Here’s what we saw during Tuesday’s practice at the NovaCare Complex.
11:52 – Gone are the days when the Eagles were hard up for a return man. Today’s session opens with punt return drills and there is a full stable of quality options back there, led by Darren Sproles and Nelson Agholor. (Jordan Matthews is out there, too, though I’m not sure Chip Kelly will want to go down that road when the bullets are live.) On kick return, the group includes Agholor, Ryan Mathews and Josh Huff. It looks like Kelly has some pretty serious firepower on special teams, which as we know is no accident.

11:57 -- A light rain is beginning to fall, putting my observation note-taking in peril. What did Sheil do in these situations? Was his notebook laminated? So many questions I should have asked...
12:03 -- Maybe it's the weather, but the beginning of practice has a mellow feel to it. The music is down, the crowd is quiet and the scene is pretty serene. Until Jerry Azzinaro cracks like thunder. "Don't waste time! Strike!"

Kelly was asked about Azzinaro's group prior to practice.

"We don't spend a whole heck of a lot of time when we're making defensive personnel meetings on the defensive line just because you have so many veterans in those positions, and they're young," he said. "That's the other thing. It's not like they're long in the tooth. Ced and Fletch are the older guys in the group. Bennie is just going into Year Three. That group as a whole is very consistent in terms of their production on a day‑in‑and‑day‑out basis, and it's just kind of something you can always count on, is that our D‑line right now, barring any type of injury, is in pretty good shape."
12:07 -- Here's a drill that we don't get to shoot up close very often. The Eagles have all sorts of-high tech, state-of-the-art gadgets that they use to enhance their training. This is not one of them. But it gets the job done. Instead of a regular-old tackling dummy they employ one with two faux arms, one of which is holding a painted-on football so they can practice the art of the strip sack.

12:24 -- 7-on-7s begin. Zach Ertz and DeMarco Murray were working off to the side with trainers for a portion of the individual drills but they're participating here, which is a pretty good sign that it's nothing serious. Mark Sanchez is a little high on his pass to Ertz along the left sideline, but rebounds with a nice ball to Miles Austin over the middle.
12:32 -- It's John Moffitt's turn at right guard today. The four-man rotation of Moffitt, Julian Vandervelde, Matt Tobin and Andrew Gardner rumbles on with no clear end in sight. In case you're wondering what the second-team offensive line looks like, it goes (from left to right): Gardner, David Molk, Vandervelde, Tobin and Dennis Kelly.

Speaking of Kelly, he was on the wrong end of a battle with Marcus Smith today.

Later during team drills, Smith blows up a run play, bursting into the backfield to corral Kenjon Barner before the back even had a chance to make a move. "Good job, Marcus!" a group of teammates yelled from the sideline. Pretty good day for the second-year linebacker.
12:54 -- Ertz and Mychal Kendricks accidentally collide during 7-on-7s and stay down for a moment. Ertz appears to have gotten the worst of it, but both shake it off and return to action. Sam Bradford is having another fine day. He connects with Nelson Agholor, then zips a back-shoulder throw to Brent Celek for the touchdown. Agholor is getting a lot of first-team reps today. It appears Josh Huff is not a full participant.
12:59 -- Tim Tebow with a nice ball to Eric Tomlinson down the seam. No. 11 celebrates with a fist pump. Bradford finds Murray for a short-gainer and then tries a back-shoulder throw to Jordan Matthews in the corner of the end zone. But Jaylen Watkins, playing first-team nickel, has good coverage and the pass is incomplete.
1:17 -- Bradford finishes strong. He finds Sproles in the flat, then connects with Jeff Maehl down the left side for a big gain. That's followed by the play of the day. Bradford lofts a perfect ball to Matthews in the right corner of the end zone about 30 yards downfield. Watkins is on him and again has tight coverage but Matthews rises up and wrestles the ball in for the score. A fired-up Matthews celebrates with an angry flex and a series of chest bumps as he makes his way up the sideline.
1:35 -- That's it for today. Another practice at the NovaCare tomorrow at 11:35.

Tuesday was the eighth day of 2015 Philadelphia Eagles training camp practice. The Birds returned to action after having a day off on Monday. There's a lot to talk about, so let's not waste any time.

    • The pads were on for today's session.
    • Quick injury update: Kiko Alonso (concussion) still hasn't been cleared to return to practice. Safety Jerome Couplin (appendicitis) is scheduled to return after the Colts game on Sunday. Everyone else was at practice. Zach Ertz and Mychal Kendricks collided at one point and Ertz got up slow but both players continued to practice.
    • Practice notes disclaimer: the Eagles practiced on the field farthest away from the bleachers today so it was hard to get a perfect read on the action. I assure you I did my best.
    • Special teams drills kicked off practice. Donnie Jones is usually money but he shanked a punt so bad today that it went over the fence around the team's practice facility. The ball was impacted by some wind, but it still wasn't pretty. A rare mistake by the savvy veteran. Or maybe he just really didn't like the tree he kicked it at.
    • The Eagles announced the signing of a new cornerback during practice: Marc Anthony. Not the singer. Anthony was out on the field wearing No. 22.
Malcolm Jenkins did a great job of breaking up a short Bradford pass over the middle to DeMarco Murray. Just a reminder that Jenkins is pretty good in coverage.

    • Some interesting lineup observations: Jaylen Watkins got the first team reps at nickel cornerback. Nelson Agholor saw action at first team wide receiver on the outside instead of Josh Huff. John Moffitt was at first team right guard for the second time in training camp.
DAILY SAM BRADFORD UPDATE: Yet another great day for the Eagles quarterback. Bradford threw an absolute bullet to Agholor along the sideline about 15 yards down the field. I've already talked about it a lot, but the guy's arm strength is legit. He puts such great zip on his passes.
Bradford connected with Brent Celek in the back of the end zone on a back shoulder throw. Defender didn't have a chance.
Bradford put great touch on a ball to Jordan Matthews in the end zone from about 25 yards out. Watkins was playing Matthews in tight coverage, but the wide receiver made a great play on the ball.

During practice, someone on Twitter (@MichaelCruseee) asked me how big of a difference it is watching Bradford versus Nick Foles. My answer: night and day. Foles just didn't flash the way Bradford does. Bradford is clearly the superior talent.
It’s getting to the point where I see Bradford make a difficult throw down the field and I’m fully expecting it to be a great play. And it usually is. Now he just needs to prove himself in game action.
    • DeMarco Murray runs ANGRY. The Eagles running back ran up the gut and completely bowled over Walter Thurmond head on. Violent. It was reminiscent of the way Murray once destroyed Damion Square.
    • Speaking of running backs, it was another day where Ryan Mathews looked pretty good as well. The Eagles' backfield is stacked.
Mark Sanchez overthrew Miles Austin on a deep attempt where the wide receiver was never open. Despite that play, Austin had a solid practice. It's been a quiet summer for him.
MARCUS SMITH! Holy crap! Marcus Smith actually did something. The second year outside linebacker destroyed Dennis Kelly in a one-on-one blocking drill. Smith knocked the 6-8, 320 pound Kelly on his butt. Completely embarrassed him. He celebrated the play and so did other linebackers and defensive linemen nearby. Brandon Graham was screaming and jumping around like a mad man. He loved it. The Eagles really need Smith to step up as the team's third outside linebacker. This minor moment seems like a step in the right direction.
Randall Evans broke up a deep Sanchez pass intended for Seyi Ajirotutu. The sixth round rookie has had a rough camp so this was a nice play for him.
Tim Tebow was up and down once again, as always, but there was more good than bad. He had a series where he threw a great pass to Josh Reece along the sideline before then proceeding to throw back-to-back passes way out of bounds. Then Tebow made up his mistakes by hitting UDFA tight end Eric Tomlinson in the end zone with a great strike for a touchdown. Tebow definitely looks more encouraging than Matt Barkley, in my opinion.
    • Speaking of Barkley, I think he committed intentional grounding at one point.
    • Misc plays: Riley Cooper made a good contested catch in traffic. Ertz made a few good catches. Vinny Curry exploded into the backfield to stop Kenjon Barner.
    • Sanchez had a good series to end practice. He moved the chains effectively and hit Ajirotutu over the middle for a touchdown pass. Sanchez is who he is: solid but unspectacular. As predicted all along, there isn't a real quarterback competition. Bradford is clearly ahead.
We're looking for people that are fundamentally different,” vice president of player personnel Andy Weidl said Saturday night. “The love and passion for football, it's non-negotiable. They're caring, their character, they do the right thing persistently, and they have a relentless playing style that you can see on tape. The motor, it burns hot. You see them finishing plays. Eagles practice notes, August 11, 2015: A Marcus Smith sighting!

Eagles NFL Philadelphia Eagles training camp

      By Jimmy Kempski
      PhillyVoice Staff

We are now eight training camp practices deep, and just five days away from the first preseason game. For the first time in 1.5 training camps, we had a Marcus Smith sighting! Here are my notes on the day:

      • Marcus Smith had the highlight of the day during one-on-one pass rush drills. He put Dennis Kelly on roller skates, and then on his back. Absolutely destroyed him. "It was a head fake bull (rush)," said Smith. "I came off the ball, and did kind of a stutter step to get him off his feet, and then I bull rushed him and got to the quarterback."
After standing out for the first time since, um, ever, Smith then went into a celebratory dance routine a la Freddy Mitchell. "I was just happy I finally conquered the move I've been wanting to do, so now I can bring other moves off of that," Smith said. The Eagles are light on OLB depth, and they need Smith to step up his game this season. Today was an encouraging sign.
      • One offensive lineman I thought looked pretty good in those one-on-one sessions was UDFA Brett Boyko. He went up against Brandon Graham a few times, and held his own. Boyko has one of the worst spider charts I've ever seen.

Looking at that spider chart, you'd picture a tall skinny dude with T-Rex arms, Burger King commercial hands, and cinder block feet. After watching him today, he looked far more athletic than his spider chart would suggest.
      • The other defensive players who stood out in the pass rush drills were actually the two nose tackles, Beau Allen and Bennie Logan.
      • Miles Austin had an active day on what has been a quiet camp. Austin isn't just going to make the team. He's going to play. The team gave him a million dollars guaranteed, and he hasn't played special teams in five years. He's going to be in the mix in some way as a receiver.
      • DeMarco Murray practiced today. He lowered his shoulder into Walter Thurmond's chest on a physical run. However, if you didn't factor in past success and pay, Ryan Mathews has had a far better camp, even when Murray has practiced.
      • RG update! Here's who has worked with the ones each day of camp so far:

      1. Aug 2: Matt Tobin
      2. Aug 3: Andrew Gardner
      3. Aug 4: Matt Tobin
      4. Aug 6: John Moffitt
      5. Aug 7: Andrew Gardner
      6. Aug 8: Julian Vandervelde
      7. Aug 9: Julian Vandervelde
      8. Aug 11: John Moffitt

That would be two days a piece for Tobin, Gardner, Vandervelde, and Moffitt. You know what they say -- The "ninth day of camp tiebreaker" is huge.
      • The Eagles were on the dreaded "far left" field today, which isn't ideal for evaluating quarterback play, so apologies for skipping notes on them.
      • Brandon Gowton of BleedingGreenNation.com is just making stuff up about Donnie Jones.

      • A number of fans have noted that Sam Bradford and Byron Maxwell have terrible sleeves on their uniforms. Yes, this is actually a thing. And I agree. Instead of having the super short sleeves that barely get over their shoulder pads, Bradford and Maxwell rock the extra long sleeves that flap in the wind. Here's what they look like:

After practice, because I'm not afraid to ask the hard-hitting questions, I asked Maxwell if he had any comments about the fan base's disdain for his sleeves. "I don't care if they like them or not," said Maxwell. "I like them." You do you, Byron.
