Eagles Links: What to do with Marcus Smith?

The photo caption on the front page says 'Bust A Move', but I think that since theyre discussing trading him it should say Move A Bust

Bleeding Green Nation’s Dave Mangels looked at some possible “bust for bust” trade scenarios that would send Smith out of Philly, but if the Louisville product doesn’t make the 53-man roster, he’ll likely be released.

You know TP, I saw that too. Really, what's the point? In fact it makes no sense to me. Whoever they trade for is junk. Even if the guy is somewhat good you could get him for the minimum and wouldn't get stuck with the contract. To me it's an easy question. Just cut him because he blows.

I think that any consideration for trading him would come down to his cap hit. That said, if he offers nothing to the team, move on and get someone else in that can help.

The inclination is to be angry with Smith because he is such a terrible waste of a #1 pick and because he has been just plain useless to the team. I know I get angry whenever I see his dufus face.

But he didn't draft himself. It's not like the guy hasn't worked hard. He just sucks. The people to be pissed at are the FO personnel (Howie?) that pushed this terrible reach.

Just get him out of here!

It isn't just Marcus Smith that pisses me off, it is Josh Huff, Nelson Agholor, and Eric Rowe that piss me off too.

            Fuck you fake Chip!

I guess that I could see Agholor, but taking all those fuckin Ducks for two years killed us.

Just be thankful that Dion Jordan wasn't on the board when we picked Johnson.

I don't think there are any actual rumors of a trade there; just speculation from beat writers. Impossible to tell what the coaches are thinking. Smith is a sunk cost -- if we release him, we still owe him his salary (though maybe offset a little if another team picks him up). Trading would be great, but another team would likely only trade a similarly-priced bust for him. Sometimes those work out. It probably comes down to if another young player outdoes him and earns the spot -- no reason to keep Smith if that happens. If it's a tie, we probably keep Smith.

It's not certain we'll be able to afford all the DEs we have right now for next year, so you are also looking at potential in future years. If Means is at his peak talent level and is marginally better than Smith, but Smith had a couple flashes which indicates he could be better than Means next year, maybe you keep Smith. Means is 1-2 years older.

I agree with you on Jordon thank goodness, but there is zero way Smith makes this team Fair One. Means has been kicking ass this camp while the most notable thing Smith has done is to make it into the training room.
