UPDATE: The Eagles cut Marlon Tuipulotu to make room for claiming Byron Young, as expected. It’s possible we could see Tui return on the practice squad.
ORIGINAL STORY BELOW.
The Philadelphia Eagles claimed former Las Vegas Raiders defensive tackle Byron Young off waivers, according to NFL insider Tom Pelissero.
Young, who turns 24 in November, played college football at Alabama and was originally selected by the Raiders with a third-round pick (No. 70 overall!) in the 2023 NFL Draft. He played 99 snaps over six games as a rookie, logging four solo tackles and zero other stats.
That the Raiders were willing to move on from a third-round pick after just one season clearly raises some questions. Of course, Las Vegas underwent a regime change so it’s not like Young had loyalty working in his favor. He also reportedly struggled in the preseason this summer.
Young was at least deemed good enough to make the Raiders’ initial roster before they cut him to make room for some waiver claims of their own.
The Eagles clearly believe Young has some untapped potential. But it’s not like he’s currently projected to see much playing time with Philly already having six defensive tackles on their roster.
Of course, it’s quite possible they cut one of those DTs (perhaps Marlon Tuipulotu?) to make room for Young.
