  • Jaws was part of Coach Search?

Now this is interesting. If true I may trust this hire a little more. Jaws has built a helluva football team in the Soul (be it arena) but is somebody who I do respect in the game. Very interesting

I wonder if Lurie doesn't feel like he went off his grid with Chip by not going with the people he trusts. I really think he trusts Andy and Jaworski and Duce and some of the Eagle faithful. It wouldn't surprise me at all that he spoke with those people about this search and that he wanted someone recommended from that group of people. Maybe not but I think he missed the 12 years or so prior to Chip
Wait until next year is a terrible philosophy
    Hope is not a strategy
    RIP

Ron Jaworski gives details about Eagles' coaching search

      January 16, 2016, 10:15 am

Ron Jaworski served as a "special adviser" to the Eagles in their head coaching search. (AP)

Former Eagles quarterback Ron Jaworski was part of the process in selecting Doug Pederson to be the team's head coach.
Jaworski spoke with Les Bowen of The Daily News on Friday. Here are some takeaways from the interview:
      • Jaworski was a "special adviser" to Jeffrey Lurie, Howie Roseman and Don Smolenski. He notes that Hall of Fame executive Bill Polian was also consulted. Jaworski and Polian are both analysts for ESPN.

Polian did not, however, sit in on any interviews. Jaworski sat in for interviews with Adam Gase and Ben McAdoo.
"We weren't hiring a line cook at a restaurant here - we were hiring a head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles," Jaworski said. "The interviews with Adam Gase and Ben McAdoo were eight, nine hours. They were intense . . . everybody was focused, everyone stayed the course."
Gase was hired by the Miami Dolphins and Ben McAdoo was hired by the New York Giants.
      • In all, Jaworski said they spent time on 20-25 candidates but narrowed it down to six interviews: Duce Staley, Pat Shurmur, Gase, McAdoo, former Giants coach Tom Coughlin and Pederson.
      • There seems to be a trend around the league with teams hiring offensive-minded coaches. Jaworski said there was not a conscious effort by the Eagles to hire an "offensive guy." They were just looking for the best candidate.
"The goal was - this came right from Jeffrey Lurie, when we first got together (on the Saturday after Chip Kelly's firing) - 'I don't care if it's an offensive guy, a defensive guy, a special-teams guy, I want the best coach for the Philadelphia Eagles' . . . I think we got the best guy for the Philadelphia Eagles in Doug Pederson."
      • Jaworski gave Pederson a glowing endorsement, dismissing his lack of experience as a coach. He also noted that he checked off an important box in Lurie's qualifications for his next coach.
"Doug has incredible character," Jaworski said. "I've known Doug back from his playing days . . . Certainly, he had a knowledge of Philadelphia."
"From a coaching perspective, he's done it all except be the head coach. But by the way, the Ben McAdoos, the Adam Gases, they weren't head coaches either."
      • There were those who believe Pederson was a "fallback" choice for the Eagles after missing out on guys like Gase, McAdoo and Coughlin. Jaworski refuted that.
"There never was a 'No. 1 choice,' " Jaworski said. "It was wide open. Jeffrey instructed us that way at the very first meeting."
"We were going to stick to the process. It's hard."
We're looking for people that are fundamentally different,” vice president of player personnel Andy Weidl said Saturday night. “The love and passion for football, it's non-negotiable. They're caring, their character, they do the right thing persistently, and they have a relentless playing style that you can see on tape. The motor, it burns hot. You see them finishing plays. They have a team-first mentality. They're selfless individuals.

Interesting. I like Jaws and all, but what makes him uniquely qualified to assess a coaching hire? I also wonder how him sitting in on interviews affected Gase? Awkward?

IMO Jaws is pretty well respected around the league, runs a franchise as well as having played the game. He knows far more football than Jeff and Howie. It just says he sat in on the interviews. I would imagine Jeff thinks a lot of his opinion to have him involved. Why not dip into a resource like Jaws ?

So who is Gase? Is it supposed to be some kind of big loss that he's not coaching here? Why is he supposed to be the cat's ass anyway?

Not exactly what I was getting at......but, apparently you all think it's normal to have an ESPN analyst sit in on 9 hour coaching interviews. New to me, but I may have missed something. Wut?

                  Lol! Only in philly!

Come on now, Jaws is more than an ESPN Analyst. He is a well respected former player in this league. A life long Eagle. Not only that he runs a VERY successful arena league franchise in this town. If he was in Howies position everybody be signing his praises. I would trust him more than Howie, Smolenski and Lurie combined.

Honestly I didn't know that Polian was involved also. Another long time football man. Makes me think this was a better process than the media has made it out to be. Shocker on that one. The media in this town all have their own agendas.

                    .

didn't mean anything by it Mike, I am in the PA area watching Comcast each and every day, Jaws is always in some way or another involved in the Eagles. Polian gets a lot of mention here too, I think they are 2 guys Jeff has a lot of respect for and someone he has talked to an many occasions.

Seems unprecedented to me that a guy not even in the employ of the franchise be sitting in on lengthy interviews like that, but whatever. As I say I like jaws, and I would certainly value his opinion over Howies.

Happen a lot more than you think. I believe the Bills did the same thing when they hired Rex.

No, what seems unprecedented is that a successful business man like Lurie turns a $2 billion franchise over to 150 lb ballerina to run the show for him.
