncomfortable. Players excel when you let them naturally be who they are, and in my experience that hasn't been important to him, but you guys have heard this before me.”

This is CLEARLY an attempt to intimate or infer that Chip does things with a certain amount of racial tones.

Sorry it is just another guy trying to play the card...... and now he wants to back away from it. Just like Lesean, he couldn't, wouldn't or cite ANY example that has any basis in fact. He is an ASS.

Well, at least he's backpedaling. "Culture" has a few meanings around NovaCare these days.

I agree fresh; I don't think Chip is racist but I can easily believe he wants people 100% on his plan. Don't say anything against his plan, don't half step when you get out there, play where I tell you to play and when to play there, etc. Most coaches are like that but my guess is Chip is anal about it.
As a side note I am sorry to see Boykin go. He was a good player and, by all accounts, a good person. But he is gone so we move on. I will say it is in the back of my mind that I hope Chip doesn't ruin this team for me.
Wait until next year is a terrible philosophy
                              Hope is not a strategy
                              RIP
