    May 30, 2007

Don't kid yourself Jimmy. If a cow ever got the chance, he'd kill you and everyone you cared about!

Barksdale is intriguing, to say the least. We have a lot of pet projects going on right now, and I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing. Hopefuly some of them pan out. But we have players playing position they are not familiar with or didn't do much in colege (GOcong, Gaddis) and others that just don't have a lot of football experience, or are not simply football dedicated athletes. like Bloom and this kid. And should I mention the Aussie kicker? Just how many long shots should you take?

Although great - I don't have high aspirations for Barksdale. I think he's too green (and not in a Birds sort of way). If he gives us anything - I'll consider it gravy.

I don't worry about that in the least. If they have enough talent to catch the eye of Heckert and his staff that's good enough for me. They have a successful track record of identifying talent well known and unknown. Besides these guys got placed in a sport and/or a position based on the talent, size and ability they showed at much earlier times eg freshman year in College or even HS. What says that they have not developed the physical and mental ability to do an even better job at something else.

Dutch, I'm not saying that CAN'T succeed. It's simply that we are doing a lot of tweaking with experiments right now. Throw in the musical chairs we seem to want to play with linemen and LBs, and we end up with a lot of questions to be answered. Some answers we will like, and others we may end up saying, "why didn't we just go out and draft an actual ***** in the first place!".

To clarify, let's look at a guy like Bloom. Now, just because a guy is fast and had some experience doing it years ago, doesn't mean this guy is going to ba a successful returner a t this level. You talk about athletic abilites, but that is not the whole story. Brian Mitchell was a fantastic returner. Not because he had blazing speed, but just because he was a flat out football player. Tough, reliable and had the heart and mind for the game. To a lesser extent, how about the un-gifted Mahe Mahe, who was very successful as a returner....with what skills? He has a head for the game and reliable hands.

Bloom may turn out to be that way too, who knows.
Rocca may make us scratch our heads and say, this guy don't fit.
Gocong may make us say...there's a reason this guy was not playing LB in college.
Gaddis may be a safety that can't hit, or a corner who's not good enough in coverage at this level.

Tweeners, or never was's.....but could be's.

                  Etc....

With Bloom, Barksdale, and Rocca, we aren't relying on them to turn into good players. If they do, great. If not, we have enough other players at their positions. It's basically low-risk high reward.

Gaddis and Gocong are different stories. We take a big hit if either aren't very good. The depth at safety especially concerns me.

I sometimes wonder what exactly goes into these low-round contract negotiations - I mean these guys basically make a few thousand bucks more than the rookie minimum, there can't be that much to haggle over.

From today's signing statement on PE.com:

"To celebrate his newfound riches, Barksdale is not going to fritter away his money on trivial items. Instead, he's going to pay off his student loans. That's something you rarely hear of."

Let's hope this rook's football develoment matches his maturity i wonder how many of us, if put in the same position in our early twenties, would have thought first about paying off our college loans. i doubt very much that I would have.
