Saints GM on Brees negotiations: 'We haven't made any progress'

Drew Brees almost certainly won't have a contract extension in place when the New Orleans Saints begin training camp on Thursday at The Greenbrier, Josh Katzenstein of the New Orleans Times-Picayune reports..

"We haven't made any progress," general manager Mickey Loomis said Wednesday evening when asked for an update on contract negotiations with the franchise quarterback.

Loomis and coach Sean Payton addressed the media Wednesday in advance of the start of camp Thursday morning.

Brees, who's entering the final year of his contract, told ESPN last week that he'd like to have a new deal in place by the start of the regular season, and when asked about that deadline Loomis said, "That's fine."

Both Loomis and Payton said they don't expect the lack of an extension to be a distraction for the 37-year-old quarterback during training camp.

"I don't see it being a distraction," Loomis said. "Look, lots of players play into their last year of their contract. It happened last time with us. It's not our preference, but look, it happens. We have nothing unusual here."
    "Hey Giants, who's your Daddy?"

We're looking for people that are fundamentally different,” vice president of player personnel Andy Weidl said Saturday night. “The love and passion for football, it's non-negotiable. They're caring, their character, they do the right thing persistently, and they have a relentless playing style that you can see on tape. The motor, it burns hot. You see them finishing plays. They have a team-first mentality. They're selfless individuals.

No. Wentz should be our starter for next year. Signing Brees just kicks the can further down the road.

No. You have Bradford and you have Wentz. This staff has to know after this year if Bradford is ever going to be a star and then has to give Wentz a look next year. Myself, I still believe that Bradford still has the ability to write his story. If he blows them away this year they will keep him next year IF they don't get a good offer or Wentz doesn't appear ready. If he just blows it is all Wentz next year.
Wait until next year is a terrible philosophy
            Hope is not a strategy
            RIP

I guess that I blew the title. I meant that if you were NO would you sign him?

Yes I think the Saints should sign him. A contract they can get out from under should Brees suddenly lose it. I don't follow NO that closely, I don't recall they have another QB they are hoping will replace Brees.

ya think there will be any pressure on the guy who replaces him ? All Wentz has to do is replace Sam.

Who would they get to sign the contract for them?

Or would they somehow do it holding the pen collectively like Army Ants?
