  • Trade deadline discussion

It that time of the year with the Trade Deadline coming on November 5th. Howie seems to love to make moves at the deadline. Though most have not panned out. In fact I think Ajayi is probably the only one who really helped. Byard last year filled a whole and was Ok on the field a distraction off the field. Busts like Robert Quinn, Gernald Avery, Golden Tate. So its really a crap shoot and as Fangio said yesterday its tough this time of the year to add in guys. That said I do believe there are certain positions that can step right in an play. RB, DE, DT are three. Especially if you dumb down how you use the player in that position. Positions like WR, CB, QB etc are harder.

So what will Howie do. My guess is 50-50 he makes a move and the move might not be adding a player for this year. It could be a trade off of a player. A couple of guys who could play for other teams and probably start but are buried here due to the talent in front of them are Eli Ricks and Kellee Ringo. Avonte Maddox might have some value to a contender. How about a shocker like Josh Sweat? Also depending on how much they like Wil Shipley, Gainwell could be a guy they could move. Now I don't see anything significant for any of them. 3rd day picks. In the case of Ringo probably a 4th. In the others most likely deal a 7th with the player to get a 5th type move.

Now if they do decide to add a player, I am thinking Defensive line/LB hybrid area. Now we have Smith, Huff, Hunt there already but I could see someone else brought in, especially if they are good against the run. A couple of name I think they could look at

    1. Baron Browning DE/LB Broncos - Fangio was head coach when he was drafted in 21 as a 3rd round pick. He could offer help as a edge player or hybrid similar to Zach Baun. In fact he could be Bauns understudy while Trotter continues to be Deans understudy. FA at the end of the year, probably won't cost much of anything.

    2. Azeez Ojulari Edge Giants - Ok interdivision trade probably not, although we did do a several deals with Washington in the last few years. Ojulari is a FA at the end of the year and with Thibodeaux and Burns already there I doubt the Giants sign him. He is only 24 and could be a guy who the Eagles will target anyway next year as Sweat and BG are both FA or retiring. He can rush the passer for sure. Also, he played with Dean, Davis etc at Georgia. This one is probably going to cost at least a 4th rounder and since we don't have one in 2025, it most likely will be a 2026 4th plus like a 7th this year.

    3. Chig Okonkwo TE, Titans - Under contract for another year after this one, had 54 catches last year but has lost playing time to Josh Whyle. Could be a guy where they could swap a young player like Ringo or Ricks for. We need another TE badly on this team. Goedert can not stay healthy and is getting hurt way too much.

    4. ZaDarius Smith DE Cleveland - At age 33 he is not going to fetch much but he is still playing at a high level. 5 sacks so far this year. After getting burned by Robert Quinn a few years back I think that Howie would be cautious at this point

    5. Travis Etienne RB Jags - Strictly as a depth piece, bigger back been banged up this year. Jags are stuck in neutral and he is a FA after this year so I could see them moving on from him. Another one where they could deal and Eli Ricks for him. Young player under control for a few years for Etienne. Backs normally don't bring much draft pick compensation wise.

    6. Jordan Akins TE Cleveland - Playing behind Njoku in Cleveland. Older player but having a pretty nice year. Would not cost much.

    7. Emmanuel Ogbah Edge Miami - Bigger edge, played in Fangio system last year. Shouldn't cost much either.

I am sure there could be others. I don't think this is going to be a give up big draft compensation stuff. They already dealt for Dotson who is not being used much in the offense. They have up a 3rd and a 7th and got back Dotson and a 5th. They have Dotson for multiple years. Back to the Fangio talk of its hard to get guys into the system when they are added late. Dotson is a prime example.

Would be interested in thoughts on names you think they could add. I don't think guys like Crosby, Garrett etc are not going to be dealt at least not in season. Both have longer term contracts.
Were from Philly F in Philly no one likes us we DON'T CARE!

Not a name guy but I will say there are two needs IMM. I posted earlier in the year that DE and TE were the two big needs in the next draft and still say that is what the team needs. Would love to see a trade for big name producer like Crosby or Garrett but don’t see those things happening.
I can easily see Goedert go the way of Maddox. Very good player who gets hurt too much. He may hang around like Maddox but there will be a replacement for him and he will get demoted or traded away like Ertz. Ironically Goedert and Maddox were roommates for a long time when they came into the league.
Right now I think Stoutland and the TE coach are working hard with Calcaterra because his blocking is getting better even though it is not good yet.
Wait until next year is a terrible philosophy
    Hope is not a strategy
    RIP

It will likely be some guy we never heard of because Howie can't sit still.

Haha. Your probably right about that. This is the first year where I am thinking we do not have desperate need at any position. How nice is that. You can never have enough good DE's. So, if anything that might be a place to add. I don't think they add a TE. I think they like who they have when Goedert gets back. Calcaterra seems to be getting better at blocking.

But Howie is Howie. He will have to do something

I could see another TE, why we keep the guy from Denver around is beyond me. A few years of zero from him. Goedert is undependable. One injury after another
We're looking for people that are fundamentally different,” vice president of player personnel Andy Weidl said Saturday night. “The love and passion for football, it's non-negotiable. They're caring, their character, they do the right thing persistently, and they have a relentless playing style that you can see on tape. The motor, it burns hot. You see them finishing plays. Unless his name is Kyler Warren I'm not really intrested.

Agree on DE and TE being the biggest needs. Zadarius Smith fits, but age is concern.

Browning and Ojulari are tweeners that wouldn’t fit our scheme.

my guess is we make no moves this year.

especially after parting with a 3rd for Dotson before season started.

I think he makes some kind of move just to say he tried

I don't think age necessarily means that much for one year if he's still Producing. N Shue helped win us a Super Bowl but of course he was special.

I think Howie stays out of this one for some reason. I think with two new coordinators I think he allows this team to get. I can see guys leaving though. Bradberry or a another under used guy. If he does trade I am thinking it would be DT or take a flyer on a TE
