All Hail Howie !!!!! The Bears are paying his salary too
We're looking for people that are fundamentally different,” vice president of player personnel Andy Weidl said Saturday night. “The love and passion for football, it's non-negotiable. They're caring, their character, they do the right thing persistently, and they have a relentless playing style that you can see on tape. The motor, it burns hot. You see them finishing plays. They have a team-first mentality. They're selfless individuals.

He's under contract through 2024; can't imagine the Bears are paying future salary, just the rest of this year's (which is 6-7 million range, which would have made things tight for the Eagles).

Looks like his cap number for the Eagles would be 13.9 in 2023, and 12.9 in 2024. No guarantees, so it would depend on how well he's still playing. But that is definitely a hedge for DE on future years as well, which could also depend on who we land in the draft, etc.

Potential home-run move for this year, though he stats are way way way down, so there is the chance he's not as good anymore (after a fantastic 2021 though). But well worth that risk.

After this season I believe none of the remaining is guaranteed

That is correct, so we can cut him if it turns out he's fallen off a cliff. But if he hasn't, that is not a terrible cap number. We could also convert that into a signing bonus next year, which would guarantee it, but lower the 2023 cap hit. Lot of options, which explains the attraction from Howie's standpoint. Unlike Gerard Avery, this one has a much better chance of helping us this year, and (as it turns out) helping in future years too. I think we still draft a young DE, but this could also let us release Barnett. That contract is Howie-level hard-to-parse, but I think there is an option bonus we can avoid where we can save of about 7 million maybe, though most of that was scheduled for the 2024 cap so there wouldn't be much savings right away. But that would be 7 million less spent (eventually) on Barnett if we release him.

Howie has to be executive of the year. Win or lose, what he has done is amazing and all the pieces are there.

Marcus Spears was livid on ESPN as a Cowboys fan. He was absolutely raving about all of Howie's moves this year.

Two years ago we all thought we were in for a long rebuild. Howie has built an upper echelon roster without sacrificing the future. Unreal.

We got Quinn for a 4th and Avery for a 4th. I like this move just a tad More

As of right now its the last pick in the 4th round. Excellent move even if Quinn is nothing more than the 4th end here. New Defense no Mack across from him this year. I did see quite a bit of tape of him getting double teamed a lot. IF teams want to do that here fine but I will take my chances with the other players we have one on one.

This is a for this year move. I doubt they keep him at 14 mill next year. They could do a Howie special and redo his contract. if he plays well
Were from Philly F in Philly no one likes us we DON'T CARE!

I don't think 14 is too high to keep him, if he plays well. Top-end DEs are now making 20+ million. Quinn looks like he's 13th overall, and would be lower next year. Howie could move some of that into the 2024 cap easily if wanted.

The main issue is that Graham is going to be a free agent if he so chooses, and not sure they want Barnett back. If they are desperate for DEs, that would give Graham or other free agents a leg up in any negotiations. Howie would prefer to not be backed into any corners, so Quinn is now a fallback option if other things don't pan out. But if Graham renegotiates, and we draft a stud DE, then we have the option of letting him go too.

All of that is just a bonus over what he could give us this year, of course. Life without Khalil Mack on the other side has definitely been worse for him, and maybe he's freed up more here (and can play fewer snaps). He should be better than Barnett was, and far better than the nothing which has replaced Barnett.

No question this a great move. Bears pick up most money this year so the birds can fit him in. With Barnett gone he provides depth if nothing else although I think he will be an impact guy at some point. He can be cut with no impact or can be kept at a high but not unreasonable cost. And he gives some draft flexibility next year although I would put the chance of DE being first pick at 90%
                        great move.
Wait until next year is a terrible philosophy
                        Hope is not a strategy

If he plays well you rip up his agreement, sign him to a more cap friendly deal with some dummy years on the end and roll. Graham is probably close to the end. So is Fletcher and Hargrove’s money coukd go away too.
You know Darren if you'd have told me 10 years ago that someday I was going to solve the world's energy problems I'd have said your crazy.... now lets drop this big ball of oil out the window.

Quinn has been double teamed 58 times this year. This is a nice addition.

And you guys crack me up talking about the salary cap implications, and future considerations. Stop that shit right now. This trade is all about winning the Super Bowl this year. Period. Save all that future contract, salary cap FO shit til after the parade.

Totally agree EB… this is about this year. I think we were just giving the move some additional context.
