It that time of the year with the Trade Deadline coming on November 5th. Howie seems to love to make moves at the deadline. Though most have not panned out. In fact I think Ajayi is probably the only one who really helped. Byard last year filled a whole and was Ok on the field a distraction off the field. Busts like Robert Quinn, Gernald Avery, Golden Tate. So its really a crap shoot and as Fangio said yesterday its tough this time of the year to add in guys. That said I do believe there are certain positions that can step right in an play. RB, DE, DT are three. Especially if you dumb down how you use the player in that position. Positions like WR, CB, QB etc are harder.
So what will Howie do. My guess is 50-50 he makes a move and the move might not be adding a player for this year. It could be a trade off of a player. A couple of guys who could play for other teams and probably start but are buried here due to the talent in front of them are Eli Ricks and Kellee Ringo. Avonte Maddox might have some value to a contender. How about a shocker like Josh Sweat? Also depending on how much they like Wil Shipley, Gainwell could be a guy they could move. Now I don't see anything significant for any of them. 3rd day picks. In the case of Ringo probably a 4th. In the others most likely deal a 7th with the player to get a 5th type move.
Now if they do decide to add a player, I am thinking Defensive line/LB hybrid area. Now we have Smith, Huff, Hunt there already but I could see someone else brought in, especially if they are good against the run. A couple of name I think they could look at
1. Baron Browning DE/LB Broncos - Fangio was head coach when he was drafted in 21 as a 3rd round pick. He could offer help as a edge player or hybrid similar to Zach Baun. In fact he could be Bauns understudy while Trotter continues to be Deans understudy. FA at the end of the year, probably won't cost much of anything.
2. Azeez Ojulari Edge Giants - Ok interdivision trade probably not, although we did do a several deals with Washington in the last few years. Ojulari is a FA at the end of the year and with Thibodeaux and Burns already there I doubt the Giants sign him. He is only 24 and could be a guy who the Eagles will target anyway next year as Sweat and BG are both FA or retiring. He can rush the passer for sure. Also, he played with Dean, Davis etc at Georgia. This one is probably going to cost at least a 4th rounder and since we don't have one in 2025, it most likely will be a 2026 4th plus like a 7th this year.
3. Chig Okonkwo TE, Titans - Under contract for another year after this one, had 54 catches last year but has lost playing time to Josh Whyle. Could be a guy where they could swap a young player like Ringo or Ricks for. We need another TE badly on this team. Goedert can not stay healthy and is getting hurt way too much.
4. ZaDarius Smith DE Cleveland - At age 33 he is not going to fetch much but he is still playing at a high level. 5 sacks so far this year. After getting burned by Robert Quinn a few years back I think that Howie would be cautious at this point
5. Travis Etienne RB Jags - Strictly as a depth piece, bigger back been banged up this year. Jags are stuck in neutral and he is a FA after this year so I could see them moving on from him. Another one where they could deal and Eli Ricks for him. Young player under control for a few years for Etienne. Backs normally don't bring much draft pick compensation wise.
6. Jordan Akins TE Cleveland - Playing behind Njoku in Cleveland. Older player but having a pretty nice year. Would not cost much.
7. Emmanuel Ogbah Edge Miami - Bigger edge, played in Fangio system last year. Shouldn't cost much either.
I am sure there could be others. I don't think this is going to be a give up big draft compensation stuff. They already dealt for Dotson who is not being used much in the offense. They have up a 3rd and a 7th and got back Dotson and a 5th. They have Dotson for multiple years. Back to the Fangio talk of its hard to get guys into the system when they are added late. Dotson is a prime example.
Would be interested in thoughts on names you think they could add. I don't think guys like Crosby, Garrett etc are not going to be dealt at least not in season. Both have longer term contracts.
