Eagles increase contract offer to Sam Bradford, per report

Are the Eagles closing in on a new deal with the quarterback?

The Philadelphia Eagles are trying to lock up Sam Bradford to a multi-year contract, according to a report from NFL insider Mike Garafolo. The Eagles have reportedly "upped their offer" to Bradford during contract negotiations with agent Tom Condon this week at the 2016 NFL Combine.

The terms of the offer aren't available, but sources indicated the Eagles' believe it's a very strong offer for Bradford -- one that's at the top of his expected range on the open market and one that should help get him under contract before that market opens on March 9.

Though former Eagles coach Chip Kelly is the one who brought Bradford to Philly, sources have repeatedly said Howie Roseman likes what he saw from Bradford last year, as do Doug Pederson and his offensive coaching staff.

The Eagles have publicly expressed interest in retaining Bradford, but the team reportedly isn't interested in using the franchise tag on him. This course of action would suggest the Eagles want Bradford back at a more reasonable price than the $19 million franchise tag figure.

I don't doubt that the Eagles have legitimate interest in bringing Bradford back. A report like this is curious, however. If the Eagles' offer was so "strong," wouldn't Bradford just take it? This report falls in line with the notion that the Eagles might want to make it seem like they did everything to keep Bradford, short of overpaying for him. At this point, if Bradford isn't back, it'll look like the Eagles tried but he didn't want to be back. Speaking of, it's been reported on multiple occasions that Bradford isn't crazy about returning to Philadelphia.

The Eagles have until 4:00 PM on Tuesday, March 1 to use the tag on Bradford. That's not expected to happen. The next deadline is March 7, when Bradford's agent can begin negotiating with other teams in the "legal tampering window" before NFL free agency officially begins on March 9. Can the Eagles get a deal done by then or will Bradford hit the market? Only time will tell.

What good comes from it getting in the media. The only thing that this says to me is that they are not signing him. They keep putting out things like this and then when he doesn't sign they can say WE TRIED.
Were from Philly F in Philly no one likes us we DON'T CARE!

I think they are trying if they offered him something at the top of the range he can get on the open market. But, if you are Bradford, and you were lukewarm on playing here, wouldn't you test the market and see if someone was willing to pay more? I kind of thought the Eagles would let him test the market, because he's not going to get the kind of offers he thinks, but it only takes one team to make a stupid offer.

I also wonder about the source of such information. It could also be Bradford's agent blowing smoke for potential suitors. "Hey the Eagles are offering something at the top of what's expected, so if you want him, you better be prepared to overpay a bit." Who knows.

Or, it could be the agent leaking the info, trying to get other teams to up their bids. Seems like it came more from an NFL source and not a team source, which could point that way.

I'm not sure why Bradford wouldn't wait until at least the legal tampering period to see what kind of offers he gets, but the Eagles could always threaten to pull their offer, leaving him with something worse I guess.

Damn straight. Two can play that game. I really like Sam, but he strikes me as just as greedy as all the other NFL QBs. The only one that I've ever seen give the home town discount is Brady. If the Birds brake the bank for Sam I'd be real surprised, and not happy about it either.

bingo, IMO he is getting no interest from anyone

I said this earlier today....teh Eagles, if this offer is tru.....should have set a time limiton it. Basicaly, this offer is on the table until free agency begins. After that, it's history. You don't let him take this offer and shop it around. That don't work.

All that said, I have been pretty clear that I am not crazy about extending Bradford with any sort of lengthy deal. Between his performnce and his health history, I can't see making a major investment there. But, if we sign him I will support him and the team, and just hope for the best

There's really not a lot of substance to this release. I probably shouldn't have posted it. My comments stand on Sam. He's going to the highest bidder-period. He just might get burnt like Mathis did (minus the SB too!).

I don't know why they bother, there are very few options for Bradford out there. Condon can wheel and deal all he wants but if the need for his play is limited, Eagles could probably drop their deal even lower.

I wonder if Pederson even thinks Bradford can carry a franchise.

Probably matters more what Howie thinks right now, but......that is the big question. We've heard the comments from the Eagle brass, but what do they really think of Bradford? And what do they think of the QB draft prospects? The fact that they are even still doing the dance with Bradford tells me that they are not wow-ed by the draftees.

or the one they want won't be there at 13 and will cost too much to move up or like you said, maybe they don't think any are worth the 13th pick

All three QBs are going to be gone in the top 10. Both Blue Chip tackles also and Mykes Jack. I think Ezekiel Elliott is going to go top 10 also. Jalen Ramsey is a sure thing to be gone also. I also think Braxton Miller is going to rise big time and could likely be gone as the first WR off the board. And do not be surprised if Hunter Henry moves up and goes ahead of 13.

The Birds are going to be staring at Conklin/Decker, Treadwell, roll the dice on Jaylon Smith, or trade back. I say if you are going to keep Peters then trade back and pick up a 2 and maybe a 3. Trade back to last few picks of the first round.

Draft Kelly out of Bama if you think he is a guard.
And then use the 2 you picked up to draft Doctson out of TCU although I think he is going to be gone very early in round 2.
You know Darren if you'd have told me 10 years ago that someday I was going to solve the world's energy problems I'd have said your crazy.... now lets drop this big ball of oil out the window.

I truly don't know what to believe with the media anymore. So I will just take the wait and see approach.
