  • Jefferson Deal

I am glad we got our guys locked down. Justin Jefferson signed a 4 year 140 million contract with 110 million guaranteed.
We're looking for people that are fundamentally different,” vice president of player personnel Andy Weidl said Saturday night. “The love and passion for football, it's non-negotiable. They're caring, their character, they do the right thing persistently, and they have a relentless playing style that you can see on tape. The motor, it burns hot. You see them finishing plays. They have a team-first mentality. They're selfless individuals.

Lamb's stats are very similar to Jefferson's. If I was Lamb's agent I'd be hard-pressed to take one dime less. Texas doesn't not have a state income tax though so conceivably the Cowboys could play that card. Still, the Lamb contract is going to be very similar to Jefferson's and the Cowboys almost have to do it this year. Lamb is heading into the final year of his deal and if the Cowboys force him to play under that deal and risk injury without long-term security, if I was his agent and the player I'd be PISSED. Lamb deserves to be paid and if he doesn't get paid their will be some bitterness towards the team. Personally, I think Lamb is the best WR in the league and that is tough for me to admit.

The Cowboys also need to pay Micah Parsons potentially this year but also no later than next year. He will become the highest paid defensive player in the league and maybe the highest paid non QB in the league.

Between the two of them, the Cowboys are looking at at least $70 million a year.

Plus, they still have to pay Dak. Too bad... right.

A few more things about this agreement.

Jamar Chase is going to need to be paid also very soon. He is going to think he should get Jefferson and Lamb money and he doesn't deserve it for a variety of reasons. Chase is a knucklehead and he is going to be hard to deal with. Plus, the Bengals need to pay Tee Higgins.

I think the Bengals are going to be forced to trade Chase to a team with cap room BECAUSE of this deal. My guess is, the Panthers and Cardinals would both be interested in Chase. The Panthers desperately need a WR to keep Bryce Young from being a bust and they have cap room. The Cardinals don't have to pay MV3 for at least four years so they could fit an expansive Chase agreement into their cap and keep Kyler Murray happy.

I don't think Chase would command the Panthers top pick though. If I was the Panthers GM, I'd call the Bengals and say let's swap first round picks contingent on our pick being in the top 10 and the Panthers throw in their second round pick. The Panthers could say if our pick is not in the top 10, we will trade you our first-round pick for Chase and keep our second round pick. It would be difficult for the Panthers to trade their first round pick this summer for Chase knowing it could be a top pick again because they suck. That front office couldn't survive two years in a row of trading away the number one overall pick.

The Cardinals wouldn't need to make a deal like that. They could just trade even up their one for Chase.

Lastly... Brandon Aiyuk needs to be paid. I don't think he is going to want Justin Jefferson money but who knows. Would he command Jaylen Waddle or D smith money? Probably at least that. Maybe the 49ers don't want to pay that? I think the trade to the Cardinals is off the table for Aiyuk, but the Panthers and maybe the Broncos or Pats could trade a second and maybe a fourth rounder for Aiyuk. There were Deebo rumors last year. I think those were real. The 49ers are going to have to pay Brock Purdy this year if he has another great year. That is going to be a hard pill to swallow because right now they are paying him less than a million dollars a year and his salary would almost certainly jump to at least Daniel Jones type of money around $45 million per season.

Long story short... Howie and the Eagles get out ahead of all these teams and because of that they remain OK salary cap wise.

That all said... here comes the Jordan Davis deal next year maybe, Milton Williams, Jalen Carter, Cam Jurgens, and if they like what White does at LB maybe they finally spend money on that position.

You know Darren if you'd have told me 10 years ago that someday I was going to solve the world's energy problems I'd have said your crazy.... now lets drop this big ball of oil out the window.

It sounds like Devanta's contract was a steel.

It was, if he stays healthy and productive. That was part of it -- Smith had one year to go on his rookie deal, then another year of 5th year extension, before he'd really cash in. And he's not the top guy from his own draft class, and below several others, so he wasn't going to get top dollar. Since the extension was 25 AAV, he gets listed there now (among the top WRs) but technically that extension does not start until 2026, when WR salaries overall will be higher. On the other hand, he gets a bunch of money up front and puts a lot of injury risk on the Eagles instead.

AJ Brown went and did the same thing. He got 30 AAV, but that does not "truly" kick in until 2027 when salaries will be still higher. But he gets some of that up front, and more guaranteed, and all the rest of his current contract guaranteed, including the 30 million final year in 2026. Means he also gets to ignore trade speculation for some years.

It's still a lot of dough at WR, even if salaries are higher. It's not like every team has a 25-30 million WR and we have two. Hardly a slap in the face, but may have given the team some room to keep those guys together for a long while and stay competitive.

Howie did well getting ahead of the wave on WR signings. I’d also say AJ and Devante did well getting their big, even if it isn’t huge, payday.
I would also say WRs tend to be a bit nutty. Let’s see in 2-3 years if our two, along with all the other high end WRs, are still happy with their contracts.

Played golf with a huge Bengals fan yesterday that tried to convince me Chase is the best WR in the league. I actually had to stop the conversation because it sounded so crazy. I like the guy too and he is a huge football guy but I told him here are the tiers to me:

Tier 1 - Lamb, Jefferson, Hill
Tier 2 - Chase, Brown, Adams, St. Brown
Tier 3 - Deebo, Aiyuk, Waddle, D Smith, Kupp

That whole group are considered genuine number one receivers.I wouldn't necessarily rate one over the other.

I don't think for one minute the Bengals are going to trade Chase. They used a first round pick on the guy, and he's Burrow's guy, and the focal point of their offense. They need to pay him. Even if they lose Tee Higgins.

Oh, and I also love the fact that the Eagles have Brown and Smith locked up long term, while the 49ers are trying to figure out what to do with Samuel and Aiyuk. I've heard rumors of both of them being on the block at one time or another. Hopefully, they'll both end up disgruntled like Lamb is in Dallas.
